Hey Blues Fans,

So much Blues, so little time! We hope you get the chance to get to some Blues festivals this summer. While the economy is in a mess, the business of the Blues rolls on and even seems to thrive in bad times.

Speaking of great festivals we are headed to Urbana, Illinois this weekend to see the Urbana Blues Brews and BBQ festival. This is only the second year for this festival from the folks at Fluid Events but somehow they have figured out how to provide a GREAT lineup and still make the festival FREE. Now that is a great thing in the current hard times.

Their lineup includes the Delta Kings, The Kinsey Report and slide master Sonny Landreth on Friday with the Impalas, Gina Sicilia, Bob Margolin, Eddy The Chief Clearwater, Pinetop Perkins and The Willie "Big Eyes" Smith Band and Buckwheat Zydeco on Saturday. A priceless line up all for FREE!

For more information see their ad below or CLICK HERE to visit their website.

There is also a great festival this Saturday in the little town of Slater, Missouri. The Bear Creek Blues Festival features Smokin' Joe Kubek & Bnois King, Howard & The White Boys, King King, The Meagan Boyer Band, Rich Berry, the Joe Lewis Band and Fletchers One Man Blues Band. See their ad below and visit their website for tickets and info at www.bearcreekblues.com.

Blues Wanderings

We made it to Blues On the Fox last weekend in Aurora, Illinois. The fest is literally held on top of the Fox river. Fans sit on the bridge across the river smack dab in the middle of downtown Aurora. It featured a lineup that included, Big James & the Chicago Playboys and Davy Knowles & Back Door Slam on Friday and The Hix Brothers, Henry Butler, Cedric Burnside & Lightnin’ Malcolm, Sugar Blue, Watermelon Slim & the Workers and Los Lobos. Below are a few pics of the fun including British Blues guitar sensation Davey Knowles, Lightnin' Malcom and Watermelon Slim

.

We will a complete review of the festival in next weeks issue with pictures of all the Blues fun!

In this issue - Blues Reviews and MORE!

James Walker reviews a new CD from Michael Packer. Mike O'Cull reviews a new CD by Buckwheat Zydeco. Michael Packer reviews a new CD by Greg Nagy. Eric Steiner reviews a new CD by The Chicago Kingsnakes.

Michael Packer - Rikers Island Blues

Iris Music Group

www.michaelpackerbluesband.com

8 songs; Time 42:36; Splendid

Styles: Modern Electric Blues

What is an optimist? An optimist is a person who has been sentenced to prison, and on the way there, he/she says, “At least I’ll gain a deeper understanding of the Blues!”

Blues and jail have always seemed to co-exist, even spawning some great works like BB King at Cook County Jail or Johnny Cash at Folsom Prison. In Michael Packer’s case, his one year stint in stir at Rikers Island, New York, gave him both a chance to learn, and perform. Packer did three or four concerts with his in-house band while serving a year there for armed robbery.

“Rikers Island Blues” was not recorded at the famous New York gray-bar-hotel as one might infer from the name. Since there is no mention in the liner notes where it was recorded, I am unsure. The first song seems to be a studio song, and the remaining seven tracks are recorded live, somewhere. Track three, “I’m Tore Down,” is announced at Sweet Rhythm, a famous jazz club in Greenwich Village in New York City. The exact recording date is also unclear.

Altogether, the eight song set is some enjoyable real-deal Blues. The opening track may be an original (again, scant liner notes), but the remaining seven live tracks are mostly well chosen covers like “The Thrill Is Gone” and “I’m Tore Down.” While one can imagine Packer’s vocals being stronger as a young man, he commands plenty of respect from his fellow all-star musicians, who are loose and in the groove. The biographical shuffle “Born in New York City” was written by Packer, and it features Felix Cabrera’s deft honking on harp.

The live songs feature Michael Packer on guitar and vocals, James Cotton's piano player David Maxwell, Guitarist Jimmy Vivino from the Conan O'Brien show, Lou Marini from the Blues Brothers and Saturday Night live, Cuban born harmonica ace Felix Cabrera, Ed Jackson on bongos, King Bear on bass and Nat Seeley on drums.

Packer is a singer, songwriter and guitarist who was born in New York City in 1950. In 1969 he formed the group “Papa Nebo” which included saxophonist Bob Mintzer. Papa Nebo recorded an album for Atlantic records after they were personally signed by Ahmet Ertegun.

Eventually Packer started another project “Free Beer” which recorded three albums for Buddha and RCA records and toured extensively with the likes of the Atlanta Rhythm Section, Dr. Hook, and Clifton Chenier to name a few. All of the albums made the Billboard top 100.
After dropping out of the music scene in the late 80s, Packer hit the skids. His drinking had escalated, and he found himself living on the streets. He did a year in Rikers Island for attempted robbery, but that seemed to be the turning point in his life. Even in prison he had a band. HBO did a special "The Prisoners of Rikers Island” in which he appears.

Michael Packer has been sober 15 years now, and life is good especially his music. He has become a well known and respected member of the New York City Blues Scene. The Michael Packer Blues Band has received rave reviews for the “Live at Sweet Rhythm” album (Woodstock Records). A Best of Michael Packer has been released and also reissues of his earlier recordings of Papa Nebo and Free Beer.

In 2009 Michael Packer and percussionist Ed Jackson were semi-finalists in the solo/duo competition at the International Blues Challenge in Memphis.

Michael Packer has lived the blues, and now, he is back playing the blues with style.

Greg Nagy - Walk That Fine Thin Line

Big O Records

www.myspace.com/gregnagyband

'Walk That Fine Line' is the debut album from Michigan's guitarist-vocalist-songwriter Greg Nagy. Nagy is also the guitarist in the popular blues band Root Doctor.

The title cut 'Walk That Fine Thin Line', features some tasty guitar work and soulful vocals from Nagy on this very commercial sounding track. 'For The Love Of A Woman' is an upbeat blues piece with some nice harmonies by the background singers and the band is in the pocket. 'Blues Will Take Good Care Of You' is a jamming track that could also make some contemporary jazz radio playlists.

Nagy comes down home with the funky 'Won't Cry' (a little short but so cool I had to listen again).'M&O Blues' is a walking blues with a tremolo sounding guitar giving the tune a nice effect.

'Sunrise' is another contemporary commercial track with great harmonies and excellent piano work by Al Hill. 'You Can Love Yourself' is a blues tune with a nifty hook. Nagy laments about love on the slow blues 'Not Falling In Love'. He brings us back with a rockabilly blues on 'Jenny, Jenny, Jenny'. The album ends with the Otis Redding like 'She's My Baby'.

Greg Nagy is truly an accomplished guitar player. He knows when to show his stuff and when not to. A lot of guitar players I have listened to seem to play all they know in each solo, so it's like, yeah, your fast but once you hear one cut you've heard it all. Not the case with Greg Nagy and he was a pleasure to listen to.

My favorite tracks are the title cut 'Walk That Fine Thin Line' and 'Wont Cry' but the whole CD is good and very radio friendly. I am sure blues radio promoter Todd Glazer up there in Alaska won't have any problem getting Greg Nagy some airplay...EXCELLENT RECORD!

Buckwheat Zydeco - Lay Your Burden Down

Alligator Records

www.buckwheatzydeco.com

Buckwheat Zydeco (aka Stanley Dural) leads the hottest zydeco band around and is a bona fide American music legend. He is the preeminent ambassador of Louisiana zydeco music and is celebrating 30 years in the business with his first release on Alligator Records Lay Your Burden Down.

This latest effort is the most ambitious, varied, and deepest of BZ’s career and shows his vocal, accordion, and organ skills in as good a light as they have ever been seen. The album also features five new Buckwheat originals along with some reinterpretations of songs fans might not expect him and the band to tackle. The album opens with “When The Levee Breaks”, which classic rocks fans associate with Led Zeppelin but really dates back to Memphis Minnie. The track moves from a blues lament to a two-step, giving it an almost ‘jazz funeral’ vibe.

Another successful cover is BZ’s reading of “Let Your Yeah Be Yeah” by Jimmy Cliff, which is sweet and soulful. Other writers covered here include Captain Beefheart, Bruce Springsteen, Warren Haynes, and J.J. Grey. Special guests performing on the CD are Haynes, Sonny Landreth, and Trombone Shorty.

Lay Your Burden Down, produced by Steve Berlin of Los Lobos who also plays on the disc, pushes the boundaries of zydeco/roots music in a positive way and shows how much commonality there really is amongst the American musical styles. This is the way the old-school music we all love is going to survive and flourish in the 21st century: by bringing new elements into it, which turns new fans on to it, and making everyone realize that, no matter what type of music it is, a master like Buckwheat can transform all of it into pure bayou soul.

It may have been 30 years in the making, but Buckwheat Zydeco has turned in the record of his life and it will be fun watching this music make its way around the world.

Live Blues Music Review

The 26th Chicago Blues Fest - Day One June 12,2009

The 26th edition of the Chicago Blues Fest took place as usual in the heart of the city, Grant Park. With more than 70 artists on five stages, this is a very large festival. Last year on the 25th anniversary there were seven stages and more that 110 artists so this fest was a bit more manageable to cover. There was actually time to enjoy some of these artists as you worked your way from stage to stage to photograph the artists.

On Friday the festival started off at noon with tour de force of Blues in the schools. Several groups representing various Chicago public schools performed with Bluesman Carl Weathersby playing guitar for the groups. It was great to see so many kids singing and playing harmonica. The Blues is alive and well in the Windy City.

There were a number of great Blues performers on Friday. We got to see Gloria Thompson Rogers, The Blues Experience with Vince Agwada and Chicago singer Mary Lane in the early afternoon

Donna Herula is a Chicago dobro player who played some great delta Blues and we saw Eddie Taylor Jr. sitting in with Harmonica Hinds

There were four stages running during the afternoon. As we made our way around the stages we got to see both of Muddy Waters sons perform, Big Bill Morganfield and Mud Morganfield on the same stage.

Even Muddy Waters widow, Mrs. Morganfield was there to see her boys perform and you could see how proud she was. They were joined on stage by other members of Muddy Waters band including Blues patriarch Pinetop Perkins on piano and Willie Big Eyes Smith on harmonica

As the afternoon heated up we got to hear more great Blues including Andrew Junior Boy Jones, Sherman Moody Thomas and and harmonica legend Charlie Musselwhite

As evening approached we headed to the huge Petrillo Music Shell stage to hear the days headliner acts. First up was real Chicago legend Shirley Johnson.

Shirley is breaking out big time now with a new CD on Delmark records called Blues Attack. The record is climbing the charts and was just nominated for Best Traditional Blues CD in the Blues Blast Music Awards. Shirley was also nominated as Best Female Blues Artists in the Blues Blast Music Awards. It was easy to understand why the nominators chose her as she delivered a great set with a crack band of Chicago's best musicians playing many of the songs from the new CD.

To finish of the first day was another Blues legend, Eddie C. Campbell who was celebrating his 70th birthday. Eddie first came to Chicago at the age of 10 and played with all the greats, everyone from Howlin' Wolf and Little Walter to Little Johnny Taylor to Jimmy Reed and even the great Willie Dixon, who hired him as a Chicago Blues All-Star in 1976.

Most of the time we would consider half the great talent we saw the first day a fantastic Blues festival, But this was just the start and with 2 more days to come, we headed back to rest up for the great show on day two.... Stay tuned!

Chicago Kingsnakes - Snapshots

MusicKing Records

www.myspace.com/chicagokingsnakes

The Chicago Kingsnakes are celebrating their 26th year in the blues, and their latest sampler, Snapshots. Snapshots catches this exciting four-piece unit at the top of their game. Founded in 1983 by James “Ang” Anderson, the band features Ron Berry on bass and vocals and Gus Gotsis on drums. Nelson Keaton joined in 2001 to round out the sound on harmonica, and he opens the disc off with a spirited “Leave It Where I Put It.” Nelson smokes on the set’s closer, “Whammer Jammer,” and fans of post-war, urban harp blues will revel in the way he plays the Mississippi saxophone. For me, the most memorable cut is “Get Out of Memphis,” thanks to Ang’s vocals and guitar leads, and the way the band updates a traditional blues sound.

Over the years, the Chicago Kingsnakes have released nine CDs, and some are hard to find. Thankfully, the web site, www.chicagokingsnakes.com , offers samples from 2004’s Grass Roots and 1998’s Blues Island, plus a video from their 1994 Chicago Blues Festival performance with Byher Smith. Prior to that festival, the band toured Finland and the Netherlands with Smitty, and they also shared the stage with Buddy Guy, Albert Collins, and Sugar Blue. There are six live cuts totaling a half-hour on Snapshots, and I hope that this CD gets the band more work. The band has received local and international recognition for decades, ranging from Midwest BEAT (sadly no longer in print), to the world’s blues magazine, Blues Revue.

In July, the band will play the Friends of the Blues Concert in Burbonnais on the 28th, followed by a gig at Harlem Avenue Lounge in Berwyn on the 31st, and in August, they’ll play the Chicago Botanical Garden in Glencoe on the 4th, and return to Indianapolis’ Slippery Noodle at the end of the month. If you’re in the region, check out the Chicago Kingsnakes for an exceptional evening of live blues.

Magic Slim And The Teardrops: Before You Accuse Me

Magic Slim with the late Nick Holt on bass guitar.

Eddie Thomas And Carl Scott: Tomorrow

Check out this oldie from the way, way, wayback machine!!! Eddie Thomas and Carl Scott from Virgina preforming some cool stuff. The Kazoo is a great instrument plus washboard, and a ukulelia and you got gold!

Eagle Park Slim

I love digging though Youtube looking for cool blues performers. This is Eagle Park Slim, from Eugene Oregon. Unfortunately this is not the complete song, but I like this guy a lot. Slim proves what I have said for a long time, that the blues is alive and well you just have to look hard for it sometimes. Some of the best blues performers are the guys and gals who live in your town who just show up every week like clockwork to either perform on the street or the local blues jam for free. as I always say SUPPORT YOUR LOCAL BLUESMAN AND BLUESWOMAN!!!!!!!!!!!

Stevie Ray And Albert King Live!!!!!!

A very cool reissue is coming from the fine folks at Stax. They are reissuing the Stevie Ray Vaughn, Albert King concert from 1983. This was a great show, and we all need to pick this disc up as soon as it hit the shelves.

Here is the press release

For immediate release:

On June 30, 2009, the legendary Stax Records label will reissue the digitally remastered version of In Session – the Albert King & Stevie Ray Vaughan 1983 live album that reached #1 on Billboard’s blues album chart, selling more than 300,000 units. The reissue includes three sets of liner notes by Fantasy and Stax Records’ Bill Belmont, and journalists Lee Hildebrand and Dan Forte.

Among blues guitarists and fans of the craft, Albert King was the master. Austin, Texas’ Stevie Ray Vaughan, 31 years King’s junior, exploded onto the scene in 1983, first as guitarist on David Bowie’s “Let’s Dance” followed by his own smash hit “Pride and Joy.” When the two met onstage at Antone’s in 1973, they formed an ongoing friendship. This bond culminated with the December 1983 live recording titled In Session. This remastered version of the 1983 performance by two blues legends is the only known recording of them playing together.

Frank Edwards: Mean Woman Blues

Lord knows I know the Mean Woman Blues! Amen!

This is Frank Edwards an Atlanta bluesman who passed away in 2002. He recorded for Okeh. Here is a nice clip of Edwards late in life playing the blues on the front porch, just they way it ought to be.

Albert King: Born Under A Bad Sign

Classic blues of Albert King. This is a song that I think we can all relate to at least once or twice (or more:-) in our life times.

Nick Holt RIP

Sad news from Bob Corritore

  • RIP Nick Holt 1/15/1940-6/22/2009: Bruce Iglauer reports that Nick Holt, the bass-playing younger brother of Magic Slim, died of brain cancer on Monday, June 22, 2009 in Lincoln, Nebraska, where he had been living. He was 69. Born in Granada, Mississippi in 1940, Nick moved to Chicago in 1956. Four years later, he and his brother formed the notorious Magic Slim & The Teardrops. This band persevered to become a mainstay of the Chicago blues scene. Slim's raucous guitar and Nick's insistent bass lines anchored the band, and created a tough, rock-solid groove so propulsive that it packed the dance floors nightly. It wasn't that Nick did anything fancy or flashy on the bass; he just played it simple and right. Magic Slim & The Teardrops recorded numerous albums for a wide array of labels such as Rooster Blues, Blind Pig, Wolf Records, Alligator, Isabel, Delmark, Red Lightnin', Black & Blue, Evidence, and others. The band relocated to Lincoln, Nebraska, where they had a huge following from their touring appearances at the Zoo Bar. Nick had not been touring for the last few years, possibly for health reasons. In addition to scores of Magic Slim & The Teardrops records, and various sessions as a sideman, Nick leaves us with three releases bearing his name:

Magic Slim And Nick Holt/You Can't Lose What Never Had (Wolf Records)

Nick Holt/You Better Watch Yourself (Wolf Records)

Little Boogie Boy Blues Band featuring Nick Holt/We Do It For The Blues

Many blues fans will warmly remember seeing Magic Slim & The Teardrops with the brothers’ towering presence filling up the stage while they knocked out the heaviest of shuffles. Such a loss for the blues. Prayers to Magic Slim in this time of grief. Thanks, Nick, for the great times, and the spectacular music.

Brennan Totten
By Chuck Benedon
I was at a jam session in a small town in Southeast Wisconsin. I noticed a guy who was watching the players with a certain curious interest. Between sets, I went over to him and said, "You're a player, aren't you?" "Yeah" he responded. "But, I haven't played in a while." I asked if he had brought his guitar, which he had not. He said he was new to the area and preferred to come the first time and just watch. A week or two later, he showed up with his guitar, a '70's era Gibson 175. He had a certain authenticity to his playing that piqued my own curiosity. As he came out more often, we had opportunities to play together at the jam and became friends and started to talk about playing some gigs together. That was over ten years ago, and we continue to be good friends with the Blues being part of the glue that binds us, today. We used the jam to learn each other's styles and nuances in playing. I grew up on R&B and early 60's rock, with some mix of blues, as it appeared in R&B. During the early '70's I played cover rock such as Clapton, Stones, Allman Brothers, and others with a mix of Blues from Albert King to Freddy King. So, I was as much of a rocker as I was any kind of blues player. Then one Sunday evening at the jam, Brennan brought a friend along. He was Harry "The Harpoon" Yates. Yates didn't have an axe with him, but did play guitar. He asked for mine, which was open tuned, at the time. He said he was fine with that, as he actually could only play open tunings. He wasn't joking. He and Brennan played Blues in a way I had not heard in a long time. Harry put a spin on the harp that reminded me of Sonnyboy and Little Walter. His slide guitar along with Brennan's percussive rhythms and soulful solos convinced me that from that point, all I wanted to do was to play Blues. For the next 5 years, I wouldn't even listen to any other musical form, because I wanted to learn REAL Blues and didn't want other styles to corrupt my playing. I swapped Harry for one of his Dobros and he showed me some 20's and 30's style licks and off to the land of Blues... I went out and bought every old recording I could find and played some over and over until I understood what the true essence of the blues is. Robert Johnson, Blind Blake and Elmore James became my traveling buddies in the car. With Brennan's help and guidance, by his being there and especially in my vocals, I think I've become a true Bluesman, something I am quite proud of. Brennan is a humble and noble guy. It wasn't until I knew him for quite some time, that I found out he had toured Europe, playing with the likes of Big Joe Turner, George "Harmonica" Smith, and Jonathan Richman, and appearing on bills with Blues legends like Albert Collins, and Lowell Fulson. He was a record producer for Rounder and is an extraordinary technician in the studio. He is mentioned in the latest book on Elmore James, because Brennan was the only guy who ever figured out how Elmore got his sound. Today, Brennan and I are best of friends and have hosted jam sessions in the outskirts of Milwaukee for about 10 years, with some short breaks between gigs. Our playing has a reciprocity that is as good as any, as our solos have become flawlessly intertwined, even though after playing together for over 10 years, we have maintained our own unique playing styles. Our bass players of choice, whom we have worked with for many years, are Mike Haasch and P.T. Pedersen. P.T. was Charlie Musslewhite's bassist during the seventies and is a solid natural blues bassist. He gets the call, every year, for the Chicago Blues Fest and has sat in with a myriad of nationally known blues artists. Our drummer of choice is our good friend and long time master of percussion, Tom Utschig. Tom played with Luther Allison for a short period. We have done some studio work and Brennan and I are currently going through our catalogue of recordings and trying to decide which one we might use for a CD.

Andy Coats Update

Hey everyone,

Hope June is treating you well.

I’ll be doing an “almost acoustic” show this Thursday, at the Blue Bayou …. with SPECIAL GUESTS.

-- Melvin Alston, my buddy from Durham, will be holding down a rumbling bass ….

-- And, shhhhh, the other guest is the eminent 80-year old Piedmont bluesman, also from Durham; who has the real-deal voice and plays a mean guitar; whose last name rhymes with “Coleman”. ( If you’ve been paying attention the last few months, this will be very easy to guess! ….. J )

Why the secrecy, you might ask? Well, I always seem to get myself in trouble when I broadcast that I have a gig with this fine gentleman, so this time we’ll keep the announcement under our hats!

Here are the details:

Thursday, June 25, 8:30 - 11:30 pm

Hill Country Revue: You Can Make It

Here is a video of the Hill Country Revue. They come from the hill country of Mississippi, and have two members from the North Mississippi All Stars. This clip is more southern blues than hill or delta blues, but don't let you keep you from watching a great song.

Bob Dorr And The Blue Band Update

OK, I know little or nothin' about the race car culture, but I think I'm gonna get edumacated TONIGHT (Fri) when we play the first night of the Iowa Speedway's Pit Stop Weekend in Newton. Friends say that there could be 30,000 people from all over the country on the grounds. We play outside the speedway, on a flatbed truck (you KNOW it's the BIG time when yer on a flatbed truck) doing three 50-minute shows between 8:30-11:30p. It's FREE to the public, all ages welcome. Please help vibe for NO RAIN (not good for race cars or electrified instruments) PARTY IN THE PARKING LOT!!...

Saturday night, I'm doing another LIVE Requestfest on Backtracks, my Rock'n'Roll history show on Iowa Public Radio. This is in celebration of a successful fundraiser last Saturday night, when close to $3000 in pledges came in. Thanks for the help! The show runs 7-10pm, requests, suggestions for future show spotlights, or simple salutations taken at 1-800-772-2440, ext. 5. (as always, I'll be the only one there and I answer all the calls personally, so if you get through, let it ring, I'll answer as soon as possible.) (remember, the shows deals in songs that are at least 25 years old) Or, to increase the chances that I can find your request, just reply to this email. Find the frequency in your area, or listen on line at www.iowapublicradio.org. If you missed the fundraiser and still want to help out the show, you can make a pledge at that website. Be sure and mention Backtracks in the remarks section! Call me babies...

Next week starts a busy stretch of averaging 3.5 dates a week for almost 6 weeks (that's a lot for us old guys) Fri. 6/26, 4:30-7:00pm, we play Rendezvous On The River, an effort to raise money and raise consciousness for the effort to refurbish the old Riverview Amusement Park grounds in Des Moines, Sat. 6/27 is being billed as a "Parnell Reunion". Parnell is a small town south of Williamsburg that was the scene of some pretty notorious parties in the 80s (or so I'm told. I have no actual recollection of any details) It's a street dance, 7-11pm and Sunday 6/28 is one of the gigs I look forward to every year-Sturgis Falls Days, my hometown celebration right here in Sparkle City USA! We play in Tourist Park, 5:30-7:30pm...

All of the shirts in this year's 2009 Tour shirt order are finally on the scene. Steve Campbell's design (you can see it on the homepage at www.theblueband.com) on a white, black, or royal shirt. We also have women's tanks in pink and light blue. All shirts are $15 each or two for $20, or you can get a shirt and our new disc for $20. How do we do it? VOLUME!!!....

I'll be racin' down the Blue Highway to Newton, wearin' my crash helmet while rubbin' my washboard. We're still waiting for someone to bring CAKE for our Blue Birthday that happened on June 10th (it's not really an "official" birthday until you have CAKE) and no matter if you take the checkered flag or not, we will always love you.
