Johnnie Taylor: Who's Making Love To Your Old Lady
Johnnie Taylor: Running Out Of Lies
UPDATE
Okay DUH! I know why he was on soul train, He had a hit with the song Disco Lady. I must admit I sort of tried to erase that whole mid 70s disco era from my mind:-) Taylor wasn't the only soul, or bluesman who moved to disco, but Taylor's best stuff is his soul and blues.

The Soul Of John Black
This just in from Mile High Productions.
THE SOUL OF JOHN BLACK
"BLACK JOHN"
“Retro soul tinged in country, funk and blues.” – Rolling Stone Magazine
"To say that Bigham is heir to multiple traditions is a major understatement...He seamlessly merges influences and eras, and the results can be heard on his fine new album Black John...The groove is, indeed, the thing. It's relentless...what matters is the soul and funk, and Bigham brings it on every track. He's a fine singer, too, throwing in Godfather of Soul grunts and gospel melismas and pleading, sexually-charged asides that are worthy of Al Green."
– Paste Magazine Online
“Best New Artist Debut”
(2008 Blues Music Awards Nominee)
The Soul of John Black is John “JB” Bigham, an adventurous artist who isn’t afraid to take risks while pursuing his musical vision. His stage moniker is a name shrouded with an element of darkness and mystery, inspired by the 1976 cult film “J.D.’s Revenge.” JB declares, “I tend to like artists who lean toward the shadows and walk the edge and wanted my music to reflect that.” He draws his inspiration from blues and soul pioneers of the past and stands as a true testament to the dynamic beauty and freedom of musical expression, which he strips down to the core – guitar, voice and exposed human emotion conveyed in sparse, soulfully captivating performances wrought with raw, spontaneous power.
JB’s musical history boasts an impressive resume. He’s written songs for Miles Davis and played percussion in the Davis group. His track “Jilli” is featured on the trumpeter’s last studio album “Amandla,” and he appeared on the Davis DVD, “Live in Paris,” recorded at the 10th Paris Jazz Festival. Bigham also played guitar and keyboard for the pioneering rock-funk-ska band Fishbone for eight years, contributing songs, guitars, keyboards, background vocals and production expertise to several of their albums, and later toured as a side man and played on sessions with artists as varied as Eminem, Dr. DrĂ©, Rosey, Joi, Nikka Costa, Bruce Hornsby and Everlast.
The Soul of John Black is a celebration of the African American musical heritage. On “Black John,” JB masterfully combines soul, gospel, funk and hip-hop, while tracing its roots all the way back to its humble origins - the blues. JB infuses his uniquely crafted music with contemporary urban rhythms and hauntingly earthy acoustic slide guitar which at once pays tribute to a bygone era of such legendary figures as Leadbelly, John Lee Hooker and Muddy Waters, while boldly crossing over into new innovative territories and sonic frontiers. Backed by notable musicians Adam McDougal on keys (Black Crowes, Macy Gray, Maroon 5, Nikka Costa), Oliver Charles on drums (Ben Harper, Rhythm Roots All-Stars), Scott Seiver on drums (Nikka Costa, Inara George), Jake Najor on drums (Carl Denson, Connie Price, Breakestra), Shawn Davis on bass (Beck, Nikka Costa), Davey Chegwidden on percussion (Rhythm Roots All-Stars, Bitter Sweet, Ghost Face Killer, Big Daddy Kane), and Bill Botrell on 2nd guitar (Grammy winning producer for Sheryl Crow, Shelby Lynne, and many others), The Soul of John Black has reached a new plateau; transcending the crossroads and arriving upon an unexplored intersection on the aural highway. It’s soul music for a whole new generation.

“I love the sexy, sultry sound of John Black. He is a hidden treasure of Los Angeles.” - Ariana Morgenstern, KCRW - Los Angeles, CA (Producer of Morning Becomes Eclectic / Curator of Today's Top Tune)
“Was pleased to see the new Soul of John Black land on my desk. The day it got here, I slapped it on the air for a test. Betty Jean sounds great, and I am looking forward to finding other great gems on this disc.” - Diane Michaels, KPND - Spokane, WA (PD/MD)
Early reaction to The Soul of John Black has been overwhelmingly positive! Southern California’s leading NPR affiliate KCRW added the new single three weeks early! Taken from the forthcoming album "Black John," the first single "Betty Jean" pays tribute to Betty Davis, the funk-rock singer and former wife of Miles Davis. The song was added to KCRW’s rotation on January 1st and featured on their website on "Today’s Top Tunes." CLICK TO VIEW MORE! JB also recently graced the airwaves here in Southern California on KPCC 89.3 FM where he performed songs from his brand new release "Black John" on Off-Ramp, a weekly show hosted by radio veteran John Rabe. The podcast is currently available in the archive section on the station’s website. CLICK TO LISTEN. JB also blessed the airwaves of another Southern California station, KPFK, where he performed an acoustic set of songs from "Black John" and was interviewed on the show Global Village.

Dewey Cantrell Jodi Bodley, and KFMG
Hey all, my partner in crime and the blues, Jodi Bodley and I are going to be featured on a special edition of KFMG’s Tuesday night blues show (99.1 FM and kfmg991.com streaming internet radio). The show runs from 7-10pm and in addition to the excellent blues Scott (Big Dawg) Allen and Don (T-bone) Erickson always play, the show will be featuring some great live music with 2-time Iowa Blues Challenge winner Matt Woods in the first hour, The Fat Tuesday guys in the second hour (also Iowa Blues Challenge winners), and Jodi and I in the last hour. So somewhere around or shortly after 9:00 we will be talking with the host and performing a song or two live.
It’s all part of KFMG’s first ever fundraising event during February 16th through February 22nd to help operate this great radio station. KFMG is a World Class progressive music station that covers everything from blues to jazz to Steely Dan to singer-songwriters like John Hiatt, and a plethora of great adult alternative music. They may be a “low power” local station, but they play great stuff on 99.1 FM all the time so tune in if you can. Like I mentioned above, they’re also streaming live to the web so check out www.kfmg991.com if you’re outside Des Moines, and you can also find out more about the event and the station in general there, too
It should be fun to talk and perform some blues totally live and unrehearsed (well, the interview part anyway).

TERRANCE SIMIEN & THE ZYDECO EXPERIENCE
The Pearson Lakes Art Center is proud to present the 2008 Grammy Award winner for BEST ZYDECO, Terrance Simien to the Lauridsen Performing Arts Theatre stage on Wednesday, March 11, 2009. The evening will begin at 6:00pm with a Mardi gras dinner provided by Remington’s Restaurant in the Pomerantz Hall. At 7pm we will host a Curtain Talk; a pre-show discussion about the history of the group and the show will begin at 7:30 in the Lauridsen Performing Arts Theatre.
Terrance Simien, born Sept. 3, 1965 grew up at the crossroads of State Highway 190 and Rural Route 103 in Mallet, Louisiana in St. Landry Parish, the heart of French speaking Creole country. He hails from one of the earliest families documented to have settled that rural area of SW Louisiana. At the crossroads where he grew up sits the building that anchors the small parish community, St. Ann's Roman Catholic Church. Inside that church Terrance learned to love the spiritual side of making music. Today he still lends that soulful voice and his deep spirituality to St. Ann's for a funeral of a family member or friend from that same prairie village.
It all began for the young Simien in the early 1980’s during a time when the indigenous music of the Creoles was really just considered the music of the ”old folks”, with only 2 young emerging bands performing the music of their zydeco forefathers.
The music was in great jeopardy of dying out at this pivotal point in its history. It was simply Terrance Simien and the Sam Brothers. Buckwheat had already been touring and recording. While Simien’s friends were all listening to the popular music of that time, (he was as well) but he was also busy searching out his musical roots in Zydeco music: a bold choice for any teenager.
He left home to tour the world. In the process he has become one of the most internationally recognized artists in the genre. Now a “Living Legend:” his conscious choice as a young artist to preserve his indigenous music makes him an important cultural asset and ambassador for the state of Louisiana. Simien has gone on to share studio stage with Paul Simon, Stevie Wonder, Robert Palmer, Los Lobos and Dave Matthews Band to name a few.
He has conquered film and records with the same intensity he brings to the stage. He dots the soundtrack and appears in the film "The Big Easy". Paul Simon discovered the young Simien when he came to Louisiana to research music for his “Graceland” CD. They recorded a Chenier standard with Simon harmonizing on "You Used to Call Me". It was released on a 45 in 1987 and re-released on Simien’s "Across The Parish Line” CD.
He continues to expand his creative vision and increase the awareness of his native Creole culture with a collection of mostly original songs for family listening, “Creole for Kidz and the History of Zydeco.” The CD (w/5 pg. study guide is now housed in about 200 libraries around the country. Since its debut in 2001 this arts-in-education “informance” (informational performance), has reached over 200,000 K-12 students and teachers at schools and art centers in 20 states, Canada, Australia, Paraguay and Mali, West Africa. Audiences are treated to a dynamic multicultural music experience where Simien offers a bit of history recalling the early days of Zydeco music and its pioneers. The students are navigated by with stories taking the, into the rural community where the Creoles settled 300 years ago as some of the first families of Louisiana. They learn the origins of the word zydeco, the meaning of Mardi gras and that Gumbo is Creole from the African word for okra. The audiences gain appreciation for the simplicity of life and the colorful celebrations of the Creoles who are said to be one of the most complex rural sub-cultures in North America.
In the spring of 2001 Simien was invited to tour with the Dave Matthews Band on multiple arena/shed dates. Dave introduced the band each night urging his audience to “take notice” of his friends from Louisiana and then later joined Terrance for a duet. This was yet another nod to Simien’s level of artistry.
His latest release (06) “Across The Parish Line” once again gained accolades from music critics. Billboard, No Depression, Amazon and Blues Review all giving it high marks for outstanding vocals and diversity. Amazon declared that “This CD cements Simien's standing as the most creative, diverse musician in modern Zydeco.” Offbeat Magazine calls it a “crowning achievement.” and voted it one of the 50 Best CD’s in 2006 and The Edmonton Sun says “Simien’s biggest asset is his phenomenal set of pipes.”
He furthers his mission with the formation of his non-profit MusicMatters, artist advocacy and education organization for the advancement of music artists in his community. His work emphasizes the responsibility of all to address and invest in infrastructure building, professional development and advocate for artists rights for increased economic benefits to Louisiana’s indigenous music artists who are valuable cultural assets.
Join the PLAC and Terrance Simien on March 11th for a thrilling evening of Creole and New Orleans music. Call 712-332-7029 or go to www.lakesart.org for tickets and information. Tickets are $18- for members, $22- for non-members, $11 – for students. Dinner is $14.95 and reservations are required prior to the event.

Eric Sardinas At The Winter Blues Blowout!!
Press release from Iowa Public Radio
For immediate release: February 16, 2009
Contact: Joan Kjaer, 319-335-5746Eric Sardinas & Big Motor to headline 2009 Winter Blues Blowout for Iowa Public Radio
2/16/09 (Cedar Falls) - Eric Sardinas brings his signature brand of delta dynamite to the Electric Park Ballroom in Waterloo on February 21 for the 2009 Winter Blues Blowout, presented by the Friends of KUNI/KHKE on behalf of Iowa Public Radio.
Picking up the guitar at the age of six, Eric Sardinas reaped a heapin' helpin' of inspiration from a melting pot of influences numbering R&B, gospel, rock and roll and most tellingly, his profound love of traditional blues forms. All inform the songwriting and incendiary playing on the new album, "Eric Sardinas and Big Motor." And while those influences inexorably shape his playing he's no mere mimic. Instead, he's absorbed all those styles into his DNA, reinterpreting them into his own driving contemporary blues/rock sound.
On his latest album, the artist delivers a powerful musical statement that stands as his most accomplished release to date, fueled by a wily sense of adventure, imagination and ferocious lead guitar finery. Honest, soulful and fire-branded with a gritty passion, Eric Sardinas is the real deal, infusing his music with an embattled spirit, reconfiguring deep southern blues with the finesse of a master. Scoring accolades for his previous studio albums (1999's "Treat Me Right," 2001's "Devil's Train" and 2003's "Black Pearls"), Sardinas has garnered acclaim for his explosive live performances, which clearly demonstrate his consummate six-string agility. A veteran of the live circuit, he’s racked up thousands of performances worldwide.
Opening the show is Iowa City area's Kevin "BF" Burt & the Instigators. Showtime is 8 p.m. (doors open at 7 p.m.).
Tickets are $20 in advance ($25 at the door). Advance tickets can be ordered online at www.iowapublicradio.org or by calling 800-772-2440, ext. 0. Advance tickets are also available at the KUNI Studios and Bob's Guitars in Cedar Falls. All proceeds benefit Iowa Public Radio.
Financial support is made possible by Lincoln Savings Bank (Waterloo), Lucky 13 Design (Des Moines), Blue Monday Monthly (Owatonna, MN), Blackhawk Hotel (Cedar Falls) and the Friends of KUNI/KHKE.
Iowa Public Radio informs, enriches and engages Iowans through radio programming and other media. Iowa Public Radio includes the WOI Radio Group (Iowa State University, Ames), KUNI-KHKE (University of Northern Iowa, Cedar Falls), and KSUI-WSUI (University of Iowa, Iowa City).

Bob Dorr And The Blue Band Update
The latest from Iowa's best blues band
I'm not sure I can even write a Blue Note in the middle of the day, but I wanted to wish you love and happiness for Valentine's Day and I literally fell asleep sitting at the keyboard this morning at 3am (waiting for the backdoor lady) so let's try this again!...Tomorrow night (Saturday-LUV day) we're helping the Jefferson County Hospital in Fairfield raise funds for their new mammogram program (why do I LOVE the idea of us being involved with this??) (there's probably TWO reasons, but that's not important now) The event starts at 7pm, Blue Band plays 8:30 til a little after 11:00. Ticket info available at: http://www.jchospital.org/getpage.php?name=foundation_events This event was a lot of fun last year. The people of Fairfield are very hip, aware, and worldly and have an affinity for fun. I understand that the snow that is predicted for tonight will be done a little after midnight and the temperature tomorrow is predicted to be in the 30s so the roads should be fine, plus Hwy 34 is now a four-lane all the way to Fairfiled (from Des Moines , Cedar Rapids, the Quad Cities-all roads lead to Fairfield) so driving should be no challenge. It's a good cause and a splendid time is guaranteed for all! Special thanks and LUV to Denise Gallagher for helping us get the gig and all the promotional work she's done to help generate a crowd for this event...
We don't have a gig for the rest of February (unless you'd like us to play in your basement/garage to help celebrate that hefty tax return you're getting) (go ahead, stimulate the economy by paying seven musicians to do their thing so they can pay their mortgages and put gas in the car/equipment truck)) So our next scheduled appearance is the monthly First Friday celebration at The Hub in Sparkle City, March 6, AND, we've just added THE FIRST OUTDOOR GIG OF THE YEAR!! (in a heated tent) at The Twisted Parrot's 7th annual St. Patrick's Weekend, 6500 Hickman Rd., Windsor Heights (suburban Des Moines) Saturday March 14, 7-11 p.m. We were part of this multi-day celebration last year and jumped at the chance to do it again! It was almost too hot in the tent last year, so get some Irish going for that weekend (remember green is nothing more than a little yellow and whole lot of BLUE!)...
You may have noticed that Iowa Public Radio's Studio One Network is off the air. We had a transmission line burnout (see, I'm not the only burnout associated with that network) on Monday and the weather has not cooperated with trying to climb the 1000 feet up the tower to fix it. A tower crew is on the scene now and hopefully will make the necessary repairs in the next few days. However, it doesn't look like the repairs will be finished in order to beam my Valentine's LUV special around the state. This is kind of disappointing because I really think the show turned out to be one of the better lovely specials I've ever done. The good news is that you can still listen on line via streamed audio at www.iowapublicradio.org and the Mason City frequency is still operational and IPR engineers are hoping to electronically reroute the signal to the Des Moines frequency before the end of the day. I'd love it if you could tune in for that...
The one question I have from the signage in the mall this week is, does it cheapen your love if you seek out the gifts that are marked down 30-60% for Valentine's Day?
Without any gigs for a couple of weeks, this is the last Blue Note you'll get for awhile (unless some hot blue news comes up) We sincerely appreciate all the love you've shown us on the Blue Highway all these years. Get someone ELSE to rub yer washboard tie, Cherry cheeseCAKE is the perfect way to celebrate Valentine's Day with the one you love (Love the one yer with) and always remember we love YOU...Bob Dorr & The Blue Band
