Blues Historian Review: Erick Hovey, Recylced Souls, Blues Farm

Erick Hovey is not your typical farmer, nor is he your typical blues guitar player, yet if you met him on the street you would think you are meeting Joe Average. However, the 5th generation gentleman farmer from Badger is one of Iowa's best guitar slingers in the state. As typical with Erick, he doesn't do things like the rest of us. Instead of releasing one CD, he puts out two. Recycled Souls, and Blues Farm, are two great discs of blues, jazz, and blues rock. Both these discs are similar. You really can't put Erick into a box. In one track he sounds like Eric Clapton, then the next song he is David Gilmore, or chunking along like a train in a jump blues style. Hovey's guitar just soars through out this disk. It isn't that over the top, wish I was Stevie Ray Vaughn style of guitar, but the playing of a guy who knows what he is doing and making great music.

Furthermore, his writing style is incredibly eclectic.
Erick kind of takes words from out of the ether, and sometimes an almost zen like quality of word play. Then at other times it is just down and dirty blues.

Throughout the disk Erick is supported by Dan Lodden on bass, Jeff Forman on drums, and the breathy ethereal vocals of Heather Kelly of H And K. A few friends drop by to help Erick out, Andy Schinder plays bass on Sweet Fire Rain, from Recycled Soul. While harp maestro Andy Blumenthal blows on harp on Blues Farm. Then there is also some piano player I have never heard of named Tom Gary, that sort of plays piano and organ on a few tunes:-)

This is a great CD to pick up. I can't recommend one over the other, just buy BOTH!! CD Baby has both discs For Recycled Soul Click HERE, for Blues Farm Click HERE.

Erick Hovey: Jamming

I found a nice clip of my buddy Erick Hovey playing for the small, but mighty Lizard Creek Blues Society in Fort Dodge Iowa.

Taylor Hicks: Wedding Day Blues

Another fan video of Taylor Hicks performing in about every small to large bar and stage across this great land. Now Hicks is really a bluesman:-)

Walkin' a Dusty Road on the Radio

Just for you folks who prefer a simpler and gentler time, we hooked up with some RED HOUSE Records troubadors. This week on Hammered By The Blues ( Sunday on KOWZ 10pm on 1170am. Classic episodes rebroadcast on line Tues at 9am and Sat at 11am on www.boundarywatersradio.com) we traverse the dusty back roads of the blues startin' our journey with Guy Davis and a few powerful tunes off 'Sweetheart Like You'. We stop by the beautiful fields of grain and pick up what Greg Brown is layin' down off 'Dream City'. We take time for a little skinny dip in the creek with the wafting sweet sounds of Jorma Kaukonen off 'River of Time'. To finish up our soul healing stroll thru the country side of the blues we hang with Ray Bonneville and some simply wonderful offerings off 'Goin' By Feel'. Find a cool spot in the shade for your rockin' chair; kick off your shoes; and let your troubles drift away.
When it comes to great blues we got the stuff;
We don't waste yer time talkin' about some fluff;
This week we did country blues both raw and mellow;
Walkin' barefoot in the sun so bright and yellow!

Robert Johnson
The King of the Delta Blues Singers. Robert Johnson Lives.
by Robin Piggott
Probably the most enigmatic Singer and Guitarist of the twentieth Century is now one of the most revered and respected of all Musicians who make up the Genre of the "Blues " .I speak of course about the wonderful Robert Leroy Johnson . Born in 1911 in Hazelhurst Mississippi, in a Deep South plantation, he, in his pitifully short life has become one of the founding Fathers of the Blues.

He recorded only 36 sides over a period of a couple of months between November 1936 and June 1937 in San Antonio Texas .These remarkable recordings still bring tears to the eyes of Blues aficionados the world over and shaped the face of the music of today.

The post-war Blues of Chicago owe a great debt to Robert Johnson and it is sad to think what might have been had he lived! In just a few short years he matured from a young black guitarist into a superstar of his day .The often repeated legend was perpetuated by his contemporaries that he sold his soul to the Devil in return for his amazing guitar techniques.

His story is one of hardship tinged with great success in his own locality of the Delta and women were said to be rendered helpless as he sang his compositions. His death at the hand of a jealous husband at the age of twenty seven robbed the world of one of Americas finest ever Musicians and Blues artists.

Years after his death,in 1938, a photograph was unearthed, one of only two in existence. It shows not only his inimitable style of dress but quite remarkable slender fingers which helped him to achieve his unique mastery of the bottleneck guitar technique. He is pictured in a chalk-stripe suit which would have been somewhat overstated for a man in his position at that time. When I first saw that photograph the one thing above all else, that stood out were his beautiful long fingers that enveloped the guitar fingerboard and obviously caressed it as though it was a Woman helpless in his arms!

What about his subject matter... well nothing much has changed in the passing of time; the age old, painful process of unrequited love; of restless yearnings to move on down the line to pastures new ; to unfaithful liaisons; and of course much sexual innuendo.

Robert Johnson's skill as a poet of the time and place is absolutely unsurpassed in my estimation! For sure he borrowed words, phrases, and guitar licks from his peers, but moulded them into something quite unique that not only stands the test of time but has a relevance to today's Rock music.

There cannot be any Blues Band on this Planet that has not been influenced by Johnson and his music and this is a testament to the greatness of the man! The list of recordings of Johnson's songs by modern artists is endless and forms the backbone of the resurgence of the Blues in the early sixties in Britain and continues to this day! Most of the long lasting Bands of the R,n,B revolution of 62, 63, and on into the seventies have recorded several of Roberts songs.

Notable amongst these would be The Rolling Stones, John Mayall's Bluesbreakers, Cream,The Allman Brothers Band, Led Zeppelin, Eric Clapton, Elmore James, and many more. Johnson's songs transcribed particularly well to the new Electric guitar line-ups of the fifties and on into the sixties. Probably one of the most popular of his songs, which I can't imagine anyone not having heard in a modern format, is of course Crossroad Blues.

This song was recorded live at the Fillmore in San Francisco in 1968 by the great Eric Clapton and his two buddies, Jack Bruce on bass and stickman, Ginger Baker .This song also featured in Cream's farewell concert at the Albert Hall in London in 1969. I doubt whether Johnson envisaged this treatment of his song when he wrote it or that his poetry would one day be the cornerstone of the Blues Revival of the Sixties. It is a poignant end to his story that the great impresario John Hammond, who later went onto sign -up a young Bob Dylan in 1962, was just too late when he searched for Robert to appear in the momentous concert at Carnegie Hall in 1938 .Robert Johnson was dead but his spirit and his music will live on for ever in the hearts and minds of the lovers of the music we call THE BLUES .

Blues Historian Review: Shirley Johnson, Blues Attack, and Various Artists: It Ain't over

Delmark records has a couple of great releases out now that all blues lovers need to grab. The first is Shirley Johnson and Blues Attack. Blues Attack, is a great disc that follows the spirit of Chicago blues, but also slips in some nice soul music for variety. Johnson is a great vocalists, and is just one of many great unsung blues performers that are keeping the blues alive and well. The band keeps a great grove throughout the disc. They also keep that rough and tumble live spirit going as well. Many times a studio recording can sound stiff and lack life, but Johnson's band does a great job of keeping it real. Luke Pytel does a great job on lead guitar. He is not super showy, but has great tone. I take tone over fast every time. If there is one problem with the disc, it is the cover tunes, Unchain My Heart, and 634-5789. Personally I like those songs, and play them myself, but they are best played for an audience. there is no doubt in my mind that when Shirley and the band start up those two songs that the dance floor fills up and everyone, band included has a great time. However, it is very hard to translate that kind of live energy on disc. Yet, don't let that keep you from buying this disk. The rest of the CD makes up for it with some great music from the heart.

Various artists: It Ain't Over.

Just when you thought the 55th anniversary of Delmark records was over, here comes two more presents for all of their fans. On March 7th 2008, at Buddy Guy's Legends they had a 55th anniversary party for Delmark. Somebody was pretty smart and had not only the audio recorder going, but the video camera as well! All I can say is wow from Zora Young's Til The Fat Lady Sings, to Tail Dragger's My Woman Is Gone, is 11 great live blues recordings one after another. Joining Zora Young, and Tail Dragger, is legend Jimmy Johnson, Aaron Moore, the late Little Arthur Duncan, the amazing Lurrie Bell, blues and soul singer Shirley Johnson, and the great Chicago Bluesman Eddie Shaw. However, if listening to great music is not enough, then check out the DVD of the show. Delmark continues their movement towards DVD, with this new release. I unfortunately did not get a chance to see the DVD since I just got the CD, but I am certain from the clip below, and from past DVD's that I have received from Delmark that this is going to be a great show. Furthermore anything that has one of the last performances of the much loved Chicago blues icon Little Arthur Duncan is worth the price of the DVD all by itself.

The nice thing about Delmark releases (or at least the ones I have listened to in the last 2 years) is that they always keep that live spirit in their cds. Too many times a recording can sound canned, and boring, but Delmark does a great job of keeping it loose, and keepin dem blues alive.

Bob Dorr And The Blue Band Update

Remember when you bought "45s" and the flip side was often (pt. 2)? (Like Joey Dee & The Starlighters-The Peppermint Twist pt. 1 & The Peppermint Twist pt. 2) You don't remember? Then either you are suffering the effects of being an aging hippie (like me) or YOU'RE TOO DAMN YOUNG TO BE READING THIS!!...

So, speaking of being so damn young, how 'bout that Nathan Peoples?! What a treat to have Nathan playing in the band Thursday evening in Grinnell. And the treat is yours the next two nights! Quick, before he escapes back to Colorado:

This evening, Fri. 7/17, 5-7:30p, Ottumwa Live At 5! Downtown park, next to the Hotel Ottumwa. Hometown saxman Dave Sharp will join Nathan in the horn section and we'll be celebrating the Ottumwa Heights College Class of '79 reunion along with reconnecting with Blue People who have seen our band in Ottumwa for over a quarter of a century...

Saturday 7/18, The Pleasant Hill (eastern suburb of Des Moines) Summerfest. Hopefully, all Capitol City Blue People will be there to hear Nate play that saxophone one more time before he's off to the mountains again and to encourage him to move back to Ioway! (I asked him when he was moving home and he said "as soon as The Cubs win the World Series") (I'll be dead by then) (so will he) (still, it makes me want to root for the Cubbies) There's fun and family entertainment all day at this festival, The Blue Band plays 7-10pm. Wear yer Blue Band windbreaker cuz baby, it's gonna be a little cool out there!...

Then Sunday, 7/19 it's on to Red Oak to play for the Pork Belly Ventures RAGBRAI party. Here's what it says on our chat page: Pork Belly Ventures is an independent company whose business is selling camping support to people who ride RAGBRAI. They set up a large camp and provide support (showers/food/shelter/CAKE) to a few hundred people. They are hiring us to provide entertainment from 6-8pm on their campgrounds which is located at St. Mary's Catholic Church, 1510 Highland Ave, in Red Oak. Last year, virtually anyone could come to the show. If you have trouble, feel free to say WE'RE WITH THE BAND!...

Davis checked in and says things are going well in his new job at Kaplan University. Unfortunately, that means no time to be the Blue bass player. I'm going to miss his great voice and stage energy. Fortunately, Mark Linda and Martin Watson have been able to step in on short notice and do fabulous work. We're hoping to make a good impression on both of those guys so they'll consider joining us full-time. In the meantime, spread the word to all bassmen/women that we're looking for that fat bottom end...!

I got some real nice, encouraging, emails and voice messages about my new blues show on Iowa Public Radio. The debut of the program (Blue Avenue) was last Sunday. I hope you can join me this week, and every Sunday evening, 5-6:30p, for all kinds of blues music, followed by the Sunday Night Beatles Medley in it's new time slot, 6:30-7pm. This week, The Beatles as a blues band! Find your local frequency or listen on line at www.iowapublicradio.org...

I'm amazed that my body has held up as well as it has this month. (only 3 chiro adjustments in 18 days) By the time we're all back home Sunday night, we will have played 10 one-nighters in 18 days and driven about 2000 miles! See yas on the Blue Highway, watch out for 15,000 bike riders in the middle of the road (why don't we do it in the road?) Speaking of the Beatles, wasn't it fun seeing Paul McCartney on the Letterman show last night?! All Sir Paul needed with that dapper shirt was a ZYDECO TIE! Perhaps he'll show up in Ottumwa to get one. (or not) Always remember we love you, yeah yeah yeah...Bob Dorr & The Blue Band

Chick Willis New CD

From Blues Critic Media

All New Studio Album Coming from CHICK WILLIS
Chick Willis "Hit & Run Blues"
BEN 1
Label: Benevolent Blues

Everybody involved in this project set out to create the “ultimate Chick Willis” CD and we believe we have. 100% Organic. Real Horns. Real Organ. A Real Rhythm section. Real Blues and a lil’ Soul from the Stoop Down Man aka The Don Of The Blues. Great picking and playing, passionate singing and, yes, some of that Chick Willis humor!

“HIT & RUN BLUES” features all new tracks from hard Blues shuffles like “Houdini Lover”, “1,2,3,4,5 Shots Of Whiskey”, “Country Lovin’ Man” & more, to horn n’ B-3 laden Soul Blues like “Soul Of A Man” & “Love To See You Smile”.

Topping it off though is the long-awaited sequel to his mega-hit “Stoop Down”. He takes it to another level with “Stoop Down Low”

The legendary Stoop Down man, Chick Willis, can properly be called “the Don” because he’s the “Godfather” of today’s Party Blues. “Stoop Down Baby” is the precursor to every double entendre-filled hit out there. But this new CD is designed to get Chick the recognition he deserves as a Blues artist, rather than simply a funny storyteller. We say, “mission accomplished”!

CHILE PEPPER REPORTS:

The thing I love about the Court Street Grill besides the Victorian architecure, friendly vibe and great juke box are those sweet potato fries. You can eat them without messing up your lipstick! They go perfectly with some take home hot chicken wings, steak or ribs, too. Wash it all down with some lemonade, recently added on the menu in my honor.....Umm, good! Just ask Crawlinkingsnake or Mojo Mama, Spider and Helen about the food, because we were all there Friday to hear Eileen Jewell and her band do a "Rhythm On the River" show down by the river in Pomeroy. The boats drifted peacefully on the river as the full crowd heard a tiny wisp of an entertainer and her band sing a sampling of genres of music that included blues, country , gospel and folk. I really liked the way she sang Billie Holiday; she had a lyrical haunt to her voice. Sweet but sad at the same time. I wonder if the boaters thought the Greek muses were calling them to shore as the sun faded away. She covered a wide range of songs that had something for everybody. I was glad I made the short drive and look forward to the next "Rhythm on the River" show featuring Mississippi Heat from Chicago. You have to love that Jackie Welker for his strong effort for promoting the arts via music in little ole' Pomeroy, Ohio.

Emerson Sports Grill
4000 Emerson Ave, Parkersburg, WV 304-422-7655
Hey folks, if you consider yourself a live music fan, then it's time YOU came out and started supporting one of Parkersburg's FEW live music venues. This place has gone from a brash, loud, smoke-filled pick-up joint with no service (the old Front Row) to a smaller, more cozy and intimate listening place for acoustic music. On Friday nights, they feature some of the regions best singer songwriters and acoustic musicians unplugged. The beer is ice-cold, the wings and burgers are tasty, and you won't smell any cigarettes -- the place has been completely remodeled. The music is only one night -- FRIDAYS. It's really a nice place. Come out and support it, or we'll lose it just like the other live music venues that have given up on you. Check it out. the Voice.

About The Blues, Jazz & Folk Music Society
www.bjfm.org P.O. Box 2122, Marietta, Ohio 45750
The Blues, Jazz & Folk Music Society is a non-profit, 501 (c) 3 all-volunteer "force" of music enthusiasts on a mission to enhance the appreciation of American Roots Music in the Mid-Ohio Valley and we do it by presenting concerts, workshops, conferences, and a forum for education and development in the schools.

The BJFM Society celebrates and perpetuates blues and roots music as a traditional, evolutionary, and uniquely American art form. During the grant period, we will continue to present live music in genres not normally available in a small town like ours, to educate and expose our audiences to music new and unfamiliar to many of them. Our goal is to keep blues, jazz and roots music alive in our area.

With the help of volunteers from our membership, and an
8-member board of directors, the BJFM Society will continue to produce and present our "core events" plus other shows throughout the year as the opportunity presents itself. The BJFM Society has also undertaken the expense of production and presentation of the nationally recognized multicultural "Blues in the Schools" program here in our local schools
