Blues Historian Review: Li'L Ronnie and the Grand Dukes, Gotta Strange Feeling

Li'l Ronnie and the Grand Dukes are a classic harmonica blues band out of Virginia.  Ronnie is a great harp player who plays in the best tradition of Chicago bluesmen. However, their song selection is varied, so it is not the shuffle, shuffle, slowblues, that you find from a lot of contemporary harp bands in the Chicago style.  The majority of the songs are original material, which is always a positive thing.  Yet, they do perform a quality jump blues Buzz Me by Louis Jordan that any self respecting Kansas City jump blue band would love to have in their catalog of songs. Furthermore, their Bring Your Love Home, is an original jump blues that screams Kansas City, Texas Jump, or LA Swing take your pick.

The CD is currently available on their website HERE. According to the website it will be available on Amazon and Itunes.  However, I couldn't find the latest release online yet.

Louis Jordan: Friday Night Fish Fry

This is an interesting version of Friday Night Fish Fry.  It is not the original recording.  The person who posted it admits that it is an unreleased version.  What we call a rare live recording in the collecting business.  This version swings a lot better than the original.  It is also in Stereo, which makes me think that it might be a latter reissue.  Some artists from the swing era would re-record their hits with the advance of technology, or the record company would electronically change the recording to stereo.  However listening to it closely I am pretty sure it is re-recording.

MONDAY BY DYNAMO ON I TUNES!!! BY Si Cranstoun!!!!!

OK!  I think I know what is going on here.  Si is releasing his hit single Dynamo on Monday October 11th, and he wants you all to buy it on the 11th.  The idea I think is to get his song noticed out here in the World Wide Web, and perhaps get the music industry interested in Si Cranstoun.  I am not sure if it will work, but I have to admit that Si certainly is channelling the great Jackie Wilson on this song.  Si has a great voice, and his eclectic mix of ska, and jump blues is a nice change up, from the ska crap coming out of Germany right now. (sorry folks, but that stuff is sooooooooooooooooooooooo 1980s:-)  At least Si is doing something original and cool with it daddy O!  Sooooooooo go to I tunes and buy Dynamo on MONDAY October 11th!!!!!!!

Si Cranstoun: Dynamo

Cool clip from one of our favorite English Jumpblues/R&B/Ska performers Si Cranstoun. According to Si this song is a tribute to Jackie Wilson, and you certainly can hear the great Jackie Wilson in this song! Great Job!!!!!

Big Joe Williams, And Count Basie: Going To Chicago

Big Joe is one of those under-rated blues singers. I am not sure how the jazz folks feel about him, but Joe and a lot of the Kansas City style bluesmen, and women, seemed to be less noticed among the blues fans than the more recognized Chicago,Delta, and Memphis blues artists. Big Joe Williams had a smooth voice, and easily moved from jazz to blues. This video is of him and Count Basie performing a song made popular by Count's first vocalist Jimmy "5x5" Rushing, called Going To Chicago.
