Ernie Banks: Hey Hey
As hope springs eternal, so does the belief that this year will be the year the Cubbies go all the way. Ah-yes, the Cubs 100 year loosing streak of not winning a World Series continues. It is also the 55 year since the Cubs were even in a World Series. This clip is from 1970. One year after the best Cubs team since the probably the 1930s lost the pennet to the 69 Mets. 70 was full of hope, but it was pretty obvious that age had caught up to the Cubs best player Ernie Banks. He was no longer playing short stop and was now on first base. However, Mr. Cub still had the spirit to play two and he sang the Cubs fight song in this video!

Cubs In First!
I haven't posted about the Cubs recently since I didn't want to jinx them. Superstition and baseball seem to go hand in hand. I suppose it has something to do with mojo:-) However, since Sweet Lou Pinella was thrown out of a game back in June, the Cubs have gone on a tear. Of course they also have done it with a bunch of Iowa Cubs. The I-Cubs were in first at the beginning of the season, but have dropped to second place since then. That is also the reason I worry about the Cubs. All of those Iowa Cubs who are now up in the majors are for the most part career minor leaguers at some point these guys are going to stop producing. After all it is August and the Cubs might be due for an August swoon. Hopefully Kerry Wood returning this week will shore up the bullpen, and the Cubbies can hold on to first. Otherwise it might be a long August.

Only a Bluesman Can Love the Cubs

Well it is another season and hope springs eternal for the fans of the Chicago Cubs. It is only the third game of the season and already we are loosing heart breakers. Is it too early too say wait till next year! My theory is that because the Cubs have been so bad for so long is the reason that Chicago has been a great blues town. Think about it, at the cubs were at their worse in the 50s, Chicago blues was at its best. The Cubs improved in the 60s, and the blues started to take a hit. Who can forget Electric Mud! So if the Cubs stay bad I look for a big comeback for the blues.
BTW, a little known fact about Jimmy Pryor. He played one year for the farm team of the Raleigh Clippers of the Negro League. I think it was probably around 1932-34.
