Blue Band Update

By Bob Dorr

Pretty much just the facts, mammals...

TONIGHT! (it can't possibly be Friday already, can it?) Jackie and Tim Trpkosh's anniversary party, open to the public, free of charge, at The Dry Dock in Shueyville (suburban Cedar Rapids) 8-midnight. Bunky Marlow makes a rare road appearance with us on saxophone! If you remember The Blue Band at The Showboat or McGlinn's in Cedar Rapids in the early 80s, then you remember Bunky! (I'm not sure Bunky or I remember any details from those dates!) Tim says the best way to get there is to take I-380 to the Swisher exit (just a little south of Cedar Rapids) go east to the first stop sign, which is old Hwy 218, take a left, and the Dry Dock is on that road. BRING CAKE!...

Saturday night (5/10), The Sundown in Williamsburg, 8:30p-12:30a. The food's great, get there early, dance late. The full horn section with Heath and Al will be along for that one! I've played this place about 30 years (no snide remarks about how my career "sure has taken off"!) Children of people that were following The Little Red Rooster Band back when I first played in that place, now have children...

Next Saturday (5/17) I'm really looking forward to playing a brand new place in Waterloo-The Screaming Eagle, at Fourth and Lafayette Streets. We'll be the second band ever to play there! A state of the art sound system and smoke free atmosphere is promised. Bunky & Al will make up the full horn section that night. It should be lots of fun, in what appears to be the new, growing, entertainment district in Waterloo...

The music part of our soon to be released New Year's Eve Reunion 2007 cd is completely finished. The Wizard of Wires/Sultan of Solder/Deacon of Decibels/Knave of Knobs, audio engineer Phil Maass really has outdone himself this time, especially having a 10 piece band on the band stand and saddled with my usual tight fisted (frugal) budget. The BIG band version of some of these old tunes really sounds great. Thanks Phil! This will be a Homemade Hot Fudge release (there's that frugal budget again) We'll have 'em for sale as soon as we can come up with some kind of cover art! We're hoping to have two or three songs posted on the website by early next week and two or three different songs posted on the My Space page as well...

Speaking of frugal...the state of the small-time band business like ours is precarious at best. The summer festival season is usually the only time we can actually make a living at this. This summer's dates were booked 6-8 months ago when gas was selling for about $2.70 a gallon. Couple that with the fact that the equipment truck gets 10 MPG, the festivals are cutting back on what they can pay, and gas likely to be $4 a gallon by Memorial Day, and all of a sudden the summertime profit is sure to evaporate by the 4th of July. Thanks for your generosity at the tip jar, as always, we promise to spend that money only on gas, nothing frivolous like food or rent or clothes...

I finally got all the musty, mildew carpeting out of my basement living quarters this week, and moved my bedroom above ground (did you know that there is a bright ball of fire that burns in the eastern sky between 6-11am?) (I never knew that until this week) My house now looks like some small disaster hit it. It only adds to my recluse mystique. WHAT??...

See ya on the Blue Highway (save gas-DRIVE 55!) (uh, no, I can't drive 55) (if we could just figure out a way to power trucks with CAKE!) Keep rubbin' yer washboard/zydeco tie (there are 3 good tie rubbin' songs on that new cd) and always remember we love you, Bob Dorr & The Blue Band

Otis Redding: Try A Little Tenderness

An interesting video of Otis Redding with Booker T and the MGs. The song starts out a little ragged, but of course once they get going it gets really good:-)

Bobby Darin: Beyond The Sea

YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I found the ultra cool, hilarious not safe for tv in 1973 video of Bobby Darin singing Beyond The Sea! I have been looking for this since, well you know what happened. If you missed this clip before it was deleted. Then check it out now! This is the last episode of Bobby Darin's TV show. So he put on a heck of show, typical Bobby Darin to give it all even when he was dying. Darin was a tough guy no doubt about it!

Otis Redding, Eric Burdon And Chris Farlow: Shake

Cool video of Otis Redding in England with a couple british blues singers. Eric Burdon who was the singer for the Animals, and Chris Farlow who had a huge hit in Britain with T-Bone Walker's Stormy Monday. Of course Otis steals the show:-)

Beatles: Sgt Pepper

Last year I posted this video in tribute to the 40th anniversary of Sgt Pepper. Unfortunately the video disappeared, but I found it again:-) I love the idea that music can cure the ills of the world. In this video from the movie Yellow Submarine the Beatles take on the blue meanies! Pretty cool and psychedelic!!!

Platters: Only You

The Platters huge hit in the 50s, which is one of the classic recordings of the Rock and Roll era.

Sonny Terry And Browine McGhee: Burnt Child

Classic Sonny Terry and Browine McGhee.

Upcoming Reviews And I AM NOT SPAM!!!!

Just received in the good old fashioned snail mail a couple of cool items to review. First from Delmark records is a DVD Dave Specter Live In Chicago. The DVD also features Jimmy Johnson, Tad Robinson, and Sharon Lewis. I also received a CD from Miles High Productions of Mike Zito's new disc Today. Both discs look pretty cool so hopefully I can get to them this weekend and have a review for you by next week.

Finally, for some reason the bots that patrol blogger think that my blog is a spam blog. I have no clue why these clueless programs have picked on me, but it makes posting a real pain in the neck. They have these series of letters that many of you have no doubt run across, that you need to type in to post your post, but these are hard to read. It usually takes me three attempts before I can finally post. It is very frustrating. So I am a bit angry at the whole process and hopefully blogger will get a real person to look at my blog and lift the lock. AAAAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!

Honeydripper Review, And The Problems Of Distribution Of Indie Films

John Sayles cool movie, Honeydripper, about the blues and early rock and roll is featured in a nice article in Best Of New Orleans website (click here to read) What makes this a cool story is that the article tells the tale of Guitar Slim, and how he fits into the the movie. The article also covers how hard it is for an indie film to get into theaters. To see the movie in the few places still showing it Click HERE. It looks like I will have to wait until it makes it to DVD to give you a review, because the closest showing is in Kansas City. However, if you are interested and have a school group, or a blues society and would like to show the film go to the Honeydripper website and contact the good people there, because they will show the film for your group.

Artist Of The Week: Stevie Wonder

This weeks artist is Stevie Wonder. Stevie was the great soul singer from the 60s and 70s, and still today can wow an audience. Plus every great blues band today has at one time or anther covered Stevie's monster hit Superstition. Stevie is currently campaigning for Senator Obama, and apparently took a fall the other day. Apparently he is alright, but it must have been pretty scary to see. To watch him in action check out the videos powered by Youtube on the left side of the blog.

Photo Of The Week

The Photo of the week is one of our many lighthouses located in Storm Lake. This one is on the camp grounds of the Boy Scouts. It is just west of our campus. Since summer vacation is coming on quick for me. (another two and a half weeks!) Then I will be done until August! My plan this summer was to travel and check out some of the great blues fests around the area, but thanks to George Bush's wonderful economic plans I am stuck here. 4 Dollar gas, is way to much for me to be tooling around the Midwest. I have even canceled plans to go Chicago. This sucks!!! BTW, I know that many people think that getting rid of the gas tax is going to help. Trust me on this folks, back when gas was around a dollar the tax was too high, but now federal gas tax won't make a dent in your gas bill if they take it away. So I will probably base myself in Des Moines for most of the summer. Try to pick up a few gigs, and take some classes. Maybe if a mircle happens and gas prices go down, then perhaps I could make it to Kansas City or Mississippi Valley for their blues fest. Wishful thinking I know:-)
