South Skunk Blues Soceity

But before that I want to let everyone know what we have been up to.
I had a chance this week to talk with Fruitland Jackson about Blues in the Schools and he is planning to spend the week of February 1, 2013 here in Skunkland. I am beginning to work on a schedule, funding and support for this great Blues educator to come.  If you would like to help with this effort please let me know.  Last years Blues in the Schools was well received.  We plan for Fruitland to begin the week with the Blues Under the Blue Roof at the Newton Library.  Here are a couple links that you might find interesting regarding this fine musician and educator, look around on his website and you will find lots of background information:  http://www.fruteland.com/   Here is an introduction to Fruitlands Blues in the Schools:  http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=7FDB8unA720

Here is a list of upcoming shows. Come on out and get some Blues relief.  Great musicians and great cultural and social activity.  You know we are really fortunate to have such a artistic and cultural vibe going in Skunkland!  It is like the “big city”.  We must nourish it or it may not continue!  Support the scene, live music here is a blessing.  Also please check out the attached posters (we are also blessed to have some talented graphic artists in our midst, thank you Elaine and Chris):

South Skunk Blues Society Update

Meeting Monday Oct. 1st: On another note we will be having a South Skunk meeting this coming Monday October 1st at the Newton VFW at 6:30 PM.  We will be discussing the need to find a replacement for our Treasurer Jennifer Howell.  Jennifer has experienced major computer problems and as a result finds she must resign.  We are now in the process of recruiting a replacement for this position on the Board so if you are interested in joining our efforts in this capacity please let me know.  Jennifer has been our Treasurer for several years and will be missed in this role. She has indicated she will continue on as a volunteer helping with our merchandise table at the Bowl.  Thanks allot Jennifer for all you have done to keep the Blues alive here in Skunkland.  Also at Mondays meeting we will be discussing upcoming plans for the fall and winter activities (shows, Blues under Blue Roof, Blues in the Schools...  If you have some time Monday evening please come on over to the VFW and lend some input.  I am going to add the membership form to this email so that if you know of some one that is due for renewal or you think might want to join you can share with them.  Membership in the South Skunk Blues Society makes a great Halloween gift.

Happy Birthday South Skunk Blues Society: This Sunday is the 20th birthday of the South Skunk Blues Society.  Thinking back over these past years I got to reminiscing so I decided to bring back some more blasts from the past so to speak.  So I decided to send some  photos of posters from our history.  I am attaching the Honeyboy Turner Show poster from back at the Terrace in 1995. We have been using the Showprint posters since the beginning of the South Skunk Blues Society. I also have attached a photo of the very first South Skunk show poster:  Randy Vincent and Prime Cut, back on November 27 and 28 1992.  I wonder who all that is reading this was at that show.  If you have some memories of the Skunks first 20 years and want to share them send me an email and I will send it out in my next update.  Well I am getting nostalgic so when I got to looking I found a poster from the 1st Bowlful of Blues...It is hard to stop when I get to looking back at our history.   And then I found one for “The Janey’s...  I could go on but I thought since Bryce Janey is going to come play for us next Friday at the Speakeasy and his dad, Billie Lee Janey is going to be inducted into the Iowa Blues Hall of Fame in a couple weeks I should include a copy of that old poster.  So time flies when you got the blues and now we are 20 years old; that’s nearly legal (which incidentally will be our theme for the next year).  Thanks to Elaine Mattingly for coming up with such a catchy theme.

Upcoming Shows:
October 2:  Dorian Michael, 6:30 PM,   Newton Public Library  This Tuesday evening concert is free and open to the public.  Refreshments will  be provided by the Friends of the Newton Public Library.

South Skunk Blues Society Update

Hi, South Skunk became a non profit corporation in the State of Iowa on September 30, 1992.  We are going to be 20 years old in five days.  This milestone is remarkable in so many ways.  We have kept the blues alive all this time.  When I was talking to Harvey Brindle from Honeyboy Turner Band last week up at Cadillac Jacks he recalled playing for the South Skunk out at the Terrace Inn years ago.  He sent me copies of the poster we had for their show and also a flyer that we had.  Take a look, a blast from the past.  Incidentally they are still a great band with a great sound!

Gosh and we continue to have many opportunities to get out and listen to some great music.  Please come out and take advantage of this.  And support the venues that are bringing this to Skunkland.  Honeyboy Turner put on a great show last Saturday up at Cadillac Jacks and maybe sometime we can get them to come back again.  This is an updated listing of upcoming shows:

We are still working on putting together an order for some 2012 festival shirts.  X and 2X shirts are what we are thinking.  They would be about $20 plus tax.  Let me know if you are interested.  Think we have four people that want to get a shirt.

While I am writing about the Bowl I want to point you to a very nice slide show of the Bowlful of Blues on the Newton Daily News website:  http://www.newtondailynews.com/  If you scroll down about 1/2 way you will come to a section of videos and photos and when you click on the “Bowlful of Blues Double Hit of Great Music” and you get to see the slide show.

Also wanted to keep everyone up to speed on the upcoming shows.

This coming weekend you can enjoy some great blues music both Friday and Saturday.  Dave Zollo will be appearing at the Speakeasy this Friday 9/21 beginning at 8PM (he is an extraordinary Iowa musician).  Come on over and set back and listen to him play the key board and sing some really cool songs.  He is great.  Check out this interview with Dave earlier this year:    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8b0yjCFRSTk&feature=related   Here are some links to his music - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DJrz9JuLuZg&feature=related

Ron Cooper tells me many believe that this day may very well be the end of the world (at least as we know it now).  The Mayan calendar ends on this date!  Is this the dawning of the Age of Aquarius or is it the end.  Well one thing for sure, Matt Woods and the Thunderbolts and Lil Ed and the Blues Imperials will help us make it through the night.

South Skunk Blues Soceity Update

First I want to thank everyone who have helped us to keep the Blues alive here in Skunkland.  We estimate over 1,000 people total attendance at the two day 20th annual Bowlful of Blues.  The music was great and it was a success!    I have updated the list of people we thank for making this possible (see attachment)!  If I have missed anyone please let me know.  When you look over the list of all that have made the Year of the Skunk and the Bowl a success this year you can see how many people have lent a hand!  It is quite a large group!  Thanks!

In October and November the South Skunk Blues Society will be meeting at the VFW in Newton on the 1st Mondays (10/1 &11/5) at 6:30 PM.  Please feel consider coming to our meetings and seeing if you might be able to lend a hand to our efforts as a volunteer!  We will soon begin planning for the Blues in the Schools, Blues Under the Blue Roof and next years Bowlful of Blues!  We will be having elections for board officers coming up in a few months and would appreciate having some folks come forth and offer to lend us a hand.

Membership Drive Continues:
First I want to say thanks for your support welcome to our new members and those that have renewed their memberships!  I will be sending out a reminder email to those who’s renewal is coming due or are past due.  If you know you are past due or know someone who you think might want to join the Skunk please take a look at the membership form.  Fill it out if you know you are past due or forward it on to a friend to complete.  It is our members that keep this volunteer based non profit organization going.

Is there anyone out there who is interested in buying a 20th annual Bowlful shirt.  We have a few left over and have been asked to see what if would cost to get some larger (2X shirts...) on a limited special order basis (we sold out early on the larger shirts).  If you are interested send me an email and let me know.  We will be determining the cost of these shirts in the very near future.

What is next?  We have added some shows to the list of Blues that is coming to our area!  Come on out to see and listen to some great music and enjoy the company of others.  Support the venues that are bringing Blues music to our area!  Remember that, if in doubt, please check with the venue before driving a distance.  Schedules sometimes change and it is tough to keep up on these sometimes.

Bowlful of Blues September 1st and 2nd 2012

Hey everyone.  Bowlful of Blues is going on Saturday and Sunday in Newton Iowa.  This is a great event for everyone.  Newton is easy to get to.  It is located about 40 mile east of Des Moines Iowa, on Interstate 80.  If you live in Minneapolis, Chicago, Kansas City, or Omaha it is a quick trip down the interstate.  This is a great show with a lot of Iowa hospitality.  You need to get your face in the place and say hello to the best blues society in the land, the South Skunk Blue Society!

Below is some more info from the Skunkers

I thought I would send out a bit more information before the Bowl comes around this weekend.  We will be opening the gates at 11 on Saturday and 11:30 on Sunday.

Matt Woods and the Thunderbolts:
Since my last email I saw Matt Woods performance that won him the single/duo Iowa Blues Challenge winner this past Sunday. Then I learned Scott Cochran, bass player for Matt Woods and the Thunderbolts was selected for induction into the Iowa Blues Hall of Fame in 2012.  And with some degree of sadness I learned today that Matt Woods and the Thunderbolts is beginning their “Back Out Tour”.  This tour leads up to their  "indefinite hiatus" at the end of the year.  They have graced the stage at the Bowl several times through the years and folks will have an opportunity to see one of their few last engagements this Saturday at the Bowl.  I have attached a release that has details of this decision to go on hiatus and their “Back Out Tour” schedule.   This band will be missed!

Bob Pace:
I learned Bob Pace, who will perform at the Bowl both Saturday and Sunday backing up Iowa Blues Hall of Famer Joanne Jackson, was selected to be inducted into the Iowa Blues Hall of Fame in 2012.

Blues Hall of Fame:
Put Oct 13 on your calendar NOW!!   The 2012 Iowa Blues Hall of Fame induction ceremony will be held at the Downtown Marriott at 7 PM.Central Iowa Blues Society is planning an Iowa Blues Hall of Fame induction and also will raise funds for the Blues Music Hall of Fame to be built in Memphis, TN.

The Iowa Blues Hall of Fame mission is to recognize and honor our Iowa Blues heritage. They will induct 4 performers and one non-performer this year to the Iowa Blues Hall of Fame. Inductees are:
*Bob Pace (See him both Saturday and Sunday)  Bob is so good!
*BillyLee Janey (this is Bryce Janey’s father- you will see Bryce at the Bowl Sunday)
*Gary Gibson (Gary has played the Speakeasy several times in the past year and is scheduled to appear again 10/26)
*Scott Cochran (noted earlier in this email he will be appearing with Matt Woods and the Thunderbolts Saturday at the Bowl)
*Jim DeKoster (non-performer).

20th Annual Bowlful of Blues:
This Saturday at Maytag Park in Newton. It is all comin’ together for the Year of the Skunk. This will be one show to remember.  Advance ticket sales are brisk.  Talk about diversity in music, the root of it all goes back to America’s music soul; the Blues. You will hear Blues played in the rock and roll vein, the piedmont way, the Mississippi sound will be present and accounted for, the jazz way, your R&B longings will be recalled and the Gospel music will stir your soul!  Join the party and have some fun.  Gates open at 11 on Saturday and 11:30 on Sunday.  The afterfest party and jam will be held Saturday night beginning around 10 PM (hosted by the Candy Makers) at the Newton VFW which is located at 315 1st Ave W. The Mens Auxillary of the VFW will be serving breakfast for $3.00 a plate (for as long as the food lasts). Also just a reminder not to drink and drive.   Again this year the Silver Cab Company will give you a ride for free (but please tip your driver).  Look for more information about this in the Bowl program.    See the attached Bowlful of Blues schedule and poster.

Parking area has changed:  Public parking will not be available in the lot by the Bowl as it is being used for parking for individuals with handicaps, volunteers, vendors, cycles etc. Be forewarned!  The cooler and lawn chair drop-off, the pedestrian admission gate to the Bowlful of Blues, access to this designated parking area is just inside the Maytag park gate.  There will be signs. Turn left at the 2nd drive into the parking lot.  This will allow you to enter the turnaround for the drop off, walk to the Bowlful admission gate, or enter the Handicap, volunteer, vendor and cycle parking area.  The entire parking area will be fenced off.

And lastly please thank and support our corporate sponsors!!!  If not for them, we could not keep the blues alive.  Their support is essential:
