- Louisina Red Memorial Tribute acknowledgements: On the afternoon of Friday,May11, which was the day after theBMAs, a highly successful memorial tribute to the late blues legendLouisiana Red took place at theHard Rock Cafe on Beale Street in Memphis. In a 4 hour period that day over 50 top blues musicians performed. All proceeds went toGeneration Blues, theBlues Foundation's educational fund, a cause thatLouisiana Red would have fully endorsed. SinceLouisiana Red had lived in Germany for the last 30 years of his life, and his funeral was understandably held in Hannover, this event served as the only US memorial accessible to the many people who loved this great man.The lineup included host band Bob Margolin,Bob Corritore,David Maxwell,Willie J. Thanks to the Hard Rock Cafefor providing a spectacular, smoke free venue with great sound and backline. And, of course, thanks toGeneration Blues for their most noble mission of blues education. During the course of the show, I called Red's wife Dora in Germany who was not able to attend the event. I held the phone up as I instructed the crowd to applaud Red and there was an overwhelming roar that Dora was able to hear. That night I called Dora again to give her a detailed rundown of the event. She wanted me to pass on her gratefulness that we were able to pay tribute to her late husband. Thanks everyone for givingLouisiana Red the musical memorial that he so rightly deserved.

- Little Walter,Baby Face Leroy,Muddy Waters unissued Parkway alternate takes released!Louis Records from the UK has recently issued two limited edition collector's 45rpm vinyl records of great interest to fans of classic Chicago blues. In 1950Parkway Records produced a session featuring the amazing trio ofLittle Walter,Baby Face Leroy andMuddy Waters. Most of these have been reissued onDelmark Records compilation called The Blues World of Little Walter. But low and behold, thanks to UK blues artist and collectorBig Joe Louis and hisLouis Records, we are now treated to some previously unheard material from this historic session, . One single features previously unreleased alternate takes ofLittle Walter's "Just keep Lovin' Her" andBaby Face Leroy's "Boll Weevil". A second single features extended versions, without fade outs of parts 1 and 2 ofBaby Face Leroy classic version of "Rollin' and Tumblin" with the amazing harmony of Leroy, Walter, and Muddy all moaning the melody line! Bob Dorr And The Blue Band Update
How many Genarians do we have here tonight?? It's Sex-A-Genarian Summer! Sex me baby...This is gonna be fun...
Saturday night we're playing a wedding celebration for a family that has been following our band for 20+ years. Because his parents have been Blue People for so long, the groom has literally grown up with us. It's always fun to be part of these multi-generational gatherings of Blue People. Congrats Jeff and Brenda!...
And Sunday is the kick-off to Sex-A-Genarian Summer, on the bank of the Wapsipinicon River, in the beer garden of FB & Co. in beautiful downtown Wabeek IA. (about 20 minutes NE of Cedar Rapids) If we could get 200 people to stop out, we'd more than double the population of Waubeek! Over the years, we have played seven different stage locations on the FB grounds (ok, the details of those first 20 years of Memorial Day blowouts are a little sketchy, but I'm pretty sure there were seven locations including the ball field, the "community center", which was scary because there were so many people in that little building that, standing on stage, I could literally see the floor bouncing up and down by inches! (that building has since been demolished) We've also played both stages that are out there now, The Whittier Community Center (5 miles south of Waubeek) the original "on the ground on the ledge" stage and the little stage in the bar) (hmmm, I think we set up on the deck of the bar one year too. Do you remember any other stage locations for this event?) Also, for years, this summer kick-off was on Memorial Day Monday. Because us Genarians need a little more "recovery time" it's now on the Sunday before the holiday. Iowa Rock'n'Roll Hall of Famers The Mississippi Band start the music at 2:30p, The Blue Band at about 5:30p and we'll play til dark. An added highlight for me will be that Al is going to bring out the trumpet, giving us a THREE piece horn section! Oh yeah, baby. There's nothin' like a horny Sex-A-Genarian! Now if someone could just bring CAKE, I just might reach nirvana! (do you know how hard that is for a man my age to reach?) If you need more info, the phone number at FB & Co is 319-438-6582...
Some cool shows coming up next week too. Friday June 1 we're part of the Art Walk celebration in the downtown square in Fairfield, 7:30-10pm and Sunday June 3 we return to THE TROLL CAPITOL OF THE WORLD!! (their words, not mine) Mt. Horeb Wisconsin's Summer Frolic, 4-7pm, which is always topped off by host Mark Webber singing Not Me with the band. I guess that means we'll be playing for anyone from levitators to cheese heads next week! I TOLD you this was gonna be fun. And speaking of fun, do you have your tickets for the annual Riverboat Ride in Dubuque? I was told that ticket sales picked up after last week's reminder, so get your tickets soon. In case you did not stop by the Post-a-Note page or my Facebook page, Sam Salomone's wife says that Sam has improved enough to be moved from the ICU to a regular hospital bed, but is not out of the woods yet. However, she finds it encouraging that his cantankerous attitude is returning! I check in with her every few days and will post what I know. Keep vibin' for the B3 player...

We'll have some with us this weekend (even tho' the "official" release date isn't until next Tuesday) (I have no idea why the music industry officially releases new records on Tuesdays, do you?) Tour shirt + CD = $20. Get the new CD and any other back catalog CD/DVD for $15! How do we do it? VOLUME!!...
See yas on the Holiday Blue Highway, rub yer washboard to the tune of The Summer Time Blues, remember that the reason for the 3-day weekend is for remembrance of those who gave their lives for our freedoms, don't drink and drive (call yourself a cab) (YOU'RE A CAB!!) and always know that we love you. Hello again, I am sending an email update for members and friends of the South Skunk Blues Society.
Congratulations to The Pain Killers, winners of the 2012 Iowa Blues Challenge Band competition held last Saturday May 26th at the Downtown Marriott in Des Moines. Newton native Jeff Banks is the lead guitar player for this group. See attached press release.
Solo Duo Call for Acts: The South Skunk Blues Society is one of the co-sponsors for the Iowa Solo Duo competition. I have attached the “Call” (announcement) to this email. Last year this competition was won by Bryce Janey. As noted earlier the Pain Killers won the 2012 band competition, this is the solo duo part of the competition; for a solo act or a duo act. The deadline for registering is July 15th, 2012. The Solo/Duo Challenge will be held August 26, 2012 at Zimm’s in Des Moines, IA. Feel free to let others know about this competition.
The Pinetop Perkins Foundation Youth Workshop Series Guitar Masterclass: I am very proud to announce that my 12 year old grandson, Brady Geilenfeldt, has been awarded scholarships to attend the Youth Guitar Workshop in Clarksdale, Mississippi June 12-15. I will accompany him to Clarksdale where he will learn, with twelve other youth ages 12-21, about playing the blues on the guitar from Muddy Waters former guitar player Bob Margolin. http://www.pinetopperkinsfoundation.org/masterclass12.html The scholarships are made available by the Pinetop Perkins Foundation and the Blues Foundation Generation Blues Program http://www.blues.org/#ref=generation_programs Brady is thrilled with this opportunity and so am I! This is part of what he wrote when he applied for the grants: ...“ My grandpa is trying to keep the blues alive in Jasper County, IA; he is the president of the South Skunk Blues Society and this workshop would be a way for me to help him with that. I want to learn to play more songs, learn how to get different sounds to come out of my guitar, and learn different rhythms. I also want to learn more chords and how to play blues music. I want to attend the workshop in Clarksdale because it is the home of the blues.”...
South Skunk meeting: The next South Skunk meeting is Monday June 4th at 6:30 PM at the VFW in Newton. We have changed the dates and times for our meetings and will be meeting the first Monday of each month at 6:30 PM at the VFW in Newton. Hope to see some of you there.
