Bob Dorr And The Blue Band Update

In case you didn't check in with the chat page in the last 36 hours: Apparently Elvis is wintering in Paraguay and after hearing about our dastardly winter, he decided not to return to do the IPTV Festival Special originally scheduled for Wednesday night. (when you're The King, you can do stuff like that) This means that my co-hosting of the music programming this week will start on Thursday night, 6:30p, for The Grand Ole Opry's Vintage Classics. I hope Minnie Pearl says HOWWDEEE! (she's so hip-hop with that price tag on her hat). More info or make a pledge-www.iptv.org...

Speaking of that dastardly winter, this Saturday is the moment we've all been waiting for: THE FIRST OUTDOOR DATE OF THE YEAR! We'll be at The Twisted Parrot's St. Patrick's Day Celebration-OUTSIDE!! (in a heated tent), 7:00-11:00 p.m., 6500 Hickman Rd., Windsor Heights, IA (suburban Des Moines) www.thetwistedparrot.com. "Uncle" Al Naylor is scheduled to be in the horn section with Heath! Wear layers of green...

Next Friday, Mar. 21, we've been invited to be part of the celebration of Iowa Public Radio's new frequencies in south central Iowa. One of the frequencies (89.1) will be carrying my weekend shows, so I'm looking forward to meeting new and long-time IPR listeners (Fairfield and Oskaloosa will now have a WAY better signal) The frequency will be launched in the morning of Mar. 21 with the celebration (family friendly) taking place at the new Bridge View Events Center in Ottumwa starting at 5:30p. The Blue Band plays 7-9pm. The event is free and open to the public. "Uncle " Al has promised to be part of the the horn section again that night...

We seem to continue to add a few dates to the summer schedule each week, but are still struggling to find work for April and May. Keep us in mind for that deck party at your mansion with the postcard view...

Surfing thru the TV channels after midnight, I saw the rerun of last week's Johnny Cash special that I got to co-host on IPTV. It's just plain weird seeing yourself on television, isn't it? You're so used to seeing the reverse image that you get from the mirror reflection, that seeing yourself, like others see you, is completely reverse of what YOU think you look like! And my hair is WAY greyer than I thought...

Don't ya just love it when sanctimonious people get exposed (!) for what they really are? Elliot Spitzer joins the list. I wonder what ya get for $4300...?!...

I think I'll leave it right there...

See ya on the Blue Highway, perhaps Governor Spitzer should have just rubbed his zydeco tie, bring green CAKE to the outdoor gig on Saturday and remember, we love you! Bob Dorr & The Blue Band

  • Big Pete & The Rhythm Room All-Stars to appear at Santa Barbara Blues Society Anniversary Party this Saturday: Come celebrate the thirty-first anniversary of the award-winning Santa Barbara Blues Society with a special concert. Big Pete Pearson & The Rhythm Room All-Stars will appear Saturday, March 15, 2008 at 8:30pm (doors open at 7:30pm) at Earl Warren Showgrounds, 3400 Calle Real, Santa Barbara, CA 93105. Thanks to Blues Society president Steve Daniels for all his great work in the blues. Bob Corritore was a call-in guest interview yesterday on Steve's blues radio show, Views On The Blues on KCSB 91.9FM. Thanks also to freelance writer and musician Joe Woodward, who interviewed Big Pete Pearson for a forthcoming piece in the Santa Barbara News-Press in advance of our show.
  • New band photo for Big Pete Pearson & The Rhythm Room All-Stars: Check out our new band photo taken over the weekend by David Blake, who was also the photographer of the cover photo of Big Pete Pearson/I'm Here Baby. Click here to see the low-res photo and here to see the high-res (300 DPI) photos available for your use.
  • Candye Kane health concerns: In her recent newsletter, our dear friend Candye Kane has some shocking news to report. She has been diagnosed with a form of pancreatic cancer. She is undergoing tests, and will have a medical game plan shortly. She is feeling fine, and is continuing to gig; though, at some point may need some down time for treatment. More information is available at her MySpace site by clicking here. Please send Candye your love, and sign up for her newsletter by e-mailing her at candyekanetour@aol.com. Prayers to Candye.
  • More Blues In The Movies: Since posting the first "Blues In The Movies" mention, we have received a number of emails by newsletter subscribers illuminating other places where blues on film exists. Robert Hagnas of the DP Agency contacted us about two films by Mukul Filmi Oy from Finland.

1) Mississippi-Nedervetil is a documentary showing a teacher student relationship with blues elder statesman Louisiana Red, and the young Finnish guitarist Niko Riipa of the Wentus Blues Band. For more information, click here.

2) Family Meeting documents a blues gathering in Finland to celebrate the twentieth anniversary of the Wentus Blues Band that includes special guests Eddie Kirkland, Lazy Lester, Louisiana Red, Kim Wilson, Mick Taylor, Tore Berglund, Eric Bibb, Clas Yngstrom, Omar Kent Dykes, Sven Zetterberg, and Barrence Whitfield. By documenting this blues reunion of musicians from the US, Sweden, UK, and Finland, this film illustrates the worldwide community the blues has become. To see the trailer, click here.
