We try to be your Source for what's happening with Live Music in our area - from Marietta-Parkersburg to Charleston, WV, to Columbus, OH, to Pittsburgh, PA. We'll tell you what we know of, what we've heard about, and even the good rumors we've either heard or made up. You may learn something about music along the way, and maybe even get a few laughs in the process. You'll be getting Music News You Can Use in your email in-box about every other week - or when something important comes up in between. THIS IS IMPORTANT
Something wonderful and exciting has happened to the "Live Music" scene here in The Valley. It's called "The Adelphia" and it is a new music room at The Galley, 203 2nd Street in downtown Marietta. The Galley is one of Marietta's favorite restaurant/bars, and they've taken over the building next door, knocked out the wall between and built a state-of-the-art live music venue that you must see to believe.
In a town where we usually get "2nd best" or "just alright," this time they did it right. What I'm trying to say is this place is FIRST CLASS!! I'm telling you, you won't believe this place is in Marietta.
The best part is that they have already booked some GREAT entertainment for the room, and there's lots more on the way. You are going to be able to see the absolute top local bands and entertainers like The Fossils, The MIXX Band, Todd Burge and such -- sure, but also top regional and national touring acts you've never been able to see here locally because there has not been a venue for them to play. Now, with The Adelphia, there is.
But, here's the catch: YOU HAVE TO COME OUT AND SUPPORT IT -- or it will go away, just like the other live music venues YOU didn't support. That's the way this works. They can bring all this great entertainment to Marietta, but unless you and your friends SHOW UP at the door ON A REGULAR BASIS -- NOT once a year, or every three months, or even only once a month. This is not that hard -- all you have to do is come out and enjoy the live music.
Owner John Layman, manager Bronson Bach and the whole staff at The Galley are committed to making The Adelphia THE premier live music venue in southern Ohio. They've done their part -- they've done it FIRST CLASS. Now, it's up to YOU. This will only work if YOU do your part and SHOW UP!!

Patrick McLaughlin This Saturday at New Venue
One of Columbus' most popular blues bands will be making a stop in Marietta to perform at this area's newest live music venue, "The Adelphia" music room at The Galley on Second Street in downtown Marietta. "We are dedicated to bringing top-notch entertainment to the area," said Bronson Bach, General Manager of The Galley.
The Patrick McLaughlin Power Trio from Columbus will appear at "The Adelphia" on Saturday, August 21, 2010. The music begins at 10PM and admission is just $5-dollars. McLaughlin's band just won 1st place in the annual Big Bend Blues Competition in Pomeroy, Ohio, which means they will be going back to Memphis, TN, to represent The Pomeroy Blues & Jazz Society at The International Blues Challenge (IBC) early next year. McLaughlin has been there before - as an IBC finalist and semi-finalist three times over the past five years. Patrick has also been a winner of the local River City Ohio Blues Competition, and has headlined The "Red, White and Blues" on 4th of July weekend here in Marietta. His discography includes five CD releases.
The Columbus Blues Alliance's "Blues Paper" calls Patrick McLaughlin "an intense and gifted guitarist. His new "power trio" seeks to transform the blues, placing it in the mainstream through innovative experimentation." 2009 highlights include a performance at the Ohio State House, opening for Blood, Sweat & Tears, and this year a scheduled performance at the Ohio State Fair.
Long one of downtown Marietta's favorite eateries, The Galley features a full menu of choices - from appetizers and salads and soups to sandwiches and wraps, pasta dishes and burger platters to grass-fed black angus premium steaks and seafood. In recent years, "The Patio" was added, offering open-air outdoor dining and drinks and now, as a further commitment to downtown Marietta, the addition of the new "Adelphia" music room brings a consistent lineup of the finest in live entertainment.

Augie needs your help!
Our good friend Augie ( Austin "Walkin' Cane") needs your help. He's recording a new LIVE CD, and he needs YOU to be in the audience when he makes the recording, TUESDAY, AUGUST 31 at Jackie's Court Street Grill in Pomeroy. It's your chance to be a STAR, and you can tell all your friends you were there during a real recording session. I know, it's a Tuesday night, but we really need a good audience for this live recording. Jackie will have some great grub on the menu, so come as early as you can and have dinner --- Augie promises to make it an early evening, though, 'cause he knows it's a school night. Augie really needs your help on this, so please come out and support Austin "Walkin' Cane" who has represented us in Memphis. BTW, we're all chipping-in 5-bucks to help Augie defer some of the expenses of the recording -- a good investment, I think.

A Blues Music Award Special Broadcast of the 2010 awards from back in May will be shown on WV Public Television, Tuesday, August 24 at 8PM. Worth watching if for no other reason than to laugh at Jason Ricci (Harmonica player of The Year) ... you'll see what I mean.
New DTM Festival in Huntington
The First Annual Diamond Teeth Mary Blues & Arts Festival will be held August 27 4PM-10PM at Heritage Village, 210 11th Street in downtown Huntington honoring that grand old blues shouter from there. BearFest is Back!!
103.1 The Bear (radio) has resurrected it's infamous BearFest for Saturday, August 28th to take place at the Parkersburg Eagles Club in South Parkersburg -- outside. 17-bands are scheduled, none of which I've ever heard of, but that doesn't mean anything. You could say I'm out of the loop on this one -- modern rock, but the Bear has been holding sell-out rock concerts every month at the Eagles now for several months. My hat is off and congratulations to them for their success in bringing more music to our little Valley. Here;s the lineup for BearFest: (On the Main Stage) Saving Abel, Cavo, Nonpoint, Bobaflex, Taddy Porter, American Bang, Black Sunshine, and Atom Smash. (On the Second Stage) Noise Auction, State Your Cause, Zeroking, Jinx'd, In Another Life, Liecus, Underneath It All. More bands may be added. CBA CompetitionThe Columbus Blues Alliance will hold its annual IBC preliminary competition on Sunday, September 26 at Columbus Maennercher in German Village. Doors open at 11am. Competition begins at 12noon. This is always a good time; and it;s where I met lots of good friends in the CBA, the guys from Mojo Theory and Sean Carney, to name-drop a few.

is In The House....at Fishbone!
Soul Blues Legend to Perform in Parkersburg
One of the foremost players in the world of soul/blues music will be making a stop in Parkersburg, when he appears at the new Fishbone Seafood Restaurant, located on the river in Vienna. Even though he tours all over the country and Internationally as well, he is no stranger to music fans in the Mid-Ohio Valley.
Soul/blues legend and member of the West Coast Blues Hall of Fame Johnny Rawls and his band will appear on Friday, August 27, 2010 for a special show at the popular new restaurant - formerly Ricky D's Simply Italian. Rawls' show will begin at 8PM on the newly-built entertainment stage at Fishbone along the Ohio River. Several hundred people can be accommodated with festival-style seating in front of the new stage. Music fans are encouraged to bring their lawn chairs or a blanket, but coolers are not permitted. Tickets are 10-dollars.
Fishbone is the popular new restaurant located at the foot of 17th Street and Grand Central Avenue in Vienna on the Ohio River. It is accessible by boat from the river at docks provided. The menu features seafood,, steaks and chicken, along with salads and soups, including fresh gumbo and seafood bisque. Desserts include Key West lime pie and the "Over The Top" brownie.
Johnny Rawls was raised in Purvis and Gulf Port, Mississippi. His interest in music came early in life, when he heard his grandfather play blues guitar one Christmas morning. Soon, Johnny had his own guitar and he taught himself to play. Johnny Rawls has been playing professionally since he was in high school, with blues legends like ZZ Hill, Little Johnny Taylor and Joe Tex. In the 1970's, he played with OV Wright as his band director. After Wright's death in 1980, he led Johnny Taylor's band until 1985, when he began touring on his own. That was 25-years ago - and he's still doing it. Over the years, he's done it all, from producing, song-writing, horn arranging to rhythm, lead and bass guitar, and of course, vocals.
Nominated multiple times for a BMA (Blues Music Award - formerly W.C. Handy Award, the equivalent to a Grammy Award for a blues artist) Rawls' latest award is a BMA Award for "Soul Blues Album of the Year" for his 2009 album: "The Ace of Spades." His relentless touring schedule takes him to the top blues venues all over the country and all over the world. Additionally, Rawls performs annually at most of the world's top blues festivals, including The Chicago Blues Festival, The King Biscuit Blues Festival and the Poconos Blues Festival in the United States and festivals overseas in Sweden and Poleland.
The night before his appearance at Fishbone, Rawls will be performing at the legendary Buddy Guy's in Chicago. For his next gig, Rawls will be heading for Southern Ohio on Saturday to headline The Foothills Blues & Arts Festival near Harrisonville, Ohio (www.foothillsmusic.org )
"When it comes to Soul/Blues, it doesn't get any better than Johnny Rawls," said Steve Wells, VP of The Blues, Jazz & Folk Music Society. " And to be able to see Johnny in a beautiful and casual setting along the river like Fishbones is a real treat," said Wells. "This will be a show you don't want to miss."
"Bring your lawn chair or a blanket band come on down," invites Gene Butler, owner of Fishbone. "Come early and have a great dinner before the show," he said.

BluesFest 2010 Revisited
GREAT Weekend in Wheeling by the Wheelers
Bruce Wheeler promises a "Weekend of Award-Winning Blues" at his Heritage Music "BluesFest" every August in Wheeling, WV. Bruce Wheeler is a man of his word, 'cause that's exactly what he delivers year after year at what has become the region's most prominent blues festival. Last year, the extravaganza drew music fans from 25-states and 4-countries to little old Wheeling, WV. Out of somewhere around 230 blues festivals held every year in this country, Wheeling's Heritage Music BluesFest was awarded "Blues Festival of The Year" at this year's KBA Awards (Keeping The Blues Alive) by the national Blues Foundation in Memphis, TN.
It's not hard to understand the festival's remarkable success when you see Bruce's lineup each year - the "A list" of everybody in the blues world who is out there touring at festival time. With names like blues icon John Mayall, Pinetop Perkins, Hubert Sumlin, Tab Benoit, John Hammond, John Lee Hooker, Jr., Guy Davis, Janiva Magness, Duke Robillard and Bernard Allison, plus other hot new players --- (and that is just this year) - the Heritage Music BluesFest is a music fan's dream come true. It seems anybody who is anybody in the blues was there, and we got to see several of the hottest new acts just to spice things up - hot new players like Cedric & Malcomb, Davina & The Vagabonds, Damon Fowler, Joanne Shaw Taylor and others. No wonder why this festival is winning awards.
What makes it even more special for Bruce Wheeler is that for him, it's all a "family affair." You see, the people who do all the work to put this top-notch festival together and make it happen are all named Wheeler. There's no blues society, large committee or big production company at work; it's just Bruce Wheeler and his family - his wife, Phyllis, his daughter, Amanda and his son, Leland - that's it. They do all the work, the preparation, the paperwork, the nitty gritty - everything. It's really pretty incredible, when you think about it. It all comes together to be one of the most enjoyable blues festivals I've ever been to.
So, hats off and congratulations to Bruce Wheeler and his family for another job well done. And, as Bruce says, "Just wait 'til next year." Well, Bruce, we'll be waiting. the Voice. |

About The Blues, Jazz & Folk Music Society The Blues, Jazz & Folk Music Society is a non-profit, 501 (c) 3 all-volunteer "force" of music enthusiasts on a mission to enhance the appreciation of American Roots Music in the Mid-Ohio Valley and we do it by presenting concerts, workshops, conferences, and a forum for education and development in the schools.
The BJFM Society celebrates and perpetuates blues and roots music as a traditional, evolutionary, and uniquely American art form. During the grant period, we will continue to present live music in genres not normally available in a small town like ours, to educate and expose our audiences to music new and unfamiliar to many of them. Our goal is to keep blues, jazz and roots music alive in our area.
With the help of volunteers from our membership, and an 8-member board of directors, the BJFM Society will continue to produce and present our "core events" plus other shows throughout the year as the opportunity presents itself.
