Benefit Gig For Nick Curran

Rhythm Room to host Nick Curran Benefit on February 15th. The Rhythm Room has put together a benefit for Nick Curran to take place on Monday 15th, 8pm. Nick Curran, 31, was recently diagnosed with tongue cancer and is not working while he undergoes radiation treatments. Nick has a long history at the Rhythm Room having played the venue with Ronnie Dawson, Kim Lenz, The Fabulous Thunderbirds, and of course his own band, Nick Curran & The Nitelifes. Nick recently reactive his solo career after a long stint with the Fabulous Thunderbirds, and he has a new CD out called Reform School Girl on the EclectoGroove Label. Appearing at the Rhythm Room Benefit will be The Rocket 88's, The Jump Back Brothers, The Dave Riley / Bob Corritore Juke Joint Blues Band, Jim Robertson, Nina Curri, and the Mike Eldred Trio, and more! Special thanks to Jim Robertson for putting this event together. Prayers to Nick for a speedy and full recovery.

CIBS Has The Blues. SUNDAY OCTOBER 25th BENIFIT AT BLUES ON GRAND
The Central Iowa Blues Society has the blues. Due to low attendance at the Living History Blues Fest, our beloved local blues society needs a major transfusion of cash. (click here to read an online story from the Des Moines Register.) Of course your local friendly neighborhood blues bands are riding to the rescue. On Sunday, at Blues on Grand, starting at 5pm, Sumpin Doo, Bob Pace, featuring Steve George, and Matt Woods And The Thunderbolts, will perform. Also a sumptuous feast will be supplied by the Machine Shed!!! Trust me anyone who lives here in the heartland knows how good the food is from the Machine Shed. The price for show and food is only 25 dollars! That is a great deal, three great bands, and food! Plus with all the money you save you can donate even more to CIBS! Furthermore, every dollar donated will be matched up to 3,500 bucks!

Bob Dorr And The Blue Band Update

I'm not sure I can even write a Blue Note in the middle of the day, but I wanted to wish you love and happiness for Valentine's Day and I literally fell asleep sitting at the keyboard this morning at 3am (waiting for the backdoor lady) so let's try this again!...Tomorrow night (Saturday-LUV day) we're helping the Jefferson County Hospital in Fairfield raise funds for their new mammogram program (why do I LOVE the idea of us being involved with this??) (there's probably TWO reasons, but that's not important now) The event starts at 7pm, Blue Band plays 8:30 til a little after 11:00. The people of Fairfield are very hip, aware, and worldly and have an affinity for fun. I understand that the snow that is predicted for tonight will be done a little after midnight and the temperature tomorrow is predicted to be in the 30s so the roads should be fine, plus Hwy 34 is now a four-lane all the way to Fairfiled (from Des Moines , Cedar Rapids, the Quad Cities-all roads lead to Fairfield) so driving should be no challenge. It's a good cause and a splendid time is guaranteed for all! Special thanks and LUV to Denise Gallagher for helping us get the gig and all the promotional work she's done to help generate a crowd for this event...
We don't have a gig for the rest of February (unless you'd like us to play in your basement/garage to help celebrate that hefty tax return you're getting) (go ahead, stimulate the economy by paying seven musicians to do their thing so they can pay their mortgages and put gas in the car/equipment truck)) So our next scheduled appearance is the monthly First Friday celebration at The Hub in Sparkle City, March 6, AND, we've just added THE FIRST OUTDOOR GIG OF THE YEAR!! (in a heated tent) at The Twisted Parrot's 7th annual St. Patrick's Weekend, 6500 Hickman Rd., Windsor Heights (suburban Des Moines) Saturday March 14, 7-11 p.m. We were part of this multi-day celebration last year and jumped at the chance to do it again! It was almost too hot in the tent last year, so get some Irish going for that weekend (remember green is nothing more than a little yellow and whole lot of BLUE!)...
You may have noticed that Iowa Public Radio's Studio One Network is off the air. We had a transmission line burnout (see, I'm not the only burnout associated with that network) on Monday and the weather has not cooperated with trying to climb the 1000 feet up the tower to fix it. A tower crew is on the scene now and hopefully will make the necessary repairs in the next few days. However, it doesn't look like the repairs will be finished in order to beam my Valentine's LUV special around the state. This is kind of disappointing because I really think the show turned out to be one of the better lovely specials I've ever done. The good news is that you can still listen on line via streamed audio at www.iowapublicradio.org and the Mason City frequency is still operational and IPR engineers are hoping to electronically reroute the signal to the Des Moines frequency before the end of the day. I'd love it if you could tune in for that...
The one question I have from the signage in the mall this week is, does it cheapen your love if you seek out the gifts that are marked down 30-60% for Valentine's Day?

Bell's recorded output has been prodigious, even despite his lengthy absence from the scene: he has contributed to well over 50 albums, including numerous solo efforts, duets with father Carey, and an extensive list of guest appearances. Since the onset of the new millennium, Bell has been steadily raising his profile; without question, Lurrie Bell is back and better than ever. Bell was voted Most Outstanding Guitar Player in the 2007 Living Blues magazine critics' poll, and was nominated for a 2007 Blues Music Award for Best Guitarist by the Blues Foundation. As producer Skoller's liner notes for Let's Talk About Love observe, "Lurrie is now a blues master at a needed time when there are very few blues masters left."

THE WOOD BROTHERS
While the Wood brothers grew up in Boulder, Colorado, Oliver moved to Atlanta and became a southerner, while Chris moved to New York City and became a Yankee. Now, after years of musical and geographical separation they have reunited. Oliver and his band, King Johnson (named after Freddy King and Robert Johnson) toured mostly in the southern states. Meanwhile, Chris was living in Manhattan playing everything from free jazz to rock and roll, there meeting his band mates to form Medeski Martin & Wood. Now The Wood Brothers have begun a collaboration that combines their shared childhood influences with everything they've learned since leaving home. Their music has a rootsy feel that blends blues, folk, and rock music in a guitar/bass duo. The brothers’ new album, "Loaded" produced by John Medeski, was released on Blue Note Records, April 1, 2008.

KING JOHNSON
King Johnson was formed by singer/guitarist Oliver Wood bassist/songwriter Chris Long and drummer Greg Baba; trombonist Adam Mewherter and saxophonist John Longo later added dimension to their album, Cats & Dogs. Marcus James Henderson replaced Longo in their self-titled 1998 release.
With five CDs (Cats & Dogs, the self-titled King Johnson, Luck So Strange, Hot Fish Laundry Mat and the new, completely live effort, Live '05) and with many miles logged in the US and abroad, King Johnson is touring less and focusing on new collaborations. Voted Atlanta's best band in the "blues" category for half of a decade, King Johnson is praised by the Creative Loafing Magazine for "incorporating hook-heavy writing and facile playing with New Orleans brass funk and jazz."
FELIX AND THE CATS
The original Felix and the Cats included Paul Linden on keyboard and harp, and Matt Sickles on bass. Along with original drummer of Sean’s band, Terrence Prather, it is this configuration that is reassembling in Sean’s honor. The list of blues greats that Felix has backed up or shared the stage with include: B.B. King, Archie Bell, Little Joe Blue, Sam Lay, Hubert Sumlin, ZuZu Bollin, Eddie Clearwater, Susan Tedeschi, Sean Costello, Sil Austin, Grady "Fats" Jackson, Eddie Tigner, Bo Diddley, Smokin Joe Kubek & B'nois King, Mike Morgan & the Crawl, Hashbrown and many more! Felix's song "Wait for Me" is the title track of Grammy nominated singer Susan Tedeschi's 2nd CD. It is also featured on the New West DVD "Susan Tedeschi: Live at Austin City Limits." Felix has been cited by Sean as being one of the three most influential people of his career.
JON LIEBMAN
Jon Liebman, born and raised in Atlanta and got his musical start in Washington,D.C. There he studied with players such as Big Joe Maher, Joe Stanley, John Cocuzzi, Doug Jay, Pete Kanaras and Mark Wenner of The Nighthawks, and others. In Atlanta, he toured and performed locally with best friend Sean Costello up until his passing in April, 2008. He has recorded with Bill Sheffield, Larry Griffith , Forrest McDonald, Sean Costello, Nick Longo, Lee Griffin and many others. Jon brings his musical talent and love of Sean to this effort.
SOUL SHAKERS
The Soul Shakers is a band out of Atlanta consisting of Art Holliday (guitar & vocals), Jacob Holliday (bass guitar), Eric Pullen (drums) and Adam Holliday (piano and organ). Art, Jacob and Adam are brothers and life long friends of Eric Pullen. The Soul Shakers play a variety of music from old school blues, soul, swing, rhythm and soul rock n roll to many other obscure styles. The band is influenced by many of the greats like Otis Rush, Earl Hooker, Booker T & The Mg‚s and Bob Dylan. Eric has the distinction of being Sean's best friend since age 9 and his very first drummer.

March 1, 2009 will mark the first annual Sean Costello Memorial Fund for Bipolar Research benefit concert at the North Atlanta High Center for the Arts. In Sean’s honor, fellow musicians and friends, Lurrie Bell [2008 Living Blues Awards for Blues Artist of the Year and Most Outstanding Guitarist], The Wood Brothers [debut disc named one of National Public Radio’s top ten discoveries of 2006], King Johnson, Felix and the Cats with Jon Liebman and the Soul Shakers will lend their time and talent to this cause. The original lineup also included Jason Ricci, who will no longer be able to perform due to a conflict in his performance schedule. Although Ricci will not be part of the lineup, he will be donating the proceeds of his alternate performance to The Sean Costello Memorial Fund for Bipolar Research. Ricci hopes to lend his time in the second annual benefit concert.

ATLANTA, GA - The Sean Costello Memorial Fund for Bipolar Research will hold its first benefit concert Sunday, March 1, 2009 at the North Atlanta High Center for the Arts. Sean was a beloved blues musician from Atlanta, who was internationally acclaimed, and in his honor, fellow musicians Lurrie Bell [2008 Living Blues Awards for Blues Artist of the Year and Most Outstanding Guitarist], The Wood Brothers, King Johnson, Felix and the Cats with Jon Liebman and the Soul Shakers will lend their time and talent to this cause. Doors will open at 4:30p.m. for review of silent auction items with entertainment to follow at 5:00p.m. Tickets are $30 and will be available online and at the door. Food and beverages will be available for purchase. Donations are tax deductible.
The benefit emerges as the first project of The Sean Costello Memorial Fund for Bipolar Research, an organization founded by his mother, Debbie Costello Smith, upon Sean’s untimely passing. Sean was acclaimed for his musical prowess at a very early age. He was designated the Beale Street Blues Society Best Performer at age 15; was nominated for a W.C. Handy Award for his album Cuttin' In in 2000; was voted Best Blues Band in Creative Loafing and Atlanta magazine; was featured on the cover of Blues Revue in February of 2002; and was named the Best New Act by the French Blues Feste in 2003. Most recently, Sean was nominated for two Blues Music Awards: Best Contemporary Blues Album and Best Contemporary Blues Male Artist of 2008.
Sean resided in Atlanta, but was known throughout Europe and the U.S. as a talented, but humble musician who readily shared his talent with young and old. He played with musical greats BB King, Buddy Guy, The Fabulous Thunderbirds, Hubert Sumlin, Elvis Costello, Etta James, Pinetop Perkins, Bo Diddley, Little Jimmy King, Nappy Brown, Bob Margolin, and many others. He formed special and lasting relationships with Felix Reyes, Donnie McCormick and Levon Helm. Sean had the honor of playing for James Cotton’s birthday, as he was Mr. Cotton’s favorite band.
Sean passed away suddenly in April last year on the eve of his 29th birthday, after quietly battling depression and anxiety for more than 10 years. It was only a year before his passing that Sean was diagnosed with Bipolar Disorder. At the time of his passing, he was in treatment to overcome the debilitating symptoms of this mood disorder and the often associated self-medication.
The Sean Costello Memorial Fund for Bipolar Research is a non-profit organization that has attracted a dedicated Board of Directors and an Advisory Board of renowned clinical researchers as a direct result of Sean’s reputation as an artist, an exceptional person and friend. In creating the fund, the board hopes to increase research for treatment, develop and support education for early diagnosis and intervention, and eventually create a program for musicians and artists seeking holistic support in their effort to lead functional, healthy lives.

John Dee Holeman Benifit Concert With Andy Coats
Andy sent me an email about a nice event he is particpating in to help defray some medical costs for John Dee Holeman. Holeman is one of the last authenic Piedmont style musicians around and he has had a big influence on Andy. If you are in the North Carolina area then check them out.
As you know these old bluesman are living treasures. Unlike other styles of music where yesterdays artists are quickly thrown into the dustbin of one hits wonders and hasbeens. The blues celebrates it past and it living breathing history. We never throw aside our old artists but embrace them. So if near Durham NC, go check out the real blues of John Dee Holman.

As you know, Mr. Holeman has become a mentor and friend to me, and is one of the few “real deal” Piedmont blues musicians still living.
Here’s a brief summary of his accomplishments, from Sherry Johnson:
John Dee Holeman, a history lesson in blues, is a 1988 recipient of the National Endowment for the Arts National Heritage Fellowship, the highest honor that the U.S. bestows upon traditional artists (profile at www.nea.gov/honors/heritage/fellows/fellow.php?id=1988_06). In 1994, he was awarded the North Carolina Folk Heritage Award (see www.ncarts.org/artist_page.cfm?ser=35889&num=35389&). No artificial sweetener here -- this is the real stuff. Warm Whiskey Band Doing Benifit in Kirkman Iowa
The Warm Whiskey Band who record at Junior Motel are playing a benefit in Kirkman Iowa. Those of you in the area of the Loess Hills should head over there since this is going to help some one in need. Do a good thing on October 4th and head to the little town of Kirkman and hear my friends the Warm Whiskey Band! Here is their press release.
We here in the sleepy little town of Kirkman, Iowa have discovered the talent of The Warm Whiskey Band.I am the owner of the towns only bar, and with a little effort, have secured this awsome band for my Fall Benefit Poker Run on October 4th.The benefit is for a local friend, who has endured heart and colon surgeries, and is on the mend, but in need of help with medical bills.The days events include a Bikers Poker run through the Loess Hills, ending up at The Beer Barn and Grill (my place), for a barbq, "refreshments" and a beer garden show from this awsome band.There is free primitive camping at the towns city park, for all weary travelers.Registration for the poker run is Sat. The 4th, 11:00 to 1:00 PM. ( $20.00 entry fee - all vehicles are welcome). Poker hand drawing at 7:00 PM and great tunes start at 9:00. Everyone is welcome

The Next Great Drummer Hosts A Competition and Fundraiser To Benefit Katrina Survivors and Children
Eric Seats, drummer to major recording artists, a single father and mentor to local youths using drums, along with his business partner Chrystal Allen, and Spaun Drum Company in Chino, California present a one day “Drum-Off”
Eric Seats and Chrystal Allen are co-creators of an upcoming reality show entitled, The Next Great Drummer.
The “Drum-Off”
Major and local companies are asked to donate items for invited children of the Chino Boys and Girls Clubs, children from area schools, and kids from local area skate parks, who are our special guests for that day.
The Items needed are bottles of water, bottled juices, school supplies, drum supplies/equipment, music/CD's, packaged food items (ex. chips or cookies for the visiting area children).
Additionally, free vendor space will be made available to those vendors who make donations of their product, water and various other drinks and snacks for the competitors, visiting children and general public.
About Eric Seats:
Eric is part of the Key Beats, Inc. team, which was established in 1997 by both Rapture Stewart and Eric Seats.
Eric and Rapture got into the music game touring and working with Montel Jordan, and from there, Rapture went on to be the music director for Timbaland, Missy Elliott, Aaliyah, Ginuwine and Playa. Timbaland soon noticed their production talents and signed them to a publishing deal with Warner/ Chappell. Missy also got on board and began to work with them in the studio. They developed a very unique chemistry with Missy right away. Their first song produced with her was the chart topping 702 hit "Where My Girls At". This song paved the way for what was to come. Soon after, they signed a management deal with Blackground Entertainment and began on their musical journey.
The dynamic duo went on to produce songs for the movie and soundtrack "Romeo Must Die". They caught the ears of hit song writer and Destiny’s Child member Beyonce Knowles while producing a song for them on this project. They went on to produce the song "Independent Women (Pt. 2)" for their "Survivor" record. This was the original version of the song that was recorded for the movie "Charlie’s Angels". After the success of the soundtrack, Aaliyah wanted to work with them on her next project as well. They went to work right away with hit makers Static and Black of the group Playa. They also developed a very unique chemistry with Static. They went on to produce half of her record "Aaliyah" which included the 1 hit "Rock Da Boat" written by Static. This solidified their place in the music game and they went on to work on numerous projects.
Key Beats, Inc. has worked collectively and individually with many different artists, whether producing and writing in the studio or performing live.
