Blues On Grand To Close In October!

UPDATE
The Des Moines Register has a story out in both print and online versions of the newspaper.   I am actually quoted in the article, which is both a happy and sad occurrence.  On one hand I like getting interviewed, but it seems it is always about something bad happening to the blues in Des Moines.  To read the article Click HERE.

I have know about this for a few weeks, but I have kept it to myself.  However, since KCCI TV reported the news a few days ago I feel I can share this.  The legendary Des Moines blues club Blues On Grand is closing in October.  It is unfortunate for all since the BOG has been a very important blues stop for a ton of great National, regional, and local musicians.  I have no extra details to share as to why.  Yet, it is obvious that all good things must end, and blues clubs, and blues bands usually don't last very long.  This is a tough business made tougher by a bad economy.  Adding insult to injury is the fact that people don't want to pay for music theses days.  The only way you can make money these days as a blues band is playing gigs, and if their are no gigs you figure out what happens next.

The irony of this economic turndown, is that unlike the great depression which live music thrived, the great recession is killing live music. I wish people would get off their butts and fill the seats to keep the place open, but what can you do.

What I do know is that building has had the blues going on in some form or another since at least the early 70s.  Back when it was Vickies Poor House, Chicago Rick, and Jimmy Pryor played the blues there when they were the only bluesmen left in town.  It became, the Grand Ave Lounge, The Grand, and Blues On Grand, three clubs dedicated to the blues.  One can only hope that the next person in keeps it going, but given the value of that real estate I would think that its future as a blue venue is a long shot.

However, it is too soon to cry about this.  Jeff has two months of kick ass blues lined up.  I am posting what he has coming soon directly from his website.  For more info about the legendary club CLICK HERE

Bernard Allison is the guitar-playing, singing and songwriting son of the late, legendary blues guitarist Luther Allison. True to form for this chip off the old block, the young Allison injects every bit as much energy into his live shows as his late father did.
He joined the tourband of Luther Allison in 1989 after a furious collaboration of 'Father & Son' at the '89 Chicago Blues Festival. Bernard released his first solo album in 1990 and the title was program: 'The Next Generation'. He started touring with his own group all over Europe and released several albums, taking the tradition of blues he grew up with into the new century melting the influences into his own brand.
"It's just a big pleasure for me to continue my father's legacy, but you know I don't go out and try to be Luther Allison. I just go and do what I've learned from my Dad and the likes of Koko Taylor, Stevie Ray Vaughan or Albert King. So, I'm trying to keep the blues alive Bernard Allison style." ~ Bernard Allison

The Grand Marquis are guardians of a musical portal, weaving catchy originals with classy covers. Music meteorologists, if you will, concocting their own brand of weathered styles. It's old-school jump blues, rockabilly and fiery jazz balled up into one big hit of red hot Rhythm 'n' Roll. Once injected, don't be alarmed; you might see through blurry eyes and nicotine haze the ghosts of America's musical past, conjuring delusions of 30s KC, 50s Memphis, Village hangouts, or the jazz jungle of Harlem. Yet these are merely roots from which their music grows; twisting and blending, melding until you catch a glimpse of things to come. Awaken from the intoxicating fog while their songs linger on your ear, echoing the chant of the Blue Devil, and you're sure of one thing: you gotta go back for more.

2009 International Blues Challenge Winner!
Fiery guitarist J.P. Soars and his swinging band the Red Hots took first place in the 25th annual International Blues Challenge, held in Memphis in January 2009, beating out over 160 other contestants from around the world. Soars also individually won the event's Albert King Award, which established him as the best guitar player in the competition. They've recently released their own self-produced album, Back Of My Mind, which features plenty of Soars' incendiary fretwork on a mix of original tunes and inspired covers. Until they secure a label deal, J.P. Soars & the Red Hots remain the best unsigned band in the blues.
Soars is clearly a talented young bluesman with a feel for a variety of blues styles, and has put together an album that showcases many skills -- songwriting, arranging, guitar playing (he also won the Albert King Award for best guitarist, and that shows off nicely here). The CD is "Back of My Mind," and it's a fine showcase for Soars' multiple skills. "Call My Baby." It's original, but could just as easily have been written by Willie Dixon. I like this guy a lot. His vocals have a gritty feel, and both his covers and originals show a strong sense of where the blues have been, and maybe where they're going. As the Albert King Award indicates, he's a strong, tough guitar player with great chops. Give him a listen. I think you'll like what you hear. - By Jim White Pittsburg Gazzette
"The band had a long 90-minute set and it was obvious this guy (JP Soars) is a monster guitar and slide player. Usually when a great player does a long set like that it all starts to sound like the same licks about an hour in the set. Not with this guy. He spent many years touring the world with heavy metal guitars bands before he realized his love for the blues was pulling him toward a new kind of music career. He can play it all, rock, metal, jazz, swing and the blues. Catch this guy as soon as you can before he decides to venture off into another genre of music!" - Bob Keiser, Blues Blast Magazine

Ronnie has gone on to establish himself as one of the most exciting and forward-thinking bluesmen of current generation, pleasing purists with his blues roots while bringing in younger listeners with his blistering guitar work and dynamic stage presence.

When was the last time you saw a three-piece family blues band with two left-handed guitarists? Let alone a blues band with two strong vocals both female and male?
Trampled Under Foot, winners of the 2008 International Blues Challenge, is like no other band you will ever see. Danielle is an amazing blues singer and an excellent bassist. Kris fires right in the pocket on the drums and sings as well. Nick is a strong singer and an accomplished guitarist, winning the 2008 Albert King Award from the IBC.
Trampled Under Foot has been playing music for most of their lives. The product of a musical household, their parents, Lisa Swedlund and the late Robert Schnebelen, were part of a highly noted blues band called "Little Eva & The Works", in Kansas City during the early 1990's. Originally from Kansas City, "TUF" has been touring the Mid-West and the East Coast for the last several years, playing such notable clubs as "The Stone Pony" in New Jersey; "The Bitter End" in New York; and "The Grape Street Pub" in Philadelphia, as well as many notable national blues summer concert events. Trampled Under Foot has been described as a "Rockin' Blues family, spreading their blues experience."

Performing together for more than 20 years, the Pruitt brothers' harmony vocal style sets them apart in the contemporary music scene--leading one reviewer to refer to them as the "Everly Brothers of Blues". David's "big guitar" and Dick's howling vocals over soulful, right-on rhythm playing make this trio a powerhouse.

Some musicians become blues players by choice, some are simply born into it. His recordings—two dozen solo albums for many labels spanning almost 40 years—have become classics, and his live shows continue to amaze fans around the world. Like the great bluesmen before him, Musselwhite has added his own signature to the music. Over the course of his career, he's introduced jazz stylings, Cuban rhythms and a contemporary world-view into his vision of the blues.
Musselwhite's lengthy resume—which, in addition to his solo projects includes guest tracks on recordings by Bonnie Raitt, the Blind Boys of Alabama, John Lee Hooker, Tom Waits and INXS; multiple Blues Music Awards ( W.C. Blues On Grand Goes SMOKE FREE!!!

Just got a hot tip from the Doc on his upcoming extravaganza on June 30th. For most of you who are not aware of Iowa politics, on July 1st Iowa becomes smoke free in public places. Personally, I was OK with the law until I found out that Casino's were exempt. (That tells you who makes the laws in this place) However, Jeff has found a way to "celebrate" the upcoming law change. Here is his press release for the big gig.
PRESS RELEASE

The legendary Blues on Grand is going SMOKE - FREE a day early on Monday, June 30th . On Monday from 6:00pm until 9pm everyone SMOKES FOR FREE. The Blues on Grand cigarette girls will distribute free cigarettes to everyone (twenty-one and over).

In honor of Iowa's statewide smoking ban, music will be provided by DJ Serge (pronounced sir gay) playing your favorite Soviet Union standards. There also will be specials on Stoly and Smirnoff Ice. At 9:00pm, Blues on Grand will officially go non-smoking and have a flag raising ceremony that truly represents the direction our government is heading.

Blues on Grand sends out a special invitation to all Democratic Senators, Representatives, Governor Culver AND Mrs. Culver (upon presentation of proper papers of course) in appreciation for them looking our for us.

All smokers get down to the mighty BOG and enjoy your last smokes before your favorite smoky blues joint goes non-smoking! Jeff is wild and crazy, so if he is given out free smokes, (and trust me Jeff giving out anything free is certainly something that doesn't happen every day!) take him up on the free cigarettes!!! I mean this is a guy who charges for WATER!!!! So take advantage of the situation:-)

Ron Thompson To Perform At Blues On Grand In Des Moines

Press release for the upcoming Ron Thompson Show at the mighty BOG

RHYTHM AND BLUES LEGEND
RON THOMPSON
TO PERFORM IN DES MOINES!

Nationally acclaimed rhythm and blues legend Ron Thompson and his band The Resistors will appear at Blues on Grand on Friday, June 6th, at 9:30 PM. Blues on Grand is located at 1501 Grand Avenue, Des Moines. For more information, call 515.244.3092.

Ron Thompson was honored last fall by the City of San Francisco for his decades of musical contributions to the community and to the world at large. A few days after Barry Bonds got "his day" in The City for breaking the all-time baseball home run record, San Francisco celebrated its own musical home run king, Ron Thompson. By official proclamation of Mayor Gavin Newsom, September 5, 2007, was declared Ron Thompson Day in San Francisco.

Just recently, Thompson was also honored by the City of San Jose during its week-long San Jose Blues Week. Thompson was formally presented with the award by Mayor Chuck Reed during the Metro Fountain Blues Festival on May 10th.

Ron Thompson is a celebrated guitarist and vocalist who was nominated for a Grammy for his album “Resistor Twister.” Thompson has received countless awards and accolades, including Real Blues magazine’s Best Live West Coast Blues Act, Best West Coast Blues Slide Guitarist, and Best West Coast Blues Guitarist/Modern.

Besides touring as band leader with John Lee Hooker for seven years, Thompson has played with Big Mama Thornton, Sonny Rhodes, Luther Tucker, Jimmy McCracklin, Pee Wee Crayton, Carla Thomas, Percy Mayfield, Etta James, B.B. King, Jimmy Reed, Booker T. Jones, and countless others.

Tom Mazzolini, founder and producer of the San Francisco Blues Festival, the longest running blues festival in the United States, said, I’ve always felt Ron is the most talented blues guitarist I’ve ever seen. He can do it all. He’s extraordinarily gifted. What many folks aren’t aware of is that Ron was a huge asset in the re-emergence of John Lee Hooker—he was the foundation for that boogie sound.”

Thompson performed extensively in 2007, including a summer tour with Chris Isaak; two shows with Bruce Willis; a week on the Legendary Rhythm and Blues Cruise last October with such musical VIPs as Taj Mahal and Elvin Bishop; and he headlined a number of festivals throughout the nation as well.

Thompson headlined the 40th Anniversary of the Summer of Love Concert in Golden Gate Park last September, sharing the bill with legends such as Jefferson Starship, Canned Heat, Jesse Colin Young, and many others. A two hour documentary of the concert, which began with Thompson's sizzling performance, was aired in the San Francisco Bay Area recently, and will soon be nationally syndicated.

Ron is headlining several blues festivals around the nation in 2008, and will be performing in Des Moines as part of his Summer Midwest Tour. Thompson will be touring Europe in Fall 2008.

Photo Of The Week: Chicago Rick Lussie And Jimmy Pryor

This weeks photo is of two of my heroes Chicago Rick Lussie, and Jimmy The Midnite Cowboy Pryor. These two guys were the only ones playing real blues music in Des Moines in the 1970s. While other bands were playing soul, funk, and disco, Rick and Jimmy were still playing the blues. Granted they didn't play a whole lot since there weren't a lot of gigs, but they keep the blues alive. Both Rick and Jimmy used to tell me stories about playing Vickie's Poor House where the current Blues On Grand is located. Vickie was quite the charactor, and used to give free drinks to guys who had just got out of jail! Needless to say it was a wild place. This photo was taken many years later at the opening of The Grand. The Grand was the second attempt at a blues bar at that location. The First was The Grand Avenue Lounge.

Hard Times For Musicans

Michael Swanger, a good friend of mine, and writer for Cityview, a Des Moines independent newspaper, has an article about the tough times faced by musicians, and clubs. (CLICK HERE) I think perhaps the most sobering part of the article dealt with Des Moines beloved blues club Blues On Grand.

Locally, we said goodbye to Hairy Mary’s last month, a stalwart of the local punk and rock scene for more than a decade. The Lighthouse Coffeehouse, a leading folk music venue will close its doors at the end of the year. And now we hear from the manager that Blues on Grand, Des Moines’ only blues bar in a town full of blues fans, might soon close.
This is not good news at all. Blue On Grand is not only important for the quality of life in Des Moines, and for local blues fans, but also for national touring acts who look at Des Moines as one of the dependable stops on the tour. As I have always said support your local blues band, and blues bar owners, because once they are gone, it maybe a long time before you see anything like them again.

What A Friday Night: The Saga Of The Grand Piano Bistro

I got into Des Moines early enough to check out the nightlife, and I wanted to see the new hot spot, The Grand Piano Bistro! I decided to ditch my bluesman attire for more urban professional clothes, a very nice, (and I mean Very Nice) BVU Athletics polo shirt, and matching BV cap! I must say that my disguise was very appropriate for this new hang out of the late 20s early 40s, I am too old for the meat market, but I want to been seen at location!! However, the door man must have sensed that I was not one of the trendy types when I was informed that he needed five dollars, an ID, and I couldn't go in because it was crowded!! Hmmmmmmmmmmm, what is this New York???? Studio 57???? However, your intrepid reporter was undaunted and I decided to watch the show from the large picture window outside the bar! I am pleased to report that I am glad I saved my five dollars. A couple of hammy piano players acting out for a bunch of drunken drinking like I'm 20, but I am really 40 crowd! I think the highlight of the show (or in this case lowlight) was when they did a dueling piano version of American Pie WITH AUDIENCE PARTICIPATION!! (really only Don McClain can get away with performing that song and making it work, any one else is just a parody) Needless to say I decided to move on to greener pastures and worked my way west to the legendary Blues On Grand.

I arrived at Blues On Grand in time to see former Australian now living in Michigan Harp player Harper. I don't know his last name, he goes by Harper, but his name is well deserved. This guy makes some of the strangest noises on that harp that I have heard, and I have had the pleasure of playing with some of the best in Kansas City. They didn't do some of the stuff this guy does. It is hard to explain. I almost think that he was humming and blowing at the same time to create these weird kind of glissando that bend way to smooth for a harp player. It is possible that it is something he learned from playing the indigenous instrument from Australia pictured above. He played a song with that and it was a very cool low sounding instrument that had some weird enharmonic going on. It is very much like the intro to the Globe Tracker series on Travel TV, or IPTV. Harper also can sing. He can sing in a straight blues style, but also can sing in a bass register, while his guitarist sing tenor that has a jazzy feel like the old Climax Blues Band. So it was a great night regardless of its start, and the BOG delivered as usual. If you want good music without the trendy drunks go get the blues at the BOG.

Matt Woods And The Thunderbolts

These guys are unoffically the best blues band in Iowa! They won the Iowa Blues Challenge put on by the Central Iowa Blues, Mississippi Valley Blues , and Linn County Blues Societies. These guys are also good friends of mine. I briefly had a band with Scott Cochran, and Michael Swanger, with Jeff Baker on guitar as we backed the legendary Jimmy Pryor. Matt Woods came on to the Des Moines scene about the time I was leaving, but him and his friends put on a killer set on the very last Iowa Blues Showcase! Here is Matt and the guys doing a little nasty slide thing.

Des Moines Arts Festival

While the Des Moines Art Festival is not a blues festival, it is a huge gathering of visual and performing artists. Also, it has a few good blues bands as well:-) The pre fest started tonight at Blues On Grand with a live radio broadcast of one of the hottest blues performers in the US, Watermelon Slim! I must admit that I missed that one, and should have posted about it, since they streamed the show live on the internet on KUNI. Anyway, people in the upper Midwest should try to catch this fest. BTW, the fest winds up with the Iowa Blues Hall Of Fame induction at Blues On Grand! So the might BOG starts and ends the fest!!!

Photo Of The Week Blues On Grand

Probably one of the most important nights in Des Moines blues history was the reopening of Blues On Grand. The club had been known under many different names. Vicky's Poorhouse was one of the more notorious clubs located in that spot. Vicky was the type of bar owner who if you got out of jail you got a free drink:-) Jimmy Pryor, and Chicago Rick remembered playing at the club back in the bad old days when Vicky owned the club. next door to Vicky's was a county music bar, and another dive was across the street at 15th and Grand Ave. Not exactly an hot spot in Des Moines, but it was about an 1/2 mile south of the fabled Center Street. In the early 90s it became the Grand Ave Lounge, and was home to local blues. Thursday Nights became jam night, and usually brought in the biggest crowd of the week. Eventually Jerry Glenn, former president of the Central Iowa Blues Society bought the place and called it The Grand. Jerry bought in national and regional acts on the weekend, and the blues jam on Thursdays. He experimented with locals during the rest of the week, but crowds were small, except on Thurs-Sat. However, Jerry ran out of money and the club was forced to close. However, another former president of the Central Iowa Blues Society, Jeff "Dr. Doubt" Wagner took over, renamed it Blues On Grand, and the rest is history. I suppose the saying third time is a charm is probably right since Jeff has keep the place rocking ever since. Check out their webpage here.
