| Welcome to the first Document Newsletter of 2008. We are celebrating our 22nd birthday this year; we are pleased to say we have plenty of new releases in the pipeline, some re-issued from 78’s and some specialist private concerts. Look out for the likes of Ike Turner, Rufus Thomas and Tommy Ridgley. Again we would like to thank you for buying direct from Document, like many of the independents we operate on a shoestring and plough any monies made back into new releases or bringing CDs back into stock. ____________________________________________ Forthcoming Document Releases | | ____________________________________________ | Rufus Thomas | | | | | | Cleo Brown Can you help Document?
We were going to release the complete works of Cleo Brown 1935- 1951, however we have discovered that there are many titles missing and that the discographies were not up to date.
If you can offer any further discography details, label scans or any of the "missing" titles that Document need to complete this release, please, please do not hesitate to contact us. I have put together what I believe to be the current definitive discography.
Thanks, Gillian. Please respond to: gillian@document-records.com
| ____________________________________________ Document Discount CDs ____________________________________________ We ended 2007 with the successful release of Reverend Gary Davis Live and we wanted to put together a really “good offer” newsletter as way of thanks in January.
Then it came to us, Gary Davis had been playing in the 30s where he taught Blind Boy Fuller but he really found fame in the Folk and Blues Revival in the early 1960s where he tutored the likes of Woody Mann, Roy Bookinder and Stephan Grossman. Demand soared for these re-discovered artists.
Of course the first and perhaps greatest "discoveries" in Folk Blues were the incomparable Leadbelly (we also celebrate his birth this month 23rd January 1885) and Josh White born 11th Febuary 1914. Sadly Josh seems hardly to get a mention these days but he was a legendary American singer, guitarist, songwriter, actor, and civil rights activist. Today, remembered for his powerful and highly sensual stage presence, while some still remember that he almost single-handedly introduced Negro folk, blues, and gospel music to a world audience in the 1940s. Blind Boy Fuller, Sonny Terry, Lonnie Johnson, Leadbelly and Josh White CDs are on offer at £3.99.
Leadbelly and Josh White’s music affected Europe and in Britain this manifested itself as Skiffle. Its greatest UK exponents were the late great Lonnie Donnegan and of course Chas McDevitt. Donnegan was also influenced by Lonnie Johnson and we are pleased to offer his 1937-1942 recordings at £3.99. The podcast interview with Lonnie Donegan in this newsletter was done in 1995 and appeared in that summer's edition of the fanzine "The Leadbelly Letter" which came out of New York. The sound quality isn’t too great as Gary Atkinson was speaking from an analogue phone in Scotland to a poor line in Spain. Talking of "putting on the agony and putting on the style" as the great Skiffle song goes, it may astonish you to learn that this was written and first recorded by non other than Vernon Dalhart (see DOCD-1105). Dalhart also first wrote and performed "The Run Away Train".
So we also honour Vernon Dalhart this month at £5.99 and other Edisons at £2.99.
Now we don't want you thinking that Skiffle is a British invention as the Wikipedia page rightly say: "The first use of the name on records was in 1925 by the otherwise unknown Jimmy O'Bryant and his Chicago Skifflers." (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Skiffle)
Jimmy is not unknown to Document fans and we are pleased to offer Jimmy O'Bryant Vol 1 1924 – 1925 and Hot Clarinets Jimmy O'Bryant Vol 2 & Vance Dixon 1923 – 1931 at a bargain £2.99 We have got 25 titles that are on offer at £1.99, but supplies at this price are limited. We hope that you are pleased with our selections and Pod cast this month.
We are always delighted to hear from you and hope to feature more of your stories and finds in coming newsletters.

| ____________________________________________ Reverend Gary Davis Manchester Free Trade Hall 1964 DOCD-32-20-14 ____________________________________________ Document is pleased to present an exclusive, never before released CD of the Reverend Gary Davis. His first visit to the UK took place in 1964, as a Member of the Blues and Gospel Caravan, unused to such arduous touring conditions his performances were often patchy, fortunately this is one of the finest from that first visit. Recorded live in the Manchester Free Trade Hall his Gospel pieces are quite superb, indeed this whole CD represents Gary Davis at his majestic best. As Bob Groom ( sleeve note writer and then audience member) notes: "It sounds fresh and vital with Miss Gibson (his guitar) talking to him throughout. With "Come on up, Sonny Terry", Gary annouces the arrival on stage of his old playing partner. Their playing meshes perfectly throughout."Click here to see Reverend Gary Davis on You TubeClick here for the Reverend Gary Davis Wikipedia page Click here for a site devoted to Reverend Gary Davis | | Track List 1. You Got To Move 2. If I Had My Way 3. The Sun Is Going Down 4. I’m A Soldier 5. I Got A Little Mama, Sweet As She Can Be 6. Sally, Please Come Back To Me (Worried Blues) 7. Cocaine Blues 8. | ____________________________________________ Mississippi Blues Volume 4
____________________________________________ This album was originally released in 1987 as DLP 519 during Document Records vinyl release period, prior to the change over to CD format. The album presents a fine demonstration of how the raw country blues of the deep south was swept along by the great migration north where it metamorphed into the powerful electric blues of Chicago which then went on to effect the music of generations around the world.
