Donal O'Carroll Division of The Ancient Order of Hibernians is sponsoring a Celtic music concert in Marietta featuring RUNA at the Adelphia Music Hall, 203 Second Street, Marietta, Ohio on Thursday evening, June 14th. Past participants have come from New York, Ohio, West Virginia, Michigan, Kentucky, Indiana, and Pennsylvania. They compete for sponsorship to the International Blues Challenge ( IBC). The first place winner of The River City Blues Competition in 2012 will receive $1200 dollars in cash and BJFM sponsorship to the IBC in Memphis early in 2013 where they will gain valuable exposure to record label A&R representatives and Blues industry professionals and festival promoters capable of real career advancement for a serious blues musician.   Second place winner will receive $600 in cash and third place winner will receive $300 in cash. There will be 15 slots in the competition this year. The big winners, however, are the blues fans who enjoy a weekend of great blues entertainment rarely available in Southeast Ohio at a bargain price. Marietta has set the stage for the other competitions that exist in the state. One of the things that makes the Marietta competition unique is that it has no geographic restrictions and is open to serious Blues acts from anywhere. Even though SBC calls Columbus, OH home, the trio is hardly ever there, since they won The International Blues Challenge (IBC) in Memphis, TN back in 2007.  Since then, they've pretty much been "on the road" to places like listed above, and more we can't even think of.  You might say SCB has been "kinda busy." The Sean Carney Band features Albert King Awardwinner (for best guitar) Sean Carney on guitar and vocals, longtime Carney friend, business partner and co-producer Eric Blume on drums and vocals, and original bassman Steve Perakis on the upright bass.  That's it - just a trio.  But you won't be thinking "just a trio" when you hear them.  Their music is solid, tight and powerful. Beyond great musical talent, the three have a unique style blues fans find quite entertaining.  You'll see why SCB is sought after by blues venues and blues festivals all over the world. Ellis released his fourth solo CD "The Forgetting Place" on NY's NewSong Recordings in March while on a two week leave from Iraq. He returned in August to hit the road with guitarist Bud Carroll and his backing band The Southern Souls, who can be heard backing Ellis on his previous two releases. "The Forgetting Place" was recorded in Athens, OH with renowned producer Eddie Ashworth (Sublime, Pennywise), as was the debut full-length by Bud Carroll  & the Southern Souls - "Wasted Words &Best Intentions." Ellis has made two solo appearances on Mountain Stage since 2007 and last February Bud Carroll & the Southern Souls debuted on the NPR program for the first time, alongside Sam Bush, The Bottle Rockets and Lucero. On their most recent musical tour Ellis and Carroll have appeared at the Purple Fiddle in Thomas, WV and The Basement in Nashville, TN, as well as appearances at the Aunt Jenny Festival in Logan and the recent Huntington Music & Arts Festival at Ritter Park in Huntington. "Chef Joe" is Back!!10-Questions for "Chef Joe" I thought it might be fun to find out what "Chef Joe" has been up to before returning to Marietta as the chef at the new Galley/Adelphia.  An Interview by the Voice. 1. I've always known you as simply "Chef Joe."  Spell your last name for me.   Joe Rovinsky #2:  When I moved back here in the early nineties, you were the chef at The Lafayette Hotel - back when things were good there.  You ran a tight ship and the food was good there - The Gun Room was the finest restaurant in Marietta.  Tell us a little about that gig...  That was a great gig and I have an immense love for the Lafayette. I was Executive Chef and Food and Beverage Director there for 4 great years. As you may recall I was very involved in The Jazz and Blues Festival there. One of my favorite memories from those days was escorting Koko Taylor through the kitchen and onto the Stage at a Jazz and Blues Fest Event. She held my hand the whole time and as we passed the line in the kitchen she pulled me to a stop and jokingly said; "I'm Hungry, Let's Eat, They'll Wait for Us!" Of course when we entered the Grand Ballroom the crowd just went nuts! #3:  Tell us what you've been up to since those "glory days" of The Lafayette...  I've been living the good life as I always try to do. I opened several restaurants here in Marietta after I left the hotel. I left Marietta in 2001 for San Francisco. I spent three years there in my favorite city in the world. I then spent seven years in Chicago, another great food town! #4:  "Chef Joe," Tell us what brought you back to our little corner of the world?  Many things brought me back home; the charm of this city, family and not least The galley and especially the Adelphia Room. I took one look at the new Adelphia Room and knew I had to be a part of the excitement! #5:  How did you get hooked up with the folks at The Galley?  As long as I've been in Marietta I have had an acquaintanceship with John Lehman. At the time he owned the old Dos Rios Restaurant on Second Street (Now Tampico). We shared ideas about the restaurant business and especially our visions for Marietta. We share a great love for this city. I am glad to finally have the opportunity to work with John.  #6:  Tell us your "concept" for The Galley - what are you trying to do there? Our concept is a simple yet important one. Serve the best quality food in the land! We have a small army of very talented chefs and a bunch of dedicated front of the house staff to make every visit to The Galley and The Adelphia memorable.  #7:  How's things going so far?  Things are going great! We constantly have something exciting to work on with the addition of The Adelphia to the mix. We have been having a great time pairing our specials with the entertainment. For instance we will have another world class menu for The Bob Thompson Unit  show on December 2nd! We're now planning our New Years Eve program with The Fossils and we'll have some fantastic dinner specials and packages for the evening! Miss Ella Was There..... And Here Is What She Had To Say About It -- Fourth Annual Appalachian Blues Competition             The West Virginia Blues Society held its fourth annual competition on October 2nd at Tomahawks Smokehouse & Saloon in St. Albans, WV. It was a well attended competition and was not to be missed.             There was a very nice variety of solo/duo and band acts from a four state area including, of course, West Virginia as well as Virginia, Ohio, and Pennsylvania. It was a relaxed atmosphere in which John Gifford ("Giff") supplied the back line, Tim Lemmons was the sound man, Dusty Scott (the man to have at any Blues venue) was taking the photos, and Ed Shafer was MC.             The five judges were from a wide spectrum of the Blues world and were, in no particular order, Don Vecchio (Vice-president of the Western, PA Blues Society), Ray Hensley (musician and guitar instructor), Paula Stewart (of the Huntington Harmonica Club), Mike Powers (from Yellow Dog records), and Miss Ella - Sister to the Blues.             There was so much wonderful talent and, like all Blues competitions, there were no losers as all of the acts gained valuable experience and made new contacts. The winners were announced and presented their plaques and checks by President of the WVBS Jack Rice at the end of the competition.
