I know most people probably search out this video to watch Toto, but really Lucky is the man! I don't know when this was recorded, or where, or why in the world Toto and Lucky Peterson ever crossed paths, but boy was it Toto's lucky day. Lucky is a relatively young man(around 40) and is probably the most underrated blues performer on the planet. Not only can he rock on the guitar, but he smokes on the Hammond B3 as well. Albert King And Stevie Ray Vaungh: Texas Flood
I don't know if I posted this one before or if it is one of the 100 or so that I deleted, but it is good enough to post again:-) This is an awesome video that shows just how great Stevie and Albert were together. I think the way Stevie let the master play guitar and didn't try to show him up was what made Stevie Ray so good. I saw another blues guitarist play with Albert once, and he smoked Albert, and to be honest it made me mad. You need to respect your elders not cut their heads. I have never understood that attitude among musicians, and to be honest real bluesmen don't cut heads. That is what rock guitarist do:-)

Jimi Hendrix: The Star Spangled Banner
This is another clip that was deleted from Youtube that I have found on Dailymotion. This is the historically significant moment at Woodstock when Jimi Hendrix reinterpretated the Star Spangled Banner. This is significant in many ways because the times then were much like now. It didn't matter how patriotic you were, if your politics were against the war then you were unamerican. Jimi loved America, and stated many times that his version was out of love. However, the rightwing of America convinced most people that Hendrix's version of the song was unpatriotic and were able to ban the song from radio. Unfortunately as the years go by many people just assume that Hendrix was some drug addled hippie freak, when in reality he was far from it. In fact he was probably more sober then the majority of people who watched him play. The stories of LSD in his head band were myth, and he didn't OD from heroin or any heavy drugs, but an accidental overdose of sleeping pills. What furthered the tragedy is that because the paramedics thought he was a drug addict they strapped him down in the gurney and he died of asphyxiation of his own vomit. Also many people didn't know that Hendrix was a veteran of the US Army. He was a paratrooper! So here is a guy who really was pretty straight laced, and thanks to right wing myth his life has been totally rewritten into a drug addled hippie freak. All because he was against the war. The Vietnam War! Things never change do they!

People Who Listen To The Blues Are More Likely To Speed In England!!!!
I think this is a put on, but it is pretty funny real or not. According to Saga Motor Insurance People who listen to the blues are more likely to speed than anyone else! They say that 49% of blues listeners with Saga Motor insurance have had speeding tickets. Apparently pop and rock fans were the best drivers! BluzKat Harmonica Jam Workshop and Taylor Hicks Exhibit

Not sure if you are aware of this, but BluzKat will be holding "BluzKat's Harmonica Jam Workshop" to be held on May 10th from 10:00-12:00 at the Alabama Music Hall of Fame located in Tuscumbia, AL.
This workshop has 52 children already registared and will be learning to play "When The Saints Go Marching In" with several lead harmonica instructors from the Birmingham area. After the workshop, everyone in the museum will be invited into the banquet hall to see the kids perform their song along with the instructors in a jam session.
This project is part of the celebration of music and the inspiration of what Taylor has brought to us and to the children. BluzKat will also be celebrating his first birthday on that day and they will be cake and refreshments for all who attend.
There is also an official unveiling of Taylor Hicks's American Idol exhibit which takes place on the same day from 10:00-10:30 am.
Taylor has inspired our feline BluzKat to being an Ambassador of good music to kids of all ages.

Photo Of The Week: Jimmy With His Country Music Friends
Jimmy not only was a great bluesman, but he also played country music. Jimmy started playing country music in the mid 60s. He was influenced to play the blues from Ray Charles, who had recorded some country music during that time. Jimmy loved music so to him it gave him just another opportunity to play live music. He played mostly at the supper clubs located just outside Des Moines on the northside. The Pines was one of his favorite spots, and he recorded one of those shows, which he later released as a CD. He also got his nickname, The "Midnite Cowboy" from his country music fans in Des Moines. He was also inducted in the Iowa Cowboy Hall of Fame.

Bob Dorr And The Blue Band Update
With Public TV fundraising in March and Public Radio fundraising in April, I'm just about all begged out! Still, if it takes begging for you to stop out to the horse track tonight (Friday 4/18) then I'm beggin' ya baby...Prairie Meadows Casino, Altoona IA (suburban Des Moines) The Finish Line Lounge, right after the horse races (about 10pm) until 1am. Get there early for the great buffet, place a wager on the ponies, (always bet on horses with a jocky named Sally, so you can scream RIDE SALLY, RIDE during the stretch run for the finish) and stay around for dancing. It's been two weeks since we've played, I'm REALLY looking forward to it...

I also wanted to let you know that tickets for the KUNI Blues Cruise, June 6 in Dubuque, are now on sale at www.kuniradio.org. This is always one of the most fun events of the year. The boat only holds 300 people. Get your tickets soon. This is currently the only riverboat cruise scheduled for this season...
We have no bookings again next week, (May and June are starting to fill up nicely, tho) so there probably won't be a Blue Note either. The next time we play will be the monthly TGIF party at The Hub, 4th and Main, here in Sparkle City, Friday May 2, 5:30-9:00pm. This will be the final TGIF party until the Fall (which means that it will be the last time that you can smoke cigarettes at that gathering, as Iowa has enacted an indoor smoking ban starting July 1) (I have never been a smoker and generally no longer visit places with clouds of smoke, but the Libertarian in me strongly objects to the government mandating that business owners can't make their own decision as to whether smoking is allowed or not) (ooops, sorry, I know, you don't want me to get started on some Libertarian rant)...
I'm hoping all these April showers DO bring May flowers (how's yer clematis?) and we all have a FABULOUS summer outdoor season (after this past winter we deserve it, don't we?!) Press Release-2008 Iowa Blues Challenge Finals
The Finals for the 2008 Iowa Blues Challenge are now set!
Come join the party at the Hotel Fort Des Moines at 10th & Walnut in Des Moines, Iowa. On Sat., May 17th, 2008, performances will start at 9:00 PM with Avey Brothers, followed by The Soul Searchers and Smokin’ Mojo Kings.
Cover will be $9 for Blues Society members and $10 for non-members. Call 515-243-1161 or 1-800-532-1466 and ask for the Blues fan rate to book rooms.
The competition will be stiff as these three great bands square off to determine who is the best Blues band in Iowa and play for the opportunity to advance to the International Blues Challenge held in Memphis, TN, among other prizes, so come out and support your favorite band!
For the 15th year, the Central Iowa Blues Society, in cooperation with the Mississippi Valley Blues Society and Lizard Creek Blues Society, presents the 2008 Iowa Blues Challenge, an all-Iowa Blues band contest. This contest is open to any Iowa Blues band that has not been nominated for the Blues Music Awards (Handy’s).
The Iowa Blues Challenge features one of the finest prize packages, for a contest of this kind, in the country. Prizes are awarded to the top bands, including---cash, travel expenses, recording time, as well as spots in the Mississippi Valley Blues Festival in Davenport, IA; The Nitefall on the River in Des Moines, IA; 2009 Simply The Blues Fest in Ft. Madison, IA and the International Blues Challenge in Memphis, Tennessee.
