Blues Blast Magazine is proud to be a media sponsor of the 25th International Blues Challenge. The silver anniversary of this great Blues competition promises to be one the best ever put on by the Blues Foundation.
In case you are not familiar with this event, it is an international search for the best undiscovered Blues band on the planet. Each year the Blues Foundation's 160 affiliate Blues societies from all over the globe hold "local" or "regional" Blues challenges.
They send the winners to compete in the semifinals in Memphis in February. There are categories for both bands and solo/duet acts.
In 2008, 100 bands and 60 solo/duo acts filled the clubs up and down Beale Street for the semi-finals on Thursday and Friday. This is a Blues show you do not want to miss. It is literally the worlds largest gathering of Blues Bands!
Beale Street is the legendary Blues Mecca in Memphis. Each club on Beale has 6 or 8 acts competing in the semi-finals. By the rules of the competition, each act plays exactly 30 minutes all using the same stage setup for a panel of judges and a packed crowd of Blues fans. They are judged on Blues content, vocal and/or instrumental talent, originality and stage presence by a different panels of judges each night (See scoring criteria HERE).
The scores are averaged and the top scoring act from each club advances to the finals that are held at the Orpheum Theater on Saturday. (To see some photos of last years fun CLICK HERE)

Blues Wanderings
We made it out to a packed Blue Monday this week to hear the Memphis based Delta Highway.
The Alamo was jammed maybe because most Illinois state employees were off the next day for a holiday (Veterans Day).
Or maybe it was this great band belting out one killer Blues song after another.
Brandon Santini on vocal and harp along with Justin Sulek on guitar fit perfectly in a Piedmont groove with a driving rhythm laid down by Paul Chase on bass and Keven Eddy on drums.
This is a very tight band with some great original music.
Give them a listen if they make it anywhere near you!

Scott Ellison - Ice Storm

Scott Ellison is living on “Tulsa Time.” He’s gonna keep his watch set to it, because you know that he’s been through it, he’s livin’ on Tulsa Time. That song was written by Danny Flowers, but both Ellison’s album and life story conjure up memories of Eric Clapton’s version dedicated to Eric’s friends from Tusla OK.

Born around 1955, Scott is from Tulsa which was a hot bed of musical talent in the 1970s. Eric Clapton and Freddie King's bands were both based in Tulsa as was Leon Russell's Shelter Records. Influenced and electrified by the British Invasion bands, moved by Motown, and touched by the Soul coming out of Memphis, it wasn't long before Scott started his own band.

In 1977 he began touring with Jessica James (Conway Twitty's daughter), and by 1981 Clarence "Gatemouth" Brown had Scott in his band playing rhythm. A move to LA in the mid 80s found Scott with The Box Tops, The Shirelles, J.J. Jackson, The Drifters, The Coasters, and Gary "U.S." Bonds. By the 90s Scott had formed his own Blues Band and opened up shows for such legends as Joe Cocker, Roy Orbison, The Fabulous T-Birds, Leon Russell, Bobby Bland, and Buddy Guy.

Throughout his career Scott has been prolific songwriter and has composed and released numerous CDs. Scott continues to tour the US and Canada, and most recently he opened for B.B. King at the Tulsa Performing Arts Center.

Displaying his string picking, slide guitar work, and rough-edged vocals, “Ice Storm” is a major label release of his best works since 1997. Only tracks 6, 9, and 10 were recorded as recently as 2006-07. Plenty of effort has gone into the production as no less than 29 different artists contributed, whew!

Fans of Eric Clapton’s blues-rock during his Tulsa days will relate to the overall sounds, especially the wah-wah found in “Who Will Be The Fool” and “Keys to My Heart,” which opens acoustically with high pitched slide quickly underpinning. The solo vocal is soon joined by a chorus of background singers.

Radio-ready, and the first that I played on WKCC, is the opening track “Steamin.’” When Scott sings “steamin’” as two syllables, the organ perfectly matches his vocal key for a dynamic man/machine harmony. This up tempo shuffle is a winner.

“Big Blue Car,” the second track, is another full-production number with a comfortable, if familiar, feel - not a raw or rough edge anywhere. “King of the Blues” with its popping rhythm also features some nice burning guitar solos. “Cadillac Woman,” as the name implies, is made for playing loud and driving fast – you know, pass cars - take chances!

“Why’d You Lie To Me?” is made for slide guitar fans. Ellison propels the number from slash and burn into the stratosphere, then throws in a surprise ending. The cooking Albert Collins-esque instrumental title track adds horns to the mix. It is called “Ice Storm,” but it’s hot!

While the full production numbers often break no new ground, Scott’s guitar and vocals intrigue me enough to want to see him perform live. According to his Myspace site, he performs gigs as a trio backed only by bass and drums. A stripped down set like that would be welcome any-time, not just on Tulsa time

The Chicago Vlues & Bluegrass Festival on November 22nd, 2008 is a one-day festival hosted by the Congress Theatre. Nalle, Magic Slim, Omar Dykes - Chapel Hill

Rarely do we get the chance to hear some of our electric guitar heroes unplug. To hear true mastery put on display. All the electrical sustains and tricks have to be made with the hands, fingers, and a flick of the wrist.

Acoustic, live music for blues is where it all began. The heroes and founders of this great American music didn’t have the luxury of microphones or amplifiers. They shouted and beat on their six strings harder and played with a necessity for strength and resonance.

Take 2 of well-known electric blues players (one THE premier Chicago Blues player) and put them in this all acoustic setting with Denmark’s largest link to American roots music. Chapel Hill thus becomes a comfortable acoustic jam in the studio for these three men: Nalle, Omar Dykes (Omar & the Howlers), and Magic Slim.

Slim brings along a few of his infamous Teardrops on this trip to Denmark (Jon McDonald on slide guitar on “Little Red Rooster” and Michael Blakemore on harmonica for “Love My Baby”). The rest of the musicians are highly touted American roots music players from Denmark. Mixing in banjo, stand up bass, harmonica, and National Steel slide at times; the album is mostly a two guitar approach with either Slim or Omar or both handling the duties. One or two of the three usually handled the vocals (Nalle sings 4, Omar sings 4, Omar & Nalle together on 1 duet, and Slim on 4).

Nalle, a name with which I wasn’t familiar until this album, has been a Blues, Rock, and Soul musician in Denmark since the late 60s. His passion for the music is obvious. Vocally he stands up well next to his two formidable American counterparts.

Some of the songs fall into similar vibes and grooves. Some of Omar Dykes vocal tracks sound like left overs from his On the Jimmy Reed Highway project from last year. Most of the tracks here are covers ranging from Willie Dixon, Luther Allison, Robert Nighthawk, and Junior Wells along with one Magic Slim original.

For traditional blues fans, this album should be a must have. It will likely fly under the radar here in the States because its only available overseas. However, this stripped down acoustic feel is a welcomed addition to Magic Slim’s daunting catalog. It’s also something that Magic Slim fans have never seen out of him, a completely acoustic, and no frills side. Go out and hunt this one down on the internet. You wont be sorry.

The album is an instant classic. Like the old days, this one is not sugar coated and doesn’t have any studio tricks. This is just the straight down home acoustic blues from one of America’s greatest Chicago Bluesmen with a little help from some friends.

Ronnie Earl and the Broadcasters – Hope Radio Sessions DVD

Ronnie Earl and the Broadcasters and Stony Plain Records recently released the “Hope Radio Sessions” on DVD. Recorded at Wellspring Sound in Acton Massachusetts, on April 21 and 22, 2007, the studio setting is responsible for an excellent sound quality, an aspect that often suffers in live recordings. The close and intimate setting provides viewers the ability to feel part of the audience of friends and acquaintances present during the making of the “Hope Radio” CD, which is one of their best live releases to date.

In setting the ideal atmosphere immediately, ‘hope’ being the theme of the CD and the DVD, viewers are given a quick glance of a baseball jersey hanging upon the wall behind the band. It displays the number 42 and the name [Jackie] Robinson, the former Brooklyn Dodger who became the first African-American to play in the major leagues. An athlete who broke through countless boundaries, first to be accepted and then to become one of the greatest players of all-time, his moral fiber was one that undoubtedly contained a huge amount of ‘hope’. This is appropriate for another reason as well, as Ronnie is known to be a huge baseball fan.

Following a wonderful introduction by friend and admirer Reverend Deborah J Blanchard, who points out the soothing and spiritual aspect of Ronnie Earl’s talent, he and the Broadcasters perform “Bobby’s Bop”. The progressive blues romp and brisk jazzy melody finds Ronnie and keyboardist Dave Limina trading solo duties. Pay special attention to Limina, and the manner in which the Berklee alumnus exerts his simultaneous talents on the B-3. One can listen to “Bobby’s Bop” repeatedly, and hear something new from both Earl and Limina each and every time.

Ronnie then gets deep into slow blues expressionism in “Blues For the Homeless”, in which his communicative licks talk amiably to the audience. The guitarist displays his unique ability to play a slow blues with altruistic licks of hope and harmony, which apply a facet of optimism into the song’s title and subject matter. He then gets the intimate crowd standing for a vigorous performance of “Eddie’s Gospel Groove”. The song’s Latin feel is augmented by Limina’s organ technique, as both he and Ronnie bring a Santana element to it, especially early on. Prior to the band entering an eight minute blues excursion of multiple elements, the intro is climactic in “I Am With You”. “Kay My Dear’ summons a tender slow blues atmosphere again, a place where Ronnie is at his best. “New Gospel Tune” takes it in a gospel direction, a blues approach in which he’s quite at home with these days as well, as his spiritual attribute and warm personality shine more than ever in these performances.

That partially describes night one of the recorded performance. Night two is a continuation of the soothing instrumental blues of Ronnie Earl and the Broadcasters, made up of Earl on guitar (Stratocaster of course), Dave Limina on organ and piano, Jimmy Mouradian on bass, and Lorne Entress on drums. The DVD is a desirable companion to the actual “Hope Radio” CD, primarily because of its additions and bonus features, which include a wonderful acoustic rendition of “I Shall Not Be Moved” and an intimate interview with the blues guitar master, conducted by friend Holger Peterson, founder of Stony Plain Records.

Doris Carr RIP

RIP Doris Carr: This sad news just in from Roger Stolle: Mrs. Doris Carr of Lula, Mississippi, passed away early this morning at age 80, according to long-time Carr Family friend and former Rooster Blues co-owner Patty Johnson of Clarksdale. Known by many as the beloved wife of legendary blues drummer Sam Carr, Miss Doris was also a blues singer in her own right and a caretaker of other Deltans in the past. She is survived by her husband, Sam Carr -- the son of slide guitar master Robert Nighthawk and drummer of the world-famous Jelly Roll Kings. Sam and Doris Carr have been together since she was 13 years old. Mrs. Carr had been in poor health for some time. Mr. Carr still resides in Lula. Funeral arrangements are pending with more information forthcoming.

1000 Plays!!!!!!

I know that in the big scheme of things that 1000 views on Youtube is nothing, but for one of my videos that is really something!!! I must admit that it is the feel good hit of the fall:-) the guys worked out some great harmonies, and Audrey Hepburn is very easy on the eyes:-) I also noticed that the song is popular in Germany! It was posted on a German message board/myspace type page that is popular with women:-) anyway what surprises me is that it is the slide show version of the song that is popular not the actual clip version. Bobby Darin: You Are My Sunshine, Mojo, Splish Splash

I had this posted somewhere in the archive. This is a great clip so I figure if I have it posted twice why not! This has Bobby Darin getting down on piano, and is one of his last performances. Bobby Darin had contacted Rheumatic fever when he was a kid and wasn't expected to live past his teens, but he surprised everyone and thrived. Modern medicine did catch up to him and he did have heart value surgery that did help him. However, he contacted blood poisoning after visiting a dentist. (Today people in his condition take antibiotics when they get dental work) Darin was a performer who believed the show must go on, and instead of getting help for his blood poisoning he played out a string of performances that he had already booked. By the time he finally made it to the doctor it was too late and his heart finally gave out on him at the age of 37. The main reason I am writing this is that unfortunately there some recent misinformation about the death of Bobby Darin. An author (no name no links, he doesn't deserve it) wrote that Darin died of Cocaine Abuse. It just isn't true. Given the poor shape his heart was in Cocaine would have killed him. It is too bad that people don't do the simple research, and just write dumb rumors.

On a positive note, Bobby Darin got a big vote of approval from my elementary art students today!:-) I played a cd of Bobby Darin's music and they loved it! Even the high school kids tolerated it:-)

Rudy Ray Moore RIP

Also from the Bob Corritore blues note, the unfortunate passing of Rudy Ray Moore. I remember watching his hilarious movies like Dolemite! However, Moore was also a singer, and one of the first contemporary rappers. If you ever watched a Rudy Ray Moore film, he always talked in rhyme and he had plenty of lovely ladies to look at!

Best known as being a XXX-comedian, a blaxsploitation film star, and a precursor of rap, Rudy got his start as a blues recording artist, and made a number of great R&B recordings during the 50s and 60s, which would later be reissued on a wonderful collection on the Norton record label. Though Rudy is hard to classify, he always had one foot in the blues, and his beautiful, brash personality will be deeply missed.

Robert Johnson???

If you read Bob Corritore's newsletter you may have noticed the article in Vanity Fair, about the new Robert Johnson photograph. I am skeptical that it is Johnson, (he is the one holding the guitar) I did read most of the article, and it is half way decent. Unfortunately when dealing with Robert Johnson there is way too much fantasy, and political BS. It is hard to tell who owns what, or who owns what to whom.

• Willie “Big Eyes” Smith Arizona Dates This Weekend: Though most famous for being the long-time drummer in the Muddy Waters Blues Band, Willie “Big Eyes” Smith has been making quite a name for himself over the last few years as a singer/harmonica player/frontman. Willie “Big Eyes” Smith's first instrument was harmonica, and he recorded sides behind Bo Diddley and Arthur "Big Boy" Spires during the 1950s. Willie played drums with Muddy Waters through portions of the 60s and 70s. After leaving Muddy's band, he worked for years in an outfit called The Legendary Blues Band, where he began to emerge as a vocalist. In recent years, he has released two straight-ahead Chicago blues records as a harmonica player, fWay Back on the HighTone record label (released in 2006), and most recently Born In Arkansas on the Big Eye label. Willie makes two appearances in Arizona this weekend: Friday, November 7, 2008 at Old Town Artisans in Tucson for Jonathan Holden's Rhythm And Roots Concert Series, and Saturday, November 8, 2008 at the Rhythm Room in Phoenix. Willie brings with him a great Chicago blues band that includes "Little Frank" Krakowski on guitar, Bob Stroger on bass, and Eddie Kobek on drums. The Rhythm Room is located at 1019 E. Indian School Road, Phoenix, AZ 85014. Doors open at 8pm, cover charge is $12. Rack Shack Barbeque will be available at these events. This night will be a patio smoking only event; no indoor smoking will be permitted.
• Robert Lockwood Article in new ABS Magazine: The late great Robert Lockwood, Jr. is remembered in the latest issue of ABS Magazine. The article, written by Jean-Luc Varbes reflects on the life of a man who can arguably be called one of the most influential figures in the blues. The article also uses a wide array of great historic photos, a few of which are from Bob Corritore’s archives. The Lockwood article was part of the magazine's feature on Mississippi down-home blues. • Vanity Fair Possible Photo of Robert Johnson: It’s always wonderful when blues meets mainstream media. Vanity Fair recently posted an article delving into a mysterious photo that some believe to be a recently discovered shot of the rarely photographed Robert Johnson. (Only two confirmed photos of Johnson exist; with this one still having a question mark behind it.) Too bad that Robert Lockwood, Jr. isn’t around to make the final call on this one, but we wonder if anyone checked with Honeyboy Edwards (who also played with Johnson) to verify this. • Electro Fi Releases Harmonica Collection from Hummel Archives: Harmonica ace Mark Hummel has created a niche in the blues world by combining harmonica legends into a series of concerts coined as “blowouts”. The Canadian Electro-Fi label has recently put out a collection of these shows over the years featuring some simply great performances. Mark Hummel’s Harmonica Blowouts Still Here and Gone (EFI-3410) is a two CD set that showcases the very best of Mark’s legendary “Harmonica Blowout” shows recorded live between 1993 – 2007. It features blues artists such as Magic Dick (J. Geils Band), Lee Oskar, Rick Estrin, William Clarke, Paul DeLay, Carey Bell, James Harman, Johnny Dyer, Sam Myers, Lazy Lester, Billy Boy Arnold, and Mark Hummel. Guitarists on this record include Rusty Zinn, Anson Funderburgh, Charles Wheal, and Junior Watson. Thanks, Mark, for sharing these gems with us.

• Midwest Trip Recap - Bob Riedy Reunion, Blues Blast Music Awards, Jazz Record Mart, Obama Rally: Kim and I began our trip by landing in Chicago. We met Chris James and Patrick Rynn at the airport, who had come from San Diego. Since we all had slightly different itineraries, we each rented our own vehicles before heading to Lake Geneva to do a mini-festival celebrating the 30-year anniversary of the Bob Riedy Blues Band. This show would include: original members of the Bob Riedy Blues Band, Jon Hiller, Mark Wydra, and Rick Knapp, as well as guest stars Sam Lay, Eddy Clearwater (a last minute special surprise), Gabe Butterfield (the son of Paul Butterfield), Chris James, Patrick Rynn, Eddie Kobek, and myself. Bob Riedy had arranged it where we would come in a few days earlier to check out the backline and rehearse. My function was both to be the harmonica player with Chris and Patrick, who performed the opening set each night, and to be a Carey Bell fill-in for the Bob Riedy Blues Band. I had many memorable nights watching this band and its special guests at Biddy Mulligan’s in Chicago during the 1970s. Though I had performed many times over the years with Sam Lay, this was my first time working with the legendary Eddy Clearwater. I had been a fan of Eddy’s music for many, many years, and Eddy seemed happy to be able to utilize my harmonica on songs like “Blue Over You”, “Pretty Baby”, "A Good Leavin' Alone", “I’m Ready”, and “Came Up The Hard Way”. We had three wonderful nights of playing and camaraderie on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. Bob Riedy put together a truly memorable gathering, which included a display of rare photos, show posters, and the actual mandolin and guitar of the late Johnny Young (who used to play in the Bob Riedy Blues Band). Chris, Patrick, Eddie Kobek, and myself were very thankful to be included in this special event.

After the gig on Saturday, Kim and I drove to Chicago in preparation for Sunday’s Blues Blast Music Awards at Buddy Guy's Legends. This was the first year of these awards, which promises to be an annual event. Bob Kieser and Ann Caldwell from IllinoisBlues.com ran a very successful, well-organized show that was filled with hospitality. Performers included Magic Slim & The Teardrops, Lurrie Bell, Nick Moss & Gerry Hundt, Tim "Too Slim" Langford (from Too Slim and the Taildraggers), John Németh, Kilborn Alley Blues Band, Eden Brent, Sugar Ray Norcia, Teeny Tucker, and Gina Sicilia and Dave Gross, and the duo of Dave Riley and myself. The winners included The Holmes Brothers - State Of Grace for Best Contemporary Blues Recording, Lurrie Bell - Let's Talk About Love for Best Traditional Blues Recording, Nick Moss - "Mistakes from the Past" for Best Blues Song, Magic Slim & The Teardrops for Best Blues Band, Buddy Guy for Best Male Artist, Koko Taylor for Best Female Artist, John Németh - Magic Touch for Best New Artist Debut Recording, and John Németh for the Sean Costello Rising Star Award. Presenters included James Walker (primary reviewer for Blues Blast Magazine), Ben Cox (also a reviewer for Blues Blast Magazine), August "Lordy" Lord (writer for Chicago Blues Beat), Linda Cain (of Chicago Blues Guide), Eric Steiner (President of the Washington Blues Society), Bev Sites, and Matt Eimer (festival promoter for the Simply Blues Festival in Fort Madison, Iowa). Some of the celebrities in attendance were Ben Cox of Juke Joint Soul, Mark Thompson, Cindy and Cheryl from Chicago Blues Guide, Jerry Del Giudice from Blind Pig Records, Marty Salzman, manager of Magic Slim, Johnny Drummer (with whom I reminisced about seeing him as a featured vocalist with The Aces during the early 1970s), Lonnie Brooks (who I found out was a neighbor and good friend of Dave Riley’s), Kate Moss of Blue Bella Records, Pat Smillie, and others. Though Dave and I did not win in our nominated category, we were thankful for the honor of being part of this great event.

After Sunday night, all my scheduled performances were over; so on Monday, I made it a point to stop by to visit my dear friend and longtime mentor, Bob Koester at his famous record store, the Jazz Record Mart. Bob Koester and I visited for about an hour and a half, as I listened to him tell his pearls of wisdom and stories of his adventures in the music business. I had arranged to also meet Chris and Patrick, Bill Dahl, and Scott Dirks there, making it a great afternoon of story telling and record shopping. That night I took Kim to one of Chicago’s many excellent restaurants, Rhapsody, which was in walking distance of our hotel. The next night was the main reason for our extended stay; to attend the election night Obama rally at Grant Park. Please note that politics is not the focus of our newsletter; but I will say this: aside from my support of Obama, he was the only candidate to buy a full page ad in Living Blues Magazine, and has recently been the subject of numerous blues and R&B songs; also of note were his blues fundraisers at Rosa’s Lounge during his past campaigns. Rolling Stone Magazine reported in a candidate IPod playlist comparison that Barack had included Howlin' Wolf among his favorite music. As we piled into Grant Park, the joy and hopefulness was contagious among the quarter million people who were there. Since we did not have tickets to get up close, we were in an outlying area of the park, where we watched CNN on a Jumbotron (there were a number of screens scattered throughout the park). As we settled into our spot, we realized that we had landed in the exact area that was where at the 2006 Chicago Blues Festival, we had a wonderful backstage conversation with Robert Lockwood, Jr., and Kim and I reflected on this great man and wished he was still alive to see this moment. During the CNN announcements, commentator Roland Martin referenced Chicago Blues, and before Obama’s acceptance speech, one of the songs played was a version of "Sweet Home Chicago". Aside from all of these blues connections, it was great to be back in my hometown and be a part of this amazing moment in American history. We write this newsletter as we wait in the airport on Wednesday morning, ready to head back to Phoenix, after the most satisfying of trips.
