Raccoon River Blues Boys: Thats The Blues To Me

Here is a cool song written and sung by Dennis Cain, called Thats The Blues To Me. It is a tribute to Jimmy Pryor who touched so many lives in Des Moines. I play piano and Dennis is on Guitar.

Tom Gary And Paul Tillotson

Here are a couple of pics of me playing piano with Jazzman Paul Tillotson at the Cherokee Jazz and Blues festival. Paul is a topnotch piano player from New York City who was headlining the show. We jammed on a couple of tunes, one was a boogie woogie that sounded a lot like Albert Ammons and Pete Johnson's Boogie Woogie Dream! If you would like to see more photos you will need to go to the Gathering Places Myspace page HERE. If you have troubles getting in to see them, then you probably need a myspace profile, and add the Gathering Place to your friends list.

Billy Joel: All My Life

Billy Joel has a new song, and a new image. I would like to take credit for creating the new Billy Joel look! About the only difference is he has a pork pie hat, and I have a fedora. Hey Billy! Get a fedora they look much better! Wider rim, cooler look:-) I dig the Goatee. although it is hard to see on Billy since he is turning gray. Nice look, now perhaps some glasses!

Anyway Billy, who was a hero of mine when I was an angry young man, has a new song, and video out, or at least it is new to me!

Tom Gary Blues Band: Iowa

I made this video using film clips from my trusty and cheap digital camera! This is a song about Iowa so the clips are mostly from Storm Lake, and the Buena Vista Campus. I also put my little nephew, and step niece into the video, and if you look closely you will find my hero Jimmy Pryor and his wife Cheryl at the historical building enjoying some music. BTW, the first 40 seconds are of the Storm Lake Municipal Band, playing American The Beautiful! Wait for my song! PLEASE:-)

Mississippi Tourism

I know many think Mississippi is backwards, and I would tend to agree:-) But when it comes to tourism and the blues Mississippi is making money! Clarksdale, and Stoval's plantation have become destinations of European blues fans. The link above gives some more details about the plans for delta tourism. I personally have not made it down south yet, although Hal Reed did invite me down to see some of the old hill people this spring. I unfortunately couldn't get free from school to go, but maybe this summer.

I also found out that I am not the first Tom Gary to play the blues. I was looking at Eric's Blues dates on the Pre-war blues list, and I discovered my name!! I asked for more info on the list and here is what I got

Re: [pre-war-blues] GARRY, TOMMY [GARY] (hca/ADELPHI REC) b. 1910-0228, BROWNSVILLE, TN

Tom Gary (sic: although most Census spellings seem to be aural, anyway) was
enumerated for the 1920 Census at Civil District 9, Haywood County. He was aged
10, suggesting a birthdate in 1909 (the 1920 Census operated as of 1 January
1920).

He was living on Turnpike Road near its intersection with Fulton Road (State
Highway 87). Fulton Road runs west from just near Brownsville, to near the
border of Lauderdale County. The village of Turnpike is on State Highway 54,
just to the south of Fulton Road. Turnpike Road may have been what is now Shady
Rest Road. In that case, the next intersection would be Estes Lane (!).

Hammie Nixon named Tommy Gary as one of the harp players he influenced,
which shouldn¹t be surprising.

This is pretty darn cool. I know I am not related directly to him, but who knows what distance relative that we could share:-)
