Chordettes: Lollipop
I have been deleting old videos that Youtube no longer has on site. This was one of them. I love the song it was one of those great tunes from the 50s. It also features Andy Williams from Wall Lake Iowa providing the POP! Very Cool!
Photo Of The Week: Gary Smith
This weeks photo is a picture of Gary Smith (dressed in black) taken at the Hull Ave. The Hull Ave in Des Moines advertised itself as Des Moines oldest legal bar. The legend has it that when prohibition was repealed in the 1930s the owner of the Hull Ave were the first to get their liquer license so that in turn made them the oldest bar in Des Moines. Of course other establishments could argue that they had been around longer, but they would be breaking the law if they did:-) In later years the Hull Ave use to have a great blues jam session. Back in 1999 and running to around 2007, every Sunday night was jam night. Originally started by Me and Jimmy Pryor it grew to be a pretty big show. Eventually my good friend Gary Smith took it over and ran it for several years until he became to sick to keep the show running. Unfortunately the Hull Ave is no longer playing blues on the weekend, the last time I was in there it had become a biker bar. Nothing wrong with a Biker bar, because I have played in quite a few, but I do know that the Jam is no longer there on Sunday.
Artist Of The Week: Bobby Darin
Artist of the week is the great performer Bobby Darin. Yup, I know he is not a bluesman, but sometimes I feel like putting someone up here who really inspires me. Bobby played all types of music from Rock and Roll, Swing, Blues, Spirituals, and Soul music. I can remember as a kid watching his TV show and enjoying all of the different music that he and his guests performed. I do believe the reason I played blues is because my parents listened to music from the 40s and 50s, and all different styles of popular music. In fact, it wasn't until I was around 10 or so that I bought my first rock album, (one of those K-TEL top hits LPS) so for my formative years I was listening to some really great music. Bobby Darin was certainly one of those artists. From Mack Then Knife, to Beyond The Sea, I truly enjoyed his songs. Blue Band Update

Pretty much just the facts, mammals...
TONIGHT! (it can't possibly be Friday already, can it?) Jackie and Tim Trpkosh's anniversary party, open to the public, free of charge, at The Dry Dock in Shueyville (suburban Cedar Rapids) 8-midnight. Bunky Marlow makes a rare road appearance with us on saxophone! If you remember The Blue Band at The Showboat or McGlinn's in Cedar Rapids in the early 80s, then you remember Bunky! (I'm not sure Bunky or I remember any details from those dates!) Tim says the best way to get there is to take I-380 to the Swisher exit (just a little south of Cedar Rapids) go east to the first stop sign, which is old Hwy 218, take a left, and the Dry Dock is on that road. BRING CAKE!...
Saturday night (5/10), The Sundown in Williamsburg, 8:30p-12:30a. The food's great, get there early, dance late. The full horn section with Heath and Al will be along for that one! I've played this place about 30 years (no snide remarks about how my career "sure has taken off"!) Children of people that were following The Little Red Rooster Band back when I first played in that place, now have children...
Next Saturday (5/17) I'm really looking forward to playing a brand new place in Waterloo-The Screaming Eagle, at Fourth and Lafayette Streets. We'll be the second band ever to play there! A state of the art sound system and smoke free atmosphere is promised. Bunky & Al will make up the full horn section that night. It should be lots of fun, in what appears to be the new, growing, entertainment district in Waterloo...
The music part of our soon to be released New Year's Eve Reunion 2007 cd is completely finished. The Wizard of Wires/Sultan of Solder/Deacon of Decibels/Knave of Knobs, audio engineer Phil Maass really has outdone himself this time, especially having a 10 piece band on the band stand and saddled with my usual tight fisted (frugal) budget. The BIG band version of some of these old tunes really sounds great. Thanks Phil! This will be a Homemade Hot Fudge release (there's that frugal budget again) We'll have 'em for sale as soon as we can come up with some kind of cover art! We're hoping to have two or three songs posted on the website by early next week and two or three different songs posted on the My Space page as well...
Speaking of frugal...the state of the small-time band business like ours is precarious at best. The summer festival season is usually the only time we can actually make a living at this. This summer's dates were booked 6-8 months ago when gas was selling for about $2.70 a gallon. Couple that with the fact that the equipment truck gets 10 MPG, the festivals are cutting back on what they can pay, and gas likely to be $4 a gallon by Memorial Day, and all of a sudden the summertime profit is sure to evaporate by the 4th of July. Thanks for your generosity at the tip jar, as always, we promise to spend that money only on gas, nothing frivolous like food or rent or clothes...
I finally got all the musty, mildew carpeting out of my basement living quarters this week, and moved my bedroom above ground (did you know that there is a bright ball of fire that burns in the eastern sky between 6-11am?) (I never knew that until this week) My house now looks like some small disaster hit it. It only adds to my recluse mystique. WHAT??...

Set sail with Iowa Public Radio on Friday, June 6 on the mighty Mississippi River for the 2008 Blues Cruise. Join the Friends of KUNI and the Spirit of Dubuque for a three-hour tour with Bob Dorr & the Blue Band.
The Blue Band is celebrating their recent induction into the Iowa Rock ‘n’ Roll Hall of Fame. Led by Iowa Public Radio’s very own Bob Dorr, the Blue Band has acquired a dedicated fan base of all ages and has become one of Iowa’s most revered and requested bands.
The Spirit of Dubuque is a replica of a century-old Mississippi River steamboat with decorative smokestacks, a scalloped canopy over its open-air deck, and Victorian red and gold décor throughout the enclosed dining salon. The gangway and dining area are handicapped accessible for standard wheelchairs.
Boarding begins at 7 p.m. at the 3rd Street Ice Harbor in Dubuque. The Blues Cruise departs at 7:30 p.m. and returns at 10:30 p.m. Drinks and concessions are available and sold separately.
Attendance at the event is limited to 300 guests and tickets are available in advance for $15 per person. Tickets are available for purchase online at www.kuniradio.org or by phone at 1-800-772-2440, ext. 0. Advance tickets are also available at Bob’s Guitars in Cedar Falls and Moondog Music in Dubuque. Tickets purchased at the event are $20 per person.

On Saturday and Sunday, May 17 & 18, 2008 the Soulsville Foundation will once again make history when Otis Redding's family will be our special guests and events participants on two very exciting evenings. The family includes Otis Redding's widow, Mrs. Zelma Redding, along with his three children, Otis III and Dexter Redding and Karla Redding-Andrews.
All will be special guests on Saturday, May 17th at the Stax Music Academy SNAP! After School Spring Concert at the University of Memphis' Michael D. Rose Theater. Otis III and Dexter will perform with the students. All ensembles will be featured during the concert - Stax Music Academy Rhythm Section, StreetCorner Harmonies, Premier Percussionists, and the Soulsville Swing Band, as well as The Soulsville Charter School's Soulsville Symphony Orchestra. Also starring as a speical guest is the academy's Artist in Residence, internationally acclaimed saxophonist Kirk Whalum.
The concert is at 7 p.m. and admission is just $5!
On Sunday, May 18th, the entire Redding family will be our guests for our "Conversations With The Reddings" panel discussion/Q&A, along with others who knew Otis Redding well. This event will take place in the Stax Museum's intimate Studio A.
"Conversations With the Reddings" will take place from 5 - 7 p.m. Admission is $10 general admission and free to Stax Museum members.
This will be Zelma Redding's and Karla Redding-Andrews' first visit to the Stax Museum of American Soul Music.

Back to the streets again! The 8th Almost Annual Kansas City Kansas Street Blues Festival is on for June 27-28, 2008, at its new location: 13th and State Avenue. Festival dates and times are: Friday, June 27th 6-10 p.m.and Saturday, June 28th 12:30-10 p.m. Website www.kckstreetbluesfest.com
We are back - hell or high water! It won't be easy scraping together enough money to pay for this year's festival. But rest assure, we will have the 8th Almost Annual festival. Donations, sponsorships ... are all welcome and can be mailed to 7701 Armstrong Ave. #302, Kansas City, KS 66112 or call me at 913-268-3105 for further information. We have absolutely no monies for advertising, so word of mouth is ever so important. We appreciate very much you passing along this e-mail to all of your music-loving friends!
Enough cannot be said to express the spirit of the artists, fans and staff for why the festival is returning. A special inspiration comes from Linda Shell and KC Kelsey Hill. Without their devotion, the festival would not have a purpose.
We chose Myra Taylor for the "Living Heritage Tribute Show" for the 2007 festival, which we were forced to cancel due to lack of funding. Bless her heart, at 91 years young, Myra Taylor will be the Queen of the 2008 festival!

To kick off Saturday's activities at 12:30, a panel discussion on "Kansas City Blues - Yesterday, Today, and Tomorrow" will feature Jim O'Neal, Lindsay Shannon, Chuck Haddix, Groovy Grant and White Hat Mike Ross.

YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I found the ultra cool, hilarious not safe for tv in 1973 video of Bobby Darin singing Beyond The Sea! I have been looking for this since, well you know what happened. If you missed this clip before it was deleted. Then check it out now! This is the last episode of Bobby Darin's TV show. So he put on a heck of show, typical Bobby Darin to give it all even when he was dying. Darin was a tough guy no doubt about it!
