Hey Blues Fans,

Reviewer James Walker made it to Nick Moss and the Flip Tops and Lurrie Bell's CD release party for "Live at Chan’s – Combo Platter No. 2" last weekend. The party was held at Buddy Guys' Legends in Chicago . It was quite a show and even Buddy Guy himself got into the fun sitting in for a bit. See James' review of this new CD in this issue below.

Blues "Births"

We all have the same passion for Blues music! That's why we do the Blues Blast, to keep the Blues alive. So we were pleased to hear of a couple Blues "births" this week.

Two new Blues Societies sent us press releases this week. Massachusetts residents now have the newly formed Massachusetts Blues Society. Their organization was created to further the acceptance and popularity of the Blues. Their website is http://www.massblues.org.

The Windy City Blues Society is a new organization in Chicago, IL. They plan to offer a new Visitors Guide to Chicago Blues Festival 2009 on their website at www.WindyCityBlues.org featuring a list of recommended hotels, Chicago Blues clubs and other businesses that provide discounts to their members. They are also planning a 3-day ‘Instant Friends’ party in Grant Park during the fest. If you plan on visiting Chicago for the Biggest Blues Festival on the Planet, check them out.

Both of these organizations would like to do link exchanges with other Blues societies and fans so check them out and help them keep the Blues alive!

Nick Moss and The Flip Tops with Special Guest Lurrie Bell

Live at Chan’s – Combo Platter No. 2

Blue Bella Records

Style: Electric Chicago Blues, Modern Electric Blues

“Attention ladies and gentlemen: Please adjust your seats, pour yourself a tall drink, and light up a smoke. This ship on the-river-of-time is about to set sail, and your captain, Nick Moss, promises to not “Rock” the boat! Our vessel for this journey is the finest in newly crafted and guitar powered vehicles that will free your mind from your body, allowing it to pleasurably cruise along for the next 79 minutes. On this excursion, expect turns, rapids, riding cresting waves and slow rolling – all to a steady rhythm. Lurrie Bell, the First Mate, and the crew consisting of The Flip Tops are ship shape and tuned to please. So, sit back and enjoy!” -- More than any other player, Nick Moss playing guitar live, and in this case recorded live, takes me on a time cruise where nothing matters but the music.

Nick Moss’ deft ability to be a modern and progressive artist while remaining faithful to Chicago Blues customs is explained by Craig Ruskey in the liner notes: Moss is “...the perfect blend of an artist straddling the fine line between soaring imaginative guitar efforts and traditional, firmly rooted blues grooves....Moss traverses the electric blues guitar landscape effortlessly, without ever sounding like numerous others who appear to have lifted their licks off a dusty museum shelf. Check out, too, his inspired singing....”

Nick’s first live recording in 2006 done at Chan’s Eggrolls & Jazz in Woonsocket, Rhode Island, was so successful and delicious, it called for a second helping. This time special guest Chicago’s critically acclaimed Lurrie Bell plays guitar and sings on four songs alongside Gerry Hundt, Willie Oshawny, Bob Carter, and wife Kate Moss who more than ably helps with bass duties on five songs. Six of the songs are originals by either Nick Moss or Gerry Hundt or Nick and Gerry. Covers include songs by Muddy Waters and Eddie Boyd.

Nick Moss & the Flip Tops have consistently been nominated for a Blues Music Award for Band of the Year. They truly deserve a win because they are, first, a true band – not a studio amalgam and, secondly, each player easily trades off instruments for various songs. For 2009, more BMA nominations include: “Instrumentalist-Other” Gerry Hundt – Mandolin, and Lurrie Bell with two BMA nods: Traditional Blues Male Artist of the Year and Instrumentalist-Guitar

The cruise leaves the dock in high gear with a loping instrumental workout appropriately titled, “Spare Ribs & Chopsticks.” Nick’s fluid guitar tones are completely in his control - from harmonic chords to ringing runs to stinging staccatos. Band member Piano Willie Oshawny gets a nice solo about four minutes into the eight minute plus romp.

For the second cut, Kate Moss joins and takes the bass guitar, moving “The Trouble Shooter” Gerry Hundt to heart-felt harmonica. Now in a five piece Chicago Blues ensemble, the band pays tribute to the genre. The song does not stop at the classic three minutes, however; their contemporary 12 bar approach carries for eight minutes. Nick’s plaintive vocals expertly seal the deal explaining he wants to “try to be the man you want me to be.”

The pace quickens slightly as Hundt masterfully switches to the mandolin for a cut off of his own “Since Way Back” CD titled “Whiskey Makes Me Mean.” Here, Nick plays harmonica like it is his main instrument. Track four is a fun romp using a hook reminiscent of the one that goes, “She can’t help it; the girl can’t help it.”

“Lonesome Bedroom Blues” is one of the afore mentioned, float-me-away songs. Nick plays and forlornly sings a slow blues with plenty of harmonica from Gerry and keyboard mastery from Willie while Kate and Bob Carter on drums power the rhythm section.

Track six, “Fill’er Up” was originally a three minute acoustic number during the “Smithsonian Set” on Nick’s last album, the double CD, “Play It ‘Til Tomorrow.” Here it is presented as an electric number with Gerry again smoking on harmonica while Kate takes the bass.

Tracks seven through ten demonstrate why Lurrie Bell in 2008 was twice a magazine cover boy, a Living Blues magazine double award winner, and the Blues Blast Music Award winner for Best Traditional Blues Recording (“Let’s Talk About Love”). According to Nick’s introduction, no one plays pure, straight Chicago Blues guitar any better! Lurrie’s whiskey edged vocals on “Don’t You Lie To Me,” the thirteen minute “Five Long years,” and “I’m Ready” are a complement to his scorching and inventive guitar playing. These four songs are a five-some with Gerry on bass and Kate sitting out.

Nick Moss and Lurrie Bell trading leads and guitar licks – it just doesn’t get better than that! The sold-out audience at Chan’s audibly gave their many approvals.

Keeping the Blues not just alive but vigorously healthy? Nick Moss gets it....and gets it right. This is one Blues Cruise you don’t want to miss, and you don’t even have to go near the water!

John Parker - Self Titled

Running Monkey

12 tracks Total time: 50:05

www.JohnParkerblues.com

www.myspace.com/JohnParkerBlues

www.sonicbids.com/JohnParker

John Parker was the president of California’s Santa Clarita Blues Society, an indefatigable fund-raiser for cancer research, and founder of three blues bands. He also suffered from cancer himself, and died of the disease only three days after he’d put the final touches on this CD, Self Titled. Devoted to his music and his fans, he even performed a concert in freezing weather only 21 days after he’d had a liver transplant!

Self Titled is 12 tracks of contemporary electric blues that, while many of the songs do rock, is solidly blues, not blues-rock. Three of the songs are not John Parker originals, and the only obvious cover is that of Louis Jordan’s classic “Early In The Morning.” But even here there’s a notable originality, as the song is rendered not as the standard jump blues of the original, but as a contemporary blues with a rhumba beat. Of the other two non-originals, “I’ll Never Be Free” is solidly in a soul groove, while “I’ve Got The Blues Baby” is a slow, ruminative blues of getting it from all sides, from finances to a nasty woman.

John Parker has a flair for blues lyrics, and that shows well on his nine originals. Only four of the songs deal with that perpetual preoccupation of the blues, love and women, good and bad. “Loves Gonna Find You” talks of the search of love, “My Valentine” celebrates his good woman of many years, “Hopeless Romance” talks of a bad love relationship, and “Queen Of The Damned” is a strikingly different and original blues of a bad, bad woman.

But the other John Parker originals talk of other things. “I Got Me a New Car” tells of the woes of his old car, and how he’s got to replace it, while “The Price Of Fame” takes an ironic look at being as “famous” as—John Parker! “Waitin’ For The Water To Rise” is a tale of woe that seems to be at least indirectly inspired by the destructive flooding of New Orleans by Hurricane Katrina. Two songs are autographical paeans of hope despite adversity that are obviously inspired by his fight against cancer, “I Ain’t Gonna Give Up” and “Forget All My Fears.”

Parker plays lead guitar throughout, with plenty of deliciously bluesy lead work. Steve Haller’s definitive piano, organ and electric keyboard work is a presence on every track, and the rhythm sections of drummers Chris Collier, Ralf Muelleger, or Kyle Culkin, bassist Bill Rufino, and Jeff Jensen on rhythm guitar provide a solid underpinning throughout. Kyle Culkin is featured on second rhythm guitar on “Loves Gonna Find You,” and Nate LaPointe plays slide electric guitar on “My Valentine” and pedal steel guitar with aplomb on “I Ain’t Gonna Give Up.” Tasty drum and bass solos are provided by drummer Chris Collier and bassist Bill Ruffino respectively, directly back-to-back, on “Queen Of The Damned.” Bluesman John Parker definitely went out with a bang, not a whimper, on his last CD, Self Titled, which makes this CD a strong listen for those who want nothing but straight-ahead contemporary blues with an original lyrical flair, and no frills added.

Reviewer George Fish lives in Indianapolis, Indiana, home of blues legends Yank Rachell and Leroy Carr, and writes a regular music column, “Blues and More” for the online Bloomington (IN) Alternative. He’s also published in the regional Indiana blues and alternative presses as well as Living Blues and Blues Access, and wrote the notes for Yank Rachell’s Delmark album, Chicago Style. He has also published on blues and pop music for the left-wing press as well, and has appeared in Against the Current and Socialism and Democracy, as well as the online Political Affairs and MRZine.

Garrett Mason - Love & Sound

http://www.garrettmason.com/

www.myspace.com/garrettmasonmusic

Being a radio host I receive many great blues albums so it is not easy to rock my world with a single CD. Having said that I need to confess, Garrett Mason’s “Love & Sound” made me open my mouth, sit down and listen from start to finish with only one thought in mind, “wow”.

Seeing guitar-bass-drums trio on a cover photo can make some people think this will be another Stevie Ray Vaughanish disc. Well, it’s not. Those guys play soul! Soul as pure as it gets with just three people acting like a well oiled rhythm machine. It all sounds like the MG’s of Stax having a blast jamming with the Hi Rhythm section. Their rhythm patterns, clever breaks and the use of dynamics – it all brings to mind the best soul albums ever recorded and keeping in mind the Garrett Mason band is a trio, not an orchestra, it’s almost surreal.

I love the way those guys pay attention to details when it comes to the sound of their music – “Howlin’ For My Baby” or “Grapple Hold” sounds like they were recorded in Muscle Shoals back in the day. Album’s blues songs, on the other hand, are as raw as anything that came out of West or South Side of Chicago.

The sound of “Something About You” is a killer, it’s like the energy of Magic Sam and Otis Rush living in that particular cut. I have heard a lot, believe me, but Mason’s blues impressed me big time. But fantastic music delivered with a fantastic sound is not the only thing they have to offer. With all original songs Garrett could give private lessons on writing songs that are memorable and interesting. Plus, he has a voice to die for. It’s strong, rough and soulful at the same time, a perfect vehicle for groovy soul music and gritty blues. I am listening, listening and can’t get enough of his vocals, that means a lot.

To make it short, “Love & Sond” is the best Canadian CD I have heard this year and one of this year’s must have releases. It won’t be easy to beat Garrett Mason with this one, that’s for sure.

Featured Blues Review 4 of 4

Ingrid Gerdes - The Eclectic Collection

http://www.myspace.com/ingridgerdesmusic

Did you ever wonder how brilliant it would be to have all your favorite shades of music on one disc? The smoothness of classic, Motown-era pop; the grit and sex of Southern-soul; the sunshine and swaying feel of reggae; the romantic mood of Eva Cassidy-like sensual ballads – all one a single CD? Add a super-tight band backing up one of the most interesting and versatile singers on the circuit today, both technically fantastic and true to herself, and what you get is a debut album by Ingrid Gerdes, “The Eclectic Collection”.

With so many female singers out there exploring nu-soul territory made famous by Joss Stone Ingrid decided to go deeper and recorded a beautiful set of original material, plus two well chosen covers, covering music styles she loves the most. The idea, as risky as it was, gave some great results.

The very first notes of the album-opener, “Little Bit Of Sun”, reveal the secret – we’re here for a real treat. Passionate, strong but never over the top lead vocals and heavenly backing voices laid upon a steady groove produced by well-rehearsed combo.

With “Should’ve Known” the groove gets deeper as the band takes us on a reggae side of town - if there ever was something like reggae-soul this is it. It’s fresh and very sexy.

Every song in this collection sounds a little bit different, but what makes them an album, instead of just a bunch of songs is Ingrid’s sensitivity and the chemistry between her and talented musicians backing her up. Just listen to “It’s Too Late” as well-oiled soul machinery takes us on a journey south, juke joint bound. If this in not the perfect radio single, then I’m not a radio DJ!

Being a self-confident Femme Fatale in one moment, Ingrid becomes a defenseless girl in the other – her singing on “Happy” is one of the most fragile I’ve ever heard on record, so pure.

With different styles, grooves and moods Ingrid Gerdes gives a powerful statement - the Berklee School of Music she has graduated can be proud of her. If you love intimacy in your music, get “The Eclectic Collection” and enjoy.

But remember to keep it close to your player – when love-making time comes, you won’t find any better disc than this one! A five star CD.
