Just received this from Illinois blues. Fruteland is doing blues in schools in the Quadcities, and will perform in Bettendorf and Davenport Iowa.

Blues Artist Fruteland Jackson to Perform and Teach - Award-winning blues educator Fruteland Jackson will be in Quad-Cities schools and colleges the week of February 4-8 for a Blues in the Schools residency sponsored by the Mississippi Valley Blues Society .
Fruteland will also present two open-to-the-public free performances: Tuesday, Feb. 5—Bettendorf Library, 7 p.m. and Wednesday, Feb. 6—Mojo’s at the River Music Experience in Davenport, 7 p.m.“Fruteland Jackson is a rare blues talent, and we’re lucky to be able to host him again,” says Ann Ring, chair of the MVBS Education Committee. “He’s one of our most-requested artists-in-residence, so we know area teachers and kids are looking forward to his visit.”

I have been looking up and down the Google wire for anything interesting and coming up blank! So I figure a interesting video should hold you over till tomorrow:-)

Evan Palazzo: Up A Lazy River
Here is a cool example of some old time Stride Piano by Evan Palazzo. Stride is probably one of the hardest types of piano playing around because you left hand is bouncing all around and carries the rhythm. Ragtime was the precursor to Stride, and both have influenced the blues and the blues in turn influenced those styles.

Artist Of The Week: Skip James
If you wondered where Robert Johnson picked up his high pitch haunting vocals then listen to Skip James. Skip was one of the lost masters of the blues when he suddenly reappeared at the Newport Jazz Festival in 1966. He came as a friend of Mississippi John Hurt, and the world fell in love with Skip James. James in the short time he had left was able to re-record all of his old songs, and even do a few new ones. The videos below are mostly from Newport Jazz and blues festival, or from overseas TV. As always the videos can be found on the left side of the blog titled artist of the week.

This weeks photo is of the Storm Lake Municipal Band playing at our famous bandshell. The band is made up of local players and every summer they put on free concerts on Sunday afternoons. After a cold winterly week, and winter due to return Tuesday night I thought I would post something warm to remind me of how good summer is on the lake!
Witter Gallery February 24th
I am playing a fundraiser with Don Demers on Sunday February 24th from 2-3;15pm. We are raising money and trying to increase memberships at the Witter Gallery in Storm Lake. Storm Lake is a very nice college town that has some nice small areas of high culture. The Witter is one of those cool places in Strom Lake that has a nice permanent collection as well as traveling art work. Yahoo Group Gone
Well after 6+ years of emails, the demise of my Yahoo Group has come. I could see it happening about a year ago, since fewer and fewer emails were being sent. I also realized that few people were getting the emails, and many were bouncing. I assume that the ever efficient spam filters were probably doing the list in. When I started this blog I assumed that I would use all of these great net tools to promote blues and Iowa Blues artists, but when this blog took off the idea of keeping the email list started to look pretty silly. So it was a slow death, and I don't think anyone noticed it, but after a few warnings of its impending doom. I pulled the plug on it today. So, if you have come over here from the Yahoo group, Welcome!!!! All of the blues news that is fit to print that showed up on the list will be here. Thanks for six great years on the list, and hopefully we can have many more years of fun here on blogger!!!!

Big Gig Alert! Jodi Bodley And Dewey Cantrell
Just got this late email about some friends of mine who are performing in downtown Des Moines tomorrow. They will be playing at the Botanical Center which is a large Geodesic dome located on the eastside of the Des Moines river right of interstate 235. It is a great place to play music in the winter, because it is very warm, and summery!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Plans for Jimmy Rogers Book announced: Though still in the research stages, Dr. Wayne Everett Goins has announced his intentions to author a book that will be titled That's All Right: The Jimmy Rogers Story. Jimmy Rogers is simply one of the greatest blues artists that ever lived, and he, along with Muddy Waters and Little Walter, were architects of the classic Chicago Blues style of the early 1950s. I had heard about this book project last year from Jacque Lane, Jimmy's daughter who had called me to tell me to expect a call from Dr. Goins. The call came this week, and I found Dr. Goins to be a simply wonderful person with a great love for Jimmy's music. I was able to provide him with photos, stories, contacts, and support. He has already compiled a long list of interviews with others who knew and worked with Jimmy, but his work is far from complete. If anyone would be willing to share stories, information, photos or memorabilia on Jimmy Rogers, please contact Dr. Goins as soon as possible. His contact information:

Bill Lupkin at the Rhythm Room this Weekend: Speaking of Jimmy Rogers, one of his former harmonica players, the great Bill Lupkin will be bringing his Chicago Blues Band to the Rhythm Room Friday, January 25, 2008. Bill is a powerful player with two fine releases out on the Blue Bella label. The Rhythm Room is located at 1019 E. Indian School Road, Phoenix, AZ 85014. Doors open at 8pm, cover charge is $8. Rack Shack Barbeque will be available at this event. This night will be a patio smoking only event; no indoor smoking will be permitted.

Bob Corritore to appear at the Spring Harp Fest in San Diego and with Tomcat Courtney at Patrick's II: On Friday, March 21, 2008, Bob Corritore will appear at Patrick's II in San Diego with Tomcat Courtney. This will be a pre-CD Release party for Tomcat's forthcoming CD, Downsville Blues, on Blue Witch Records. Also on the gig will be Chris James and Patrick Rynn from the Rhythm Room All-Stars. Then on Saturday, March 22, 2008 Bob Corritore will appear at the 9th annual Spring Harmonica Festival Benefit at Harry Griffen Park Amphitheater - 9550 Milden St. in La Mesa, California from 11:00 am. - 6:00 pm. Also confirmed to play the festival at this time are The Fremonts, Billy Watson Band, Bob Corritore, Kenny Shoppmeyer and Delta Heat, Dan Byrnes and Friends, Rachelle Danto, Chet and The Committee, The World Famous Unknown Players Jam, and Harmonica John Frazer's All Star Jam Set. Bob will perform with Chris James and Patrick Rynn from the Rhythm Room All-Stars with The Fremonts' Kurt Kalker on drums. Tomcat, 78, now lives in San Diego but is originally from a Downsville, Texas (therefore the name of the title song of the album). - Chico Chism Remembered on Bob's Radio show: It was January 28th, 2007 when the legendary Chico Chism passed away. Chico was Howlin' Wolf's last drummer, and for his last 20 years he was a pinnacle figure in the Phoenix blues scene. With this week marking the one year anniversary of his death, Chico will be remembered with a one hour tribute from 6-7pm on Bob's radio show, Those Lowdown Blues on KJZZ, this Sunday. Listeners may hear Those Lowdown Blues anywhere in the world (real time Sunday nights from 6pm-11pm Phoenix time) via web streaming by clicking here, or on KJZZ in Phoenix at 91.5 FM in Phoenix, Arizona, 89.5 in Cottonwood, 90.1 in Prescott, 98.9 in Tucson, and 99.1 in Kingman. Also thanks to blues wildman Little Victor for dedicating his new EP Blues Shakedown on Witchcraft International Records to Chico's memory. Chico left an indelible mark on so many people's lives.
