The "Stomp" Shines A Light On America’s Secret Musical History with Performances By Ronnie Spector, Roky Erickson, Mary Weiss, Syl Johnson, The Green Fuz, The Mighty Hannibal, Tail Dragger, Travis Wammack, and Many, Many More
In its seven year history, THE PONDEROSA STOMP has grown from "two nights of insane rock roll" into a revered, year-round institution and leading advocate for the great unsung heroes of American Music. The 2008 Stomp will be the biggest and best to date, promising an expertly curated line-up of performers, daytime panel discussions (a Stomp first), and surprises galore.
Bookended, as is tradition, by the two weekends of JAZZFEST, the 2008 Stomp will take place April 29 and 30, on three stages at the HOUSE OF BLUES in New Orleans, with marathon sets that in years past have run from sundown to sunup!
The New York Times has hailed the Ponderosa Stomp as "a dream" that "plunges into the obscure byways of rock's past." Next year's line-up is the Stomp's most eclectic and ambitious to date, with performances ranging from pillars of '60s female pop, RONNIE SPECTOR of the Ronettes and MARY WEISS of the Shangri-Las, to garage rock pioneers THE GREEN FUZ (reuniting for the first time in 40 years!); from soul deep iinnovators THE MIGHTY HANNIBAL, SYL JOHNSON, and THE HI RHYTHM SECTION, to children of the universe ROKY ERICKSON and QUESTION MARK AND THE MYSTERIANS; plus many architects of the New Orleans groove like EDDIE BO, ZIGABOO MODELISTE and WARDELL QUEZERGUE, and so much more (see full confirmed line-up below). As in years past, the 2008 Ponderosa Stomp will be sponsored by THE ROCK AND ROLL HALL OF FAME, The House of Blues, and NEW ORLEANS' FINE HOTELS.
New to the Ponderosa Stomp next year will be the first PONDEROSA STOMP MUSIC CONFERENCE, a full slate of daytime panel discussions and oral histories set for April 29 and 30 at the historic Cabildo on New Orleans' Jackson Square. Featured speakers include Ponderosa Stomp-certified performers EARL PALMER, SONNY BURGESS, BARBARA LYNN, TAMMY LYNN, HAROLD BATISTE, LAZY LESTER, DALE HAWKINS, HAYDEN THOMPSON, JOHN BOUDREAUX, ROY HEAD, ZIGABOO MODELISTE, BOB FRENCH, TRAVIS WAMMACK, JOHNNY ALLAN, and acclaimed authors PETER GURALNICK, HOLLY GEORGE-WARREN, ROBERT GORDON, JIM O'NEAL, JOHN BROVEN, ANDRIA LISLE, MICHAEL HURTT, GEORGE PAULUS, JOHN MORTHLAND, DAVID KUNIAN, BEN SANDMEL, GEORGE MITCHELL, and music biz legends JOE BIHARI (founder of RPM and MODERN RECORDS), and BOB SULLIVAN (original engineer for the LOUISIANA HAYRIDE) among others. The conference is presented by the Ponderosa Stomp Foundation and will be co-sponsored by the ROCK AND ROLL HALL OF FAME and LOUISIANA STATE MUSEUM.
The Ponderosa Stomp Foundation's primary mission is to celebrate the unsung heroes of American music. The Foundation's programs, including the now-famous Ponderosa Stomp, illuminate the indelible cultural footprint left by some of the pioneers of rock roll, soul, country, blues, jazz, reggae, swamp pop and beyond. Many performers have seen their careers revitalized by the Stomp and its ever-expanding list of initiatives. In 2007 alone, the Ponderosa Stomp Foundation sponsored a showcase at the SOUTH BY SOUTHWEST music conference in Austin, drew nearly 5,000 fans to a Stomp-curated show at Brooklyn's MCCARREN PARK POOL, launched a monthly concert series at the OGDEN MUSEUM OF SOUTHERN ART in New Orleans, and created a music-in-the-schools program for children in under-served communities, starting with a partnership with New Orleans' groundbreaking GOOD SHEPHERD SCHOOL.
Tickets to the 2008 Ponderosa Stomp are on sale through Ticketmaster's website (http://www.ticketmaster.com) and the House of Blues box office in New Orleans (225 Decatur St., New Orleans, LA, 70130). Delmark New Blues Releases just in!!-
* Dave Specter, Live in Chicago, on Delmark DVD- 1794 and CD - DE 794, with special guests Jimmy Johnson, Tad Robinson, and Sharon Lewis - www.davespecter.org , www.tadrobinson.com , www.sharonlewisblues.com
- Specter is definitely one of Chicago's best guitarists- blues, jazz, funk, soul.- heavy grooves!! (You like Otis Rush, Kenny Burrell, and early Leo Nocentelli?) Not only do you get Dave's signature heavy instrumentals, the new release has not one or two, but 3 special guests!
The ageless Jimmy "Bar Room Preacher" Johnson and Specter sound so great together- you can tell they really feed off each other's unique styles. Vocalist/harp player Tad "Mr. Blue-Eyed Soul" Robinson is one of the best soul/blues singers anywhere and he and Dave have worked together for years. If you don't already know Sharon "Texas Fire" Lewis, you won't forget her after hearing/seeing her original performances (esp. the moving "Angel") on this fantastic new release- one of Chicago's best female blues singers.
Check out the new Specter Blues DVD trailer on our web page, along with other new ones, including Nicole Mitchell's Black Earth Ensemble!

www.mississippiheat.net , www.lurrie.com , www.carlweathersby.org , www.gilescorey.us
This very underrated Chicago blues band is led by harp innovator/ band leader Pierre LaCocque and dynamic female vocalist Inetta Visor, along with their fantastic new guitarist Giles Corey (check out his guitar and vocals on his spotlight song "Say Something Good!") Chris "Hambone" Cameron on keys (including clavinet) and the ubiquitous all star drummer Kenny Smith. Special guests besides heavies Lurrie Bell (singing a new Chicago Blues anthem "Chicago Is My Home!") and Carl Weathersby ("Hell and Back") are guest vocalist, Devin Thompson (Chicago Catz, Rico), and latin percussionist Ruben Alvarez (Howard Levy's Chevere) and the Chicago Horns (Willie Henderson, Hank Ford, Bill McFarland, and Kenny Anderson) - making for a very full sounding (but not cluttered) blues recording, with some unique twists!

Please send out positive thoughts and prayers for our dear friend, Little Arthur Duncan. Arthur was rushed to the U of I hospital on Chicago's west side this past Friday for emergency surgery to remove a growth on his brain. Not sure about all of the details, but we are hoping/praying for a healthy recovery. He has made some encouraging progress so far..
