BJFMS UPDATE
HERE’S MUSIC NEWS YOU CAN USE from The Voice
FIRST EDITION ____________________________________________January 6, 2009
The BJFMS UPDATE is back. Just about every week (or so) you’ll be getting a little something in your inbox from the BJFM VOICE which will include everything WE know about what’s going on with LIVE MUSIC here and around here. That is, unless we hear from you that you want us to STOP, in which case we will take your name and email OFF the list – just reply with “STOP.” Otherwise, just be patient and give us a little while to get this thing up and running. On the other hand, if you know anyone who would appreciate getting this information, just email me and we’ll ADD their name and email address to the list. I really want to be just the EDITOR of all the stuff YOU, the MUSIC PEOPLE (and you KNOW who you are) send me to include here. I’m L@@KING for NEWS of WHO’S PLAYING WHERE, REVIEWS of any LIVE music, CD and MUSIC DVD REVIEWS, FESTIVAL REVIEWS, whatever YOU think the MUSIC PEOPLE would want to hear about. EMAIL any and all to: bluesphotog@gmail.com Don’t be shy.
Well, HERE GOES>>>
GOOD ADVICE
Robert Huges and Teeny Tucker of The Teeny Tucker Band sent me this:
Thelonious Monk's Advice 1960
Just because you’re not a drummer, doesn’t mean that you don’t have to keep time.
Pat your foot and sing the melody in your head when you play.
Stop playing all those bullshit notes.
Make the drummer sound good.
You’ve got to dig it, to dig it, you dig?
All reet.
Always know …
It must be night, otherwise they wouldn’t need the lights.
Let’s lift the bandstand, I want to avoid the hecklers!
Don’t play the piano part, I’m playing that.
Don’t listen to me, I’m supposed to accompanying you.
Don’t play everything, let some things go by.
Some music is just imagined.
What you don’t play can be more important than what you do play.
A note can be as small as a pin or as big as the world, it depends on your imagination.
Stay in shape! (When the gig comes, you have to make it.)
When you’re swinging, swing some more.
What should we wear tonight? Be as sharp as possible.
Always leave them wanting more.
These tunes were written so as to have something to play, and to get cats interested enough to come to rehearsal.
Whatever you think can’t be done, somebody will come along and do it.
A genius is the one most like himself.
They tried to get me to hate white people, but someone would always come along and spoil it!
Best wishes for a Happy,
and ...
Prosperous New Year!
all the best, Robert & Teeny

Ist THINGS FIRST – THE IMPORTANT STUFF >> IMPORTANT PLEASE READ
“MEMPHIS OR BUST” BENEFIT
One of Columbus’ best blues bands and one of Cleveland’s most popular acoustic blues musicians will perform a special benefit concert in Marietta THIS SATURDAY for one of their favorite charities: themselves.
Mojo Theory from Columbus and Austin “Walkin’ Cane” Charanghat from Cleveland, both winners at The Blues, Jazz & Folk Music Society’s (BJFMS) annual River City Ohio Blues Competition last February will be performing at the “Memphis or Bust” benefit to help send them to compete in the 2009 International Blues Challenge (IBC), in Memphis, Tennessee. The “Memphis or Bust” Benefit will be held THIS SATURDAY, January 10, 2009 at The River City Tavern & Grill, in the Comfort Inn, on the pike, in Marietta. Music starts at 8PM. Admission at the door will be $10. There is no advance ticket sales for this event.
When they won back in February, Mojo Theory won the $1,000 first prize, but, as you can imagine, in these times it takes a lot more than that to send a
5-piece band to Memphis for four or five days. Austin “Walkin’ Cane” won only the $100 prize, so you know he needs help. Blues societies all over the country are holding “Memphis of Bust” Benefits to help out, with hopes of bringing home a winner for big time bragging rights.
“We hope everybody comes out to support live music and the blues,” said John Gifford, Competition Director for the BJFMS. “It’s going to be a great blues show you wouldn’t normally be able to see around here. Both musical acts will have their latest CD’s for sale and autograph, along with a 50/50 drawing and all donations will go to support these guys,” said Gifford.
The International Blues Challenge is presented by The Blues Foundation in early February each year.
The IBC is the undisputed largest gathering of blues bands in the world – last year’s Challenge saw over 100 blues bands and 60 solo/duo acts competing live on world famous Beale Street. The 25th annual IBC will take place February 4-7, 2009 in Memphis.
“The IBC is a great opportunity for these serious blues musicians to gain valuable exposure and further their careers. We want to help them all we can, and getting to Memphis is half the battle,” added Gifford.
“The River City Taven & Grill seats over 300 people, and we need everybody who supports LIVE MUSIC out for this show. River City Tavern & Grill is a new venue for us: we want to IMPRESS them so they’ll want to have us back again. We need YOU to make it a PRIORITY to come out and support this event. This venue can offer tremendous opportunities for us IF we get a big crowd here for SATURDAY night. Please BE THERE if you can.
RIVER CITY OHIO BLUES COMPETITION

INTERNATIONAL BLUES CHALLENGE (IBC) UP SOON
If you’re planning to head to Memphis, TN February 4-7 for the IBC – the undisputed largest gathering of blues bands in the WORLD and the “Disneyland of Blues” better have your plans already set or get it done in the next few days. The hotels are pretty full already, so accommodations will be slim pickin’s the closer we get to the competition. The trip is highly recommended if you’re a serious blues fan, or if you’re just a serious partyer – either way, you’ll never forget it and be hooked like the rest of us. Trust me, you’ve never seen any festival or anything else like it. Go to www.blues.org for all the details and to buy tickets.

Blues Foundation members will be able to vote starting today, through March 1, with the results determining the winners. Click here to vote.
West coast-based group The Mannish Boys lead the pack this year with six nominations, including band, traditional album and album of the year in addition to individual nominations for band members Richard Innes (drums), Kid Ramos (guitar), and Larry Taylor (bass). Tied with four nominations each are slide guitar legend Elvin Bishop, pianist Eden Brent, songstress Janiva Magness, soul man Curtis Salgado, and former truck driver Watermelon Slim. Buddy Guy is nominated for three awards and B.B. King for two.
The Mississippi-based Homemade Jamz Blues Band are the youngest nominees at 9, 14, and 16 years of age. Sadly, Sean Costello received two posthumous nominations while Jeff Healey received one. Chicago elder statesman and torch bearer Magic Slim earned three nods. Lurrie Bell earned two nominations for an album he made while grieving the loss of his wife and his father, harp man Carrie Bell.
The Blues Foundation has added a Rock Blues category for the first time in 2009, with nominations going to Gary Moore, Jeff Healey, Michael Burks, Smokin' Joe Kubek & Bnois King, Sonny Landreth, and Walter Trout.
The presenting sponsor for the 2008 Blues Music Awards was once again The GIBSON Foundation. The 2008 Blues Music Awards were also sponsored by BMI, Casey Family Programs, Eagle Rock Entertainment, FedEx, Legendary Rhythm & Blues Cruise and the Sierra Nevada Brewing Company.
Performers have not yet been confirmed for the 2009 show but all nominees are invited to take the stage, showing a broad range of blues styles from solo resonator fingerpicking to soul-blues shouters. For the blues fan, it's the only way to see a lineup like this and it annually threatens to rage well into the night.
The awards ceremony and concert will be broadcast live by Sirius XM Satellite Radio's B.B. King's Bluesville channel. The Blues Music Awards will be shot in HD for a DVD to be released in the fall of 2009.
The Blues Foundation has 3,000 individual dues-paying members around the world and 160 affiliated grassroots, member-based local blues societies in a dozen countries.

Finally, my friend Herb Sollars sent me this:
In a few short days, an African American man will move from his private residence into a much larger and infinitely more expensive one, owned not by him, but by the taxpayers. A vast lawn, a perimeter fence and many well trained security specialists will insulate him from the rest of us, but the mere fact that this man will be residing in this house should make us all stop and count or blessings - because it proves that we live in a nation where anything is possible. Many believed this day would never come. Most of us hoped and prayed that it would, but few of us actually believed we would live to see it. Racism is an ugly thing in all of it's forms and there is little doubt that if this man had moved into this house fifteen years ago, there would have been a great outcry - possibly even rioting in the streets. Today, we can all be both grateful and proud that no such mayhem will take place.when this man takes up residency in this house.
This man, moving into this house at this time in our nation's history is much more than a simple change of addresses for him - it is proof of a change in our attitude as a nation. It is an amends of sorts - the righting of a great wrong. It is a symbol of our growth, and of our willingness to "judge a man, not by the color of his skin but by the content of his character". There can be little doubt now that the vast majority of us truly believe that this man has earned both his place in history and his new address. His time in this house will not be easy - it will be fraught with danger and he will face many challenges. I am sure there will be many times when he asks himself how in the world he ended up here and like all who have gone before him, the experience will age him greatly. But I for one will not waste an ounce of worry for his sake - because in every way a man can, he asked for this. His whole life for the past fifteen years appears to have been inexorably leading this man toward this house. It is highly probable that that in the past, despite all of his actions, racism would have kept this man out of this house. Today, I thank the lord above that I am an American and that I live in a nation where wrongs are righted, where justice matters and where truly anything is possible.
I couln’t agree more.

17th Annual River City Ohio Blues Competition
The Blues, Jazz & Folk Music Society of Marietta, Ohio announce their 17th annual
River City Ohio Blues Competition, the oldest and largest blues talent competition
in the state of Ohio. Last year's competition saw 18 great blues acts from all over
Ohio, West Virginia, Michigan and Pennsylvania compete for sponsorship to the
International Blues Challenge ( IBC), and this year we are expecting to showcase
an increasing amount of quality regional blues talent. A full roster of 18 blues
acts competed last year with a close finish. Last year's first place winner is Mojo
Theory from Columbus Ohio. Austin "Walkin' Cane" also placed and so will represent
BJFM in Memphis in 2009.
The first place winner of The River City Ohio Blues Competition will receive $1000
dollars in cash and BJFM sponsorship to the International Blues Challenge in Memphis
early in 2010 where they can gain valuable exposure to record label A&R
representatives and Blues industry professionals and festival promoters capable of
providing real career advancement for a serious blues musician. The second place
winner will receive $200 in cash and the third place winner will receive $100 in
cash. This year, again there will be 18 slots in competition. The big winners,
however, are the blues fans who enjoy a weekend of great blues entertainment rarely
available in Southeast Ohio at a bargain price.
Marietta, being the oldest Blues competition in Ohio has,you might say, set the
stage for the half dozen or so competitions that now exist in the state. One of the
things that makes the Marietta competition unique is that it has no geographic
restrictions and is open to serious Blues acts from anywhere. That is why The River
City Ohio Blues Competition pulls talent from a four, five or six state area and
even from overseas all hoping to win in Marietta and get their ticket punched to
Memphis. The Blues is an attitude and state of mind, not an address -- not confined
to any geographical area. Our Ohio affiliate blues societies have been
well-represented at The International Blues Challenge(s) (IBC) in Memphis. In just
the last few years, there have been several top-ten finishers and winners from the
state of Ohio. The level of talent in the IBC has risen to incredible heights from
the blues acts from all over the country (and the world) and so has the level of
talent from Ohio. Good Blues music seems to be coming from everywhere and
Ohio is no exception. Blues acts from Ohio have been top winners in both the
Solo/Duo Blues category (2006/2nd) and the Band Category (2007/1st) in recent years.
FOR BANDS WHO WANT TO PARTICIPATE: Go to

bluesphotog@gmail.com Chicago's Chico Banks Plays Marietta The Blues, Jazz &
Folk Music Society present their Second Annual "Chicago Blues Party" on Friday,
November 21, 2008 at The Lafayette Hotel, 101 Front Street, in downtown
Marietta. This year's featured performers will be The Chico Banks Blues Band
with special guest Toronzo Cannon from Chicago. The Chicago blues starts at
8:30pm, and admission is $15 for BJFM Society members, $20 for non-members. All
tickets available at the door. No advance ticket sales for this show. Chico
Banks comes from a musical family; His dad and brother used to practice in the
basement when he was just a kid. Chico joined his first Top 40 band at the age
of 13, and before he knew it, he was backing Johnny Christian, along with his
brother. After Johnny, Chico played with Otis Clay, then moved on when he got
the chance to play with Buddy Guy for several tours. After that, he toured with
Junior Wells, and then James Cotton for three years. Over the next few years,
Chico played with almost everyone in Chicago, including Little Milton, Magic
Slim, Big Time Sarah and Tyronne Davis. In 1997, he hooked up with Mavis
Staples, and has done may tours throughout the world with Mavis, as well as The
Staples Singers. Special guest for the "Chicago Blues Party" will be Toronzo
Cannon, who is a show all by himself. Blues & Rhythm (UK) says: "Modern,
loud and funky blues…one of the striking new talents on the Chicago blues
scene…Cannon dazzles with his guitar playing." Since the release of Toronzo's
latest album, My Woman, he has been tearing up the stage and exciting crowds
from Chicago to the Balkins. At the core of Toronzo's appeal is his heartfelt
love for the music, whether it is blues, soul, gospel, jazz or rock – all of
which may creep into his show, and his respect for the audience. "If he doesn't
leave them sweatin' and smilin' he feels he hasn't done his job," said Banks

*IS' FUN Y'ALL, BUT......-

crawlinkingsnake is stepping down as writer, researcher, mis-speller,
chief cook and bottle washer of the BJFM "Blues Triangle" Update. Its been a
fun 4 years. Began this thing back in Oct 2004 when I shot my mouth off while
chattin with some folks out on the back porch... never dreamed it would create
the interest or last as long as it did. Really hope somebody will pick up the ball
and run with it from this day forward... but due to too-many-irons-in-the-fire,
this must happen. Not exactly sure just what's gonna go on in the future with
Update or crawlinkingsnake... will probably continue in some capacity with the
WVBluesSociety (as is happening right now) or as independent. So for now, if you
would like to continue to receive any future crawlinkingsnake bs, please contact
the West Virginia Blues Society website at http://wvbluessociety.org.
Thanks y'all for all the positive, negative and/or indifferent feedback in the
past... check out the WVBluesSociety "Mountains of Blues", continue to support

guest Toronzo Cannon from Chicago. The Chicago blues starts at 8:30pm, and
admission is $15 for BJFM Society members, $20 for non-members. All tickets
available at the door. No advance ticket sales for this show.
Chico Banks comes from a musical family; His dad and brother used to practice in
the basement when he was just a kid. Chico joined his first Top 40 band at the
age of 13, and before he knew it, he was backing Johnny Christian, along with
his brother. After Johnny, Chico played with Otis Clay, then moved on when he
got the chance to play with Buddy Guy for several tours. After that, he toured
with Junior Wells, and then James Cotton for three years. Over the next few years,
Chico played with almost everyone in Chicago, including Little Milton, Magic Slim,
Big Time Sarah and Tyronne Davis. In 1997, he hooked up with Mavis Staples, and
has done may tours throughout the world with Mavis, as well as The Staples Singers.
Special guest for the "Chicago Blues Party" will be Toronzo Cannon, who is a show
all by himself. Blues & Rhythm (UK) says: "Modern, loud and funky blues…one of
the striking new talents on the Chicago blues scene…Cannon dazzles with his guitar
playing." Since the release of Toronzo's latest album, My Woman, he has been
tearing up the stage and exciting crowds from Chicago to the Balkins. At the
core of Toronzo's appeal is his heartfelt love for the music, whether it is blues,
soul, gospel, jazz or rock – all of which may creep into his show, and his respect
for the audience. "If he doesn't leave them sweatin' and smilin' he feels he hasn't
done his job," said Banks

WHATS HAPPENIN'*
****************
*FATHER OF THE DELTA BLUES-
Did a little listening to, reading about and checking on, EDDIE JAMES "SON" HOUSE
few days back. With very little checking, it was evident he has been over looked
for a long-long time. Son House, born Mar 21, 1902 - died Oct 19, 1988 is sometimes
called the "Father of the Delta Blues". He often played with CHARLEY PATTON and
WILLIE BROWN, and was a major influence on ROBERT JOHNSON and MUDDY WATERS. First
information came across said that he was born in Riverton, MS. So was curious if
there was anything left of his birthplace. Found out that Riverton is not actually
a town, but instead a "neighborhood" in Clarksdale. Located across the Sunflower
River from downtown and north of South State St has to be very near the site where
IKE TURNER was born. Generally in the direction of Stovall Plantation but not that
far. As far as anything left in the way of a dwelling, no specific place has ever
been identified. In fact, some publications list either Riverton OR Lyon as possible
birthplace locations. Lyon, a small community of 300 to 400 people is located just
northeast of Clarksdale. Roger Stolle tells us he feels he was born at a long gone
plantation shack on the outskirts of Clarksdale. One thing about Lyon & Son House
does seem certain... While playing a house party there one night, he shot and
killed a man and was sentenced to prison. However, he only served two years in
Parchman Farm. His parents worked hard for his release arguing it was self defense.
A Clarksdale judge released him and he was orderd never to enter town again. He
was soon traveling through out the Delta region playing music. Son had gone
from a young Baptist minister to a full-fledged bluesman. He recorded for
Paramount and for Alan Lomax in the 1930's and 40's, After that he disapeared
until the 1960's. His re-discovery in Rochester, NY by DICK WATERMAN, NICK PERLS
and PHIL SPIRO is quite story by itself! Something that we could never do justice
to here.
He is buried in Mt Hazel Cemetery, Detroit, MI and there is a permanent sidewalk
"Walk of Fame" marker in front of Cat Head Delta Blues in Clarksdale. Check out

*NO COMPUTER, NO CASH REGISTER, NO PROBLEM!-
This is the 2nd article on this particular subject in past couple months... but
it's one of our favorites so here goes...
Another nice conversation with Bubba Sullivan of "Bubba's Blues Corner" Helena,
AR last week. And we're happy to report he tells us he's having a very good year
(and it ain't even King Biscuit time yet!). One of the places we always stop into;
along with Roger Stolle's Cat Head Delta Blues whenever we're in the area. Was
last there in April during Juke Joint Festival. Bubba runs one of "the finest"
record/music stores anywhere in the country and he still does it without certain
luxuries most of us take for granted everyday. He will do mail order and will
take credit cards, but does not have a computer; which of course means no website,
and also does not use a cash register! However, rest assured if you want something,
he's got it or will get it for you real quick. He's in the process of sending me a
SON HOUSE recording right now. Also Bubba informed us that he has come across a
"huge" collection of old vinyl recording... not necessarly all blues, but
everything you can imagine in 33, 45 and 78 rpm's. Came to him via Arizona to
Mississippi and finally to his shop in Arkansas. In excellent condition
(some mint condition) and are in the process of trying to inventory and price
each one. A writer in Nashville recently wrote an article about the closing up
of all the small locally owned record shops... Bubba talked with him and said he
was doing just fine and has customers from all over the country and world! He
then invited the writer to come see for himself. He's yet to show up. Also he
said that ABC's "Good Morning America" plans to air a show filmed in Helena very
soon. Even though he and his shop won't be on, still to keep an eye out for it.
Seems they were in and out of town before he even knew anything about the filming.
Ain't dat just how things normally go... the good stuff always gets over looked.
Good talking with you Bubba... and hope all continues to go well... and of course,
most of all, hope to get down your way again 'fore too long.
If you or someone you know is going to Arkansas Blues & Heritage Fest next week
(Oct 9-10-11) be sure to stop into Bubbas Blues Corner. Located at 105 Cherry St,
about 25 strides off the main stage in Helena. Also you can contact Bubba Sullivan
at Bus: 870-338-3501, Cell: 870-995-1326 or Fax: 870-338-3921 and tell him we
sent y'all!

BILLY PRICE (http://www.billyprice.com/index.php) testified and more Saturday
afternoon in Morgantown. The West Virginia Wine & Jazz Festival
(http://www.wvwineandjazz.com/index.htm) as good as what we were told, and more.
This was Spider, Queen Biscuit, Mojo Mama and crawlinkingsnake first time and it
was great. Very well organized and operated. Been doing this for awhile and they're
getting it right. Lots of WVU students present. Quote Spider: "quite moving
to see so many young people groovin' to Billy." We's there mainly to see
Billy Price but were glad we got there early enough to catch others. Before BP,
the DWAYNE DOLPHIN BAND (http://www.dwaynedolphinmusic.com/home.html) from
Pittsburgh had an excellent set. 4-H Camp Muffley is a beautiful setting but if
yer late, you will do some walking. Stage and food/wine vendors were up the
holler a ways. Good to see John of "ink" (http://www.inkwv.com), Jim of Lambert's
Winery (http://www.lambertsvintagewine.com) as well as couple old FSC animal
house an-tekes, "Hambone and "Germ". Add this to yer '09 calendar.
<>"LITTLE WALTER TRIBUTE"-
Marion Walter Jacobs aka "LITTLE WALTER"
(http://physics.lunet.edu/blues/Little_Walter.html) is generally considered one
of the best blues musicians ever. Revolutionary harmonica techniques earned him
comparisons to Charlie Parker and Jimi Hendrix in its impact. Born in Marksville,
LA May 1st 1930. He quit school at 12 to travel and play the streets of New Orleans,
Memphis, Helena and St Louis while honing his skills with SONNY BOY WILLIAMSON II
and BIG BILL BROONZY. He played with MUDDY WATERS in Chicago during the late 40's
and 50's. He recorded as a band leader for Chess Records when his song "Juke"
became the first harmonica instrumental to reach #1 on R&B charts in 1952. Later
"My Babe" reached #1 in 1955. Walter also frequently played as a sideman with such
greats as JIMMY ROGERS, MEMPHIS MINNIE, JOHNNY SHINES, BO DIDDLEY, OTIS RUSH,
ROBERT NIGHTHAWK and others. He suffered as an alcoholic and had a notorious
short temper, Which led to his decline. Little Walter died Feb 15th 1968 in his
sleep from injuries sustained from a fight outside a club in South Side Chicago.
His playing influenced nearly every modern blues harp player that followed from
JUNIOR WELLS to WILLIAM CLARKE and JAMES HARMAN to ROD PIAZZA and pert-near all
those in between. The 1952 instrumental "Juke" was inducted into the Grammy Awards
Hall-of-Fame in 2007.
The "Little Walter Tribute" will be in Pomeroy, Ohio at the Court Street Grill
on Friday Sept 19th. Yeah I know what you're saying... cks is off-the-wall when
it comes to blues harp. Well, excuuuuse me... I'm gonna tell ya this just one
time... If you're going to be anywhere within shoutin' distance... make the effort
to see this show. Two great harp players in their own right, DENNIS GRUENLING
(http://dennisgruenling.com) and STEVE GUYGER (http://www.steveguyger.com)
are backed by great guitarist DOUG DEMING (http://www.dougdeming.com). They have
collaborated and traveled the country all summer with their tribute to
"Little Walter." Recently at The Thunderbird Cafe in Pittsburgh two weeks ago.
At The Slippery Noodle in Indianapolis Tuesday the 16th and Brackins Blues Bar in
Maryville, TN the 18th before arriving in Pomeroy. After that it's off to some
foreign country somewhere before coming back to Williamsburg, VA early next month.
So take advantage of this opportunity while you can. And as we "grillers" all
know, The Court Street Grill (http://www.courtstreetgrill.com) is a very special
place. See all you harp fans there............

<>"M FOR MISSISSIPPI"-
"We planned this road-trip movie for two years. We avoided big concert stages
and rock-star narrators in favor of intimate houseparties and rockin' Delta
juke joints. The results speak for themselves." quote Roger Stolle.
A new film celebrating the raw, raucous spirit of Mississippi's surviving
Blues scene... worldwide premiere Sat Oct 11th at the Delta Cinema in downtown
Clarksdale. "M for Mississippi: A Road Trip through the Birthplace of the Blues"

Art and Jeff Konkel- Broke & Hungry Records) on a weeklong journey across
Mississippi visiting a dozen of the state's most fascinating Blues figures in
rustic environments ranging from juke joints to cotton fields... follows Konkel
and Stolle traveling dusty highways and byways, calling on such seminal regional
Blues figures as James "T-Model" Ford, Robert "Wolfman" Belfour, Terry "Harmonica"
Bean, Wesley "Junebug" Jefferson, Jimmy "Duck" Holmes, Pat Thomas, L.C. Ulmer,
Robert "Bilbo" Walker, and more... shines a long-overdue spotlight on these men,
their music and the land from which the Blues sprang.

Blue Triangle Update
BLUES TRIANGLE UPDATE- Thursday Sept 11th, 2008
Sit there, count your fingers.
What else, what else is there to do?
Oh and I know how you feel,
I know you feel that you’re through.
Oh wah ah sit there, hmm, count,
Ah, count your little fingers,
My unhappy oh little girl, little girl blue...
JANIS JOPLIN- "Little Girl Blue"/I GOT DEM OL' KOZMIC BLUES AGAIN MAMA!, 9/11/69

*WHATS HAPPENIN':

*REMEMBERING JANIS JOPLIN-
Sept 11th will always be remembered as a tragic day in American history... However
this Thursday (9/11) also marks thirty-nine years ago since the release of
"I Got Dem Ol' Kozmic Blues Again Mama"... released by JANIS LYN JOPLIN in 1969
for Columbia Records. Can remember buying my vinyl copy in the bookstore at
Fairmont State during the fall of that year... about one year before she died.
On Saturday Oct 4th 1970, the day of the Appalachian Blues Competition, will be
thirty-eight years since she was discovered at the Landmark Motor Hotel in
Los Angeles dead of a herion overdose. Janis was born Jan 19th, 1943 in
Port Arthur, TX. She credited Aretha Franklin, Tina Turner, Leadbelly, Odetta,
Bessie Smith, Big Mama Thornton, Otis Redding and Billie Holiday to be her
biggest influences. She was described as not being happy as a child.
While a teenager she listened to many recordings of blues artists that
she later credited with influencing her decision to become a singer. Even
though "Pearl" still receives the most acolades of all her albums, personally
my favorite is still "Kozmic Blues".
QUOTES:
<>"Loyalists to Janis' first band BIG BROTHER & THE HOLDING COMPANY were
determined to hate KOZMIC BLUES BAND. However, Kozmic Blues is indeed her most
underrated effort."- Myra Friedman (Janis' 1st biographer).
<>"The greatest white blues singer of her time..."- Anthony DeCurtis (Rolling Stone).
<>"I hesitate to call this ("PEARL") one of her "best" because I like all of the
others so much."- Danny Goldberg (Circus).
<>"Janis Joplin made the blues her own."- Amazon.com/Editorial Review.
*CROSSROADS HOTEL & ENTERTAINMENT COMPLEX-
You knew it was bound to happen... just a matter of time. Announced last week,
the Crossroads Hotel & Entertainment Complex and The Robert Johnson Crossroads
Blues Legend Garden (http://www.crossroadshotel.tv) will be built adjacent to
the “crossroads” at the intersection of Highway 61 and 49 in Clarksdale, MS.
Plans for a reasonably priced world class resort offering the very best in
Southern charm and hospitality with theme rooms such as The Muddy Waters,
The Bessie Smith, The Robert Johnson room and more.
And now of course, questions are gonna be ask... Is this needed? Will it
help or harm the small businesses (aka Wal-Mart syndrome)? Will it work to
change the culture? Will it take away from the very thing Clarksdale and
"the Delta" is famous for? ...Time will tell... One of the many reasons
Mojo Mama and I have traveled to Clarksdale year after year is its uniqueness.
Beautifully plain, simple, hot, flat and culturely rich... on the other hand, also
a depressed area that can use the help something like this could bring. Here's
hopeing it does just that while still preserving all the good things about
"the Delta". But it might be easier to find a room there now...? just hope they
don't bulldoze Anniebell's Lounge
(http://www.jukejointfestival.com/view_venue.php?venue_id=31)
or Abe's BBQ (http://www.abesbbq.com)!
*T-MODEL FORD (health update)-
Word is T-Model Ford was in good spirits at a fundraiser held for him in
Greenville, Mississippi two weeks ago on Aug 28th. Done to help him pay some
doctor bills... He has a newly installed pacemaker and is taking medication
(other than Jack Daniels) for blood clots. Held at the Walnut Street Blues Bar
(http://www.deltablues.net/bait.html) in Greenville and promoted by Mr Albert Folk;
it did attract a fair crowd and he did sell a few CD's added to a small cover
charge. T-Model was to go to the doctor on Thursday (9/4) and hopefully things
continue to work out well for him. (thanks Roger)
*REVIEW-
"Nudge It Up A Notch" by Steve Cropper/Felix Cavaliere (STAX RECORDS-7/29/08)
Man do I wish it was June 7th and school was just getting out for the summer,
why??? I just bought the new Cropper/Cavalier album and it feels like it is
time to be "groovin" the summer away. It is like listening to a lost Rascals album!
These guys are the last of the blue eyed soul poppers and they still know how to
do it. If you're like me, it never leaves the CD player in the car.-
(travelin'man'stan)
"...these 2 take from the old school upbringing they have and added nothing more
then experience, great writing and a hot R&B band with some great session musicians.
turn back the clock, school is in... make that old school...old school soul."-
(http://www.cduniverse.com). "Thank you Steve and Felix for a killer album!"-
(http://www.amazon.com)
Felix's vocals are outstanding. He definitly shines on trac #2/If It
Wasn't for Loving You, trac #3/Without You, and #6/Impossible. These are
classic 1967 "YOUNG RASCALS"... others, at least in my mind, lean more toward
some great Stax Memphis Soul with about the only thing missing perhaps being
some Donald "Duck" Dunn or Booker T & the M.G.'s... could have done without
#9/Make the Time Go Faster, but we'll give 'em one slip up... very cool album,
thanks Steve.-(crawlinkingsnake)

WHATS HAPPENIN'*

*CLOSE CALL-
Received from COLIN JOHN Tuesday Sept 2nd:
So, New Orleans was relatively spared another catostrophic blow when Hurricane
Gustav decided to calm down ever so slightly as to not destroy the fragile
levees protecting the city. The look of relief on Mayor Nagle's face- as well
as the sweat-stained shirt of George Bush- spoke volumes that things still
ain't right in the Big Easy, three years after Katrina.
A few weeks ago I caught the last half of Louisiana bluesman Tab Benoit's
set at The Thirsty Ear. Tab is a great musician and a resident and native
of Houma, Louisiana, a rural community that like many Gulf-coast communities
has still not recovered from Katrina. Tab was rather blunt and direct about
the lack of action being taken by the government and used colorful language
to get his points across, all of them valid and requiring attention. He's
not a raving lunatic; just a concerned and fed-up individual. Tab spearheads
an organization called The Wetlands Project and is immersed in educating people
about the fragile ecosystem that is The Gulf Coast.
His use of the words(and I'm leaving you to fill in the blanks as an exercise
in strengthinging your own Profanosaurus as well as to keep the spam filters
at bay), "motherfu___","ass___", etc. to get his point across made sense to
me. "Now, here's an intelligent man who is using profanity to convey his
message and is not coming across as a jackass entertainer using his public
platform to spout propaganda."
People swear so often these days that it's effectiveness has worn down to
the point that we usually think upon hearing profanity in public,"Well
that guy/girl has poor social etiquette and a limited vocabulary."
It's been said that, "profanity is the crutch of inarticulate mother______".
Well, not if used effectively like Tab was doing. It certainly can grab
attention and help initiate a call to action.
The close call that was Gustav's wrath this time is only a reminder that
the Gulf Coast is still extremely vulnerable.
Whatever your political stance may be, please keep ,in mind that for every
displaced useless____________criminal, there are far more decent humans
that don't need and can't afford to be_________up by an incompetent
administration.
Mother Nature doesn't play partisan politics, so to read about Tab's
organization and to get involved:

*QUOTE: "Much has changed in the world in three years. Some things
have gotten worse, like pop-music." GREG TUTWILER, publisher-
'Americana Rhythm - Music Magazine'
*HILLBILLY HIGHWAYS & VELVET ELVIS PAINTINGS-
In the early 1800's some of the first federal highways began to open up
areas west of the Appalachians. Slowly rough dirt roads like National Road,
The Northwest Turnpike, Staunton-Parkersburg Pike, and Midland Trail
grew into the 2-lane blacktops of US 40, US 50, WV Rt 47/US 250 and
US 60 respectively. Along these Apalachian highways grew a number of
unique businesses. Small locally owned shops where many local mountain
items could be purchased. One of my favorites and still today is Cool
Springs on US 50. Cool Springs located approx 20 east of Grafton near
Rowlesburg carries everything from velvet Elvis paintings to fishing
tackle to Hampshire County apples and everything in between. Actually
can still remember signs proclaiming "Washington DC souviners" at
Cool Springs... Another classic Appalachian roadside respite was located
at Chimney Corners on US 60 approx 40 miles east of Charleston. It had
been closed for a couple years but "Chimney Corners USA"
(http://www.chimneycornerusa.com) is now open again. New owners Jim
and Debbie Campbell have big plans for Chimney Corners; great food,
cabin rental, general store and "live" music! Fact is IZZY & CHRIS
(http://www.myspace.com/izzyandchris) and 2-BLUE
(http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendid=395623665)
played there to rave reviews just last week. Izzy & Chris will be
there again this Friday Sept 5th. Showtime is 6:00pm.
Thanks to Jim and Debbie for re-creating this very cool place.
Whitewater rafters, sighseers, travelers, leaf-peekers, and Blues
fans need to check 'em out this summer/fall.
*GRANVILLE HOT LICKS BLUESFEST-
The 2008 "FREE" Hot Licks BluesFest (http://hotlicks.spruz.net),

headliner is JAMES COTTON. Blues start at 12:00noon until 10:00pm. Granville,
home of Dennison University, is located approx 30 miles east of Columbus
