Robin Rogers: Hesitation Blues

I heard this on either LastFm, or on my cable blues radio station.  I have heard this song a million times, but I really think that Robin Rogers version was the best that  I have heard and this has that nice 1920s feel to it.

Alberta Hunter: Nobody Knows You When Your Down and Out

Not sure if I posted this a long time ago, but when you have been around as long as this blog, reposting is a good thing sometimes:-)  Besides its Alberta Hunter

Robin Rogers RIP

From Bob Corritore

  • RIP Robin Rogers 1957 to 12/17/10. Singer / harmonica player Robin Rogers has died today in her hometown of Charlotte, North Carolina. She had been struggling with terminal liver cancer for a month now. Robin was well loved within the blues community and had some highly successful CDs which frequently ended up with nominations, and she was honored with a Blues Blast Music Award in 2009, for "Best Female". Her humble and sincere personality, coupled with her unmistakable talent, made us all take her in as an adopted little sister. She had lead a very hard life, complete with homelessness, and drug and alcohol abuse, but she had turned her life around, and found a positive outlet in blues music. She had been sober for 21 years and happily wed to her husband, and musical partner Tony Rogers who was by her side until the end. Many benefits sprouted around the country and her latest record Back In The Fire, on the Blind Pig label, was met with great success, and has recently been nominated for a Blues Music Award. Please spend a few minutes to hear the NPR interview with Robin, from a few weeks ago. . Thank you Robin, for your great music, and your strong heart. Sue Foley: Blues In D, Quenn Bee

I haven't seen Sue Foley in years, but I love her guitar playing. I once gave her a cassette tape of music! Don't know what she thought about it though:-)

Odetta Holmes RIP

More sad news from Bob Corritore

December 3, 2008

  • RIP Odetta 12/31/1930-12/2/2008: It is with great sadness that we write about the passing of Odetta Holmes. Known in the circles of blues, spirituals, and folk, as well as being a beacon for the civil rights movement, Odetta was one of the most memorable musical personalities to emerge from the 1960s. She died of a heart attack on December 2, 2008 after being hospitalized for kidney failure. She was 77. Odetta was born on December 31, 1930, and at age 3, she moved to Los Angeles with her mother where she started singing and playing guitar. She earned a music degree from Los Angeles City College, focusing on musicals and classical, but her real love was the expressiveness of folk songs and spirituals. While working in the West Coast theater circuit, she found her way to the then emerging San Francisco folk scene, where she felt right at home. She made her first record, Odetta Sings Ballads & Blues, of which Bob Dylan stated in a 1978 interview with Playboy, was "The first thing that turned me on to folk singing". She recorded several albums during the 1960s, and became perhaps the most prominent musical voice in the civil rights movement, highlighted by a famous performance of the song "Oh Freedom" at the August 1963 March On Washington. She married three times, with one of her husbands being Louisiana Red, whom she wed in 1977. In recent years, her career was revitalized by her recorded work with Mark Carpentieri's MC Records. She recorded three CDs for MC, which earned her a W.C. Handy Award nomination (now called Blues Music Awards) and two Grammy® nominations. In 1999, Odetta was awarded the National Medal of the Arts and Humanities by President Clinton. In 2003, the Library Of Congress presented her with a Living Legend Award. She was a great musician and a kind and insightful person with a purposefulness to all her actions. God bless Odetta. PRESS KIT

I am sending this Press Kit in order to be considered for your next event or festival.

BIOGRAPHY

Sweet Angel was born in the cradle of R&B, Memphis, Tennessee, and has been singing and playing music from her days in elementary school. She was such a talented reed player that she won seats in the top ten All West Tennessee Bands and all City Bands for clarinet and saxophone when she was still only in middle school. Of course lots of people show an aptitude for music at a young age and either it means they peaked early or they lack the motivation or drive to parlay it into a career.

Judging by her first recording, Another Man's Meat On My Plate, that's not the case with Sweet Angel. Not only does she apparently have musical talent to spare, she's got the strength of personality and character needed to make that talent come alive when she performs. There are plenty of people, who can sing, and there are plenty of people who can play musical instruments, but there are very few people who have that extra quality that compels every eye in the house to focus on them when they walk on stage and begin to play.

Listening to the way Sweet Angel delivers her material on disc, it's easy to see her on stage. You've heard of performers who make each person in their live audience feel as if songs are sung to them personally; that's rare enough, yet Sweet Angel somehow manages to accomplish that on disc. Perhaps it's her choice of material, or that she is without affectation and you just know that what you hear is what you get. Maybe it's her matter-of-fact delivery that makes her sound like she's someone you could just as easily sit and talk with as watch on stage.

Whatever it is, she breaks down that invisible barrier between audience and performer that is so key to making heartfelt music like soul or R&B come to life. So it doesn't matter if she's singing slow and soft as on "Easy Loving You," or laying it on the line for some ex in the hard driving title track "Another Man's Meat On My Plate." (I just have to say I don't think I've heard a better song, with better lyrics or title for a woman to sing in a long time than this track. It was written by a man, Sweet Angel's husband/producer Mike Dobbins, making that notion that even better.)

There are a lot of performers that you might acknowledge for great voices or extraordinary musicianship, but their music and songs are forgettable. To my mind that means the person has cared more about themselves than the song that they perform. That's not the case with Sweet Angel; she's putting all her energies into selling the song and not only does it make the material all the more powerful, in the end it makes her more memorable.

What sticks in my head after listening to her disc is the way she turned a phrase in a particular song that gave it character and personality; that brought the song to life. She has a good, strong voice, which she doesn't waste on pointless pyrotechnics; instead she uses it intelligently to make sure that every word and every line of what she sings is believable. Some people call that selling a song, but you only ever need to sell a song if you don't have the talent to convey what it offers. When you have talent such as Sweet Angel's, you do what you do best and let the song take care of itself.

As all of the material on Another Man's Meat On My Plate was written for Sweet Angel by her husband and producer Mike Dobbins, he's obviously going to be making damn sure that he takes advantage of her strengths. The great thing about the job he's done is that it's obvious that not only does he know Sweet Angel's strengths, but he has enough faith in them that he doesn't mess with them in the post-production. If these two can continue to progress along the path they've started to chart with this first album we can look forward to years more of great R&B music played and sung the way it's meant to be.

Sweet Angel's Another Man's Meat On My Plate is a great first album by an R&B performer worth watching. Her second album Handle Your Business confirms that Sweet Angel is here to stay. Written and produced by Sweet Angel and her husband Mike Dobbins, it is just as good as or better than her debut album.

If you happen to be down in the Tennessee area and you have a chance to check her out live I doubt you'll be disappointed. R&B might not be the force it once was, but with people like Sweet Angel out there it might just be on its way back; and that is a good thing.

In May 2008, Sweet Angel signed a record deal with Ecko Records.

It was stated by many that Sweet Angel would not remain an independent artist for long. Well, the statements were correct.

Ecko Records was founded in 1995 in the home of the Blues, Memphis, Tennessee. In a short time it has become known as one of the best and most consistent companies in the contemporary Blues and R&B field. Ecko has built a roster of first rate southern soul and blues performers. Its list of artists includes Denise LaSalle, Carl Sims, Lee "Shot" Williams, Sheba Potts-Wright, Donnie Ray, O. B. Buchana, Barbara Carr, Ms. Jody and now the unforgettable Sweet Angel. Ecko is dedicated to continually releasing the best of contemporary blues and soul.

Kokp Taylor In Debt To The IRS

Thanks to Sabrina for the tip!

Here is an article in Forbes (Click Here to read about it) about the Queen of the blues Koko Taylor who has run afoul of the IRS. I am not anti tax, or anti IRS, but it is stuff like this that makes the IRS look bad. Koko is sick, and in a wheelchair. She doesnt have anywhere near the number of gigs that she had just a few years ago, and now the taxman wants to take what little she has left. I certainly hope someone in the Chicago area can step up and help Koko out. Koko owes around 400,000 dollars. I know that is probably too much money for the local blues cats to raise up. However, someone who is worth millions and gives away cars, could pay that off easily. Someone who does great things for people who are less off, and think of the TV ratings! Hmmmmm, I wonder who in Chicago could do that????? Just wishful thinking on my part.
