Blues Cruise

Press Release from Iowa Public Radio

Iowa Public Radio presents Blues Cruise with Bob Dorr & the Blue Band

5/1/09 (Des Moines) - Set sail with us on Friday, June 5 on the mighty Mississippi River for the 2009 Blues Cruise. Join Iowa Public Radio and the Spirit of Dubuque for a three-hour tour with Bob Dorr & the Blue Band.

Led by Iowa Public Radio’s very own “weekend guy,” the Blue Band has acquired a dedicated fan base of all ages and has become one of the state’s most revered and requested bands. These Iowa Rock ‘n’ Roll Hall of Fame and Blues Hall of Fame inductees find themselves celebrating their 28th anniversary of rockin’ the heartland.

The Spirit of Dubuque is a replica of a century-old Mississippi River steamboat with decorative smokestacks, a scalloped canopy over its open-air deck, and Victorian red and gold décor throughout the enclosed dining salon. The gangway and dining area are handicapped accessible for standard wheelchairs.

Boarding begins at 7 p.m. at the 3rd Street Ice Harbor in Dubuque. The Blues Cruise departs at 7:30 p.m. and returns at 10:30 p.m. Drinks and concessions are available and sold separately.

Attendance at the event is limited to 300 guests and tickets are available in advance for $15 per person. Tickets are available for purchase online at iowapublicradio.org or by phone at 800-772-2440, ext. 0. Advance tickets are also available at Bob’s Guitars in Cedar Falls and Moondog Music in Dubuque. Tickets purchased at the event are $20 per person. All proceeds benefit Iowa Public Radio.

Iowa Public Radio informs, enriches and engages Iowans through radio programming and other media. Iowa Public Radio includes the WOI Radio Group (Iowa State University, Ames), KUNI-KHKE (University of Northern Iowa, Cedar Falls), and KSUI-WSUI (University of Iowa, Iowa City).

Eric Sardinas & Big Motor to headline 2009 Winter Blues Blowout for Iowa Public Radio

1/14/09 (Cedar Falls) - Eric Sardinas brings his signature brand of delta dynamite to the Electric Park Ballroom in Waterloo on February 21 for the 2009 Winter Blues Blowout, presented by the Friends of KUNI/KHKE on behalf of Iowa Public Radio.

Picking up the guitar at the age of six, Eric Sardinas reaped a heapin' helpin' of inspiration from a melting pot of influences numbering R&B, gospel, rock and roll and most tellingly, his profound love of traditional blues forms. All inform the songwriting and incendiary playing on the new album, "Eric Sardinas and Big Motor." And while those influences inexorably shape his playing he's no mere mimic. Instead, he's absorbed all those styles into his DNA, reinterpreting them into his own driving contemporary blues/rock sound.

On his latest album, the artist delivers a powerful musical statement that stands as his most accomplished release to date, fueled by a wily sense of adventure, imagination and ferocious lead guitar finery. Honest, soulful and fire-branded with a gritty passion, Eric Sardinas is the real deal, infusing his music with an embattled spirit, reconfiguring deep southern blues with the finesse of a master. Scoring accolades for his previous studio albums (1999's "Treat Me Right," 2001's "Devil's Train" and 2003's "Black Pearls"), Sardinas has garnered acclaim for his explosive live performances, which clearly demonstrate his consummate six-string agility. A veteran of the live circuit, he’s racked up thousands of performances worldwide.

Opening the show is Iowa City area's Kevin "BF" Burt & the Instigators. Showtime is 8 p.m. (doors open at 7 p.m.).

Tickets are $20 in advance ($25 at the door). Advance tickets can be ordered online at www.iowapublicradio.org or by calling 800-772-2440, ext. 0. Advance tickets are also available at the KUNI Studios and Bob's Guitars in Cedar Falls. All proceeds benefit Iowa Public Radio.

Financial support is made possible by The Warner Group, Inc. (Waterloo), Lucky 13 Design (Des Moines), Blue Monday Monthly (Owatonna, MN), Blackhawk Hotel (Cedar Falls) and the Friends of KUNI/KHKE.

Bob Dorr IPTV And IPR Update

Bob Dorr is the hardest working man in Iowa:-) Besides his radio gig at KUNI, and his outstanding band The Blue Band. He also helps raise money for IPTV. Here are some updates from the hardest working man in Iowa Showbiz:-)

There are no Blue Band dates this week (bad time of year to be out of work) so there is NO Blue Note either...

However, my Iowa Public Broadcasting career is in full swing! Iowa Public Television has invited me to be part of the fundraising team for two GREAT shows. TONIGHT (11/28) The Eric Clapton Crossroads Special 8-11pm. If you like guitar playing, you're gonna LOVE this one! Recorded last July in Chicago, this is the first time this special has aired. Then, tomorrow night, (11/29) 7:30-8:30, the Man In Black-Johnny Cash! This is another NEW special! As the Federal and State governments cut back on funds for the Public Broadcasting System (don't get me started on what could be accomplished with just one month's worth of Iraq spending) it becomes more and more incumbent on viewers/listeners to support Public Broadcasting. IPTV is the ONLY state-wide TV network and one of the state's most valuable resources. I'll be waiting to hear your phone call of support. I'm gonna bet that DVD of the Clapton show would make a great stocking stuffer for someone on your list! (stuff 'er? YOU stuff 'er, you brought 'er!) Please be generous in support of IOWA public broadcasting. More info: www.iptv.org...

And speaking of Public Broadcasting, because there is no Blue Band date this weekend, (and this is NOT a Blue Note) I'll be doing my Rock'n'Roll history show, Backtracks, on Iowa Public Radio-KUNI, LIVE this Saturday night, 7-10pm!! Suggestions/requests/salutations: 1-800-772-2440, ext. 5. You can get more info, listen on line, or even make a Christmas donation of support (!) at www.kuniradio.org...

Next weekend is Tour DeCasino week for the Blue Crew. Fri. 12/7 at Prairie Meadows Finish Line Lounge in Altoona. Sat. 12/8 at The Riverside Casino, south of Iowa City...

Since this is NOT a Blue Note, I won't tell you of my RETURN trip to the HyVee last week...

It's important to support things you enjoy/use/need. Write a check to your favorite Iowa Public broadcasting station-you'll be amazed at how great it makes you feel that you supported something you love and use. And then make plans to join The Blue Band sometime soon (that New Year's Eve reunion show is really gonna be fun. Tickets available NOW. More info: http://www.theblueband.com/newyear.htm)...

I gotta git to Des Moines. It takes the make-up artist extra time with me! If she could only make me look 15 years younger and 20 pounds lighter! (that might take WAY too much time) We love you, Bob Dorr & The Blue Band

PS-since there is no Blue Band show this weekend, you might want to check out Wonderful Wally the Alligator Rassler (Christopher Wilcox) and his comedy routine in Cedar Rapids. His email note says: Friday night at Little King Komedy (Deli) where I will be joining Bustin Dustin and a Cedar Falls Comedian for a DVD recording of our stuff! I will be doing a longer set at Little King. Little King is smoke and alcohol free but I hope to have fun anyway! Little King Deli is located at 211 2nd St SE and the show will run from 7:30 until aprox. 9:00 PM.
