Tonight (Thur.) our first invitation EVAH to the Cedar Rapids BBQ Roundup. The biggest BBQ event in the second largest city in our state. It's located on the corner of 8th Ave. and 2nd St. SE. The weather prognosticators say any lingering showers will be over by the early evening, but there are plenty of tents available and the stage is covered, so it's rain or shine. Friday (6/24) marks our return to Urbandale Friday Fest. I think we've been part of this Des Moines area TGIF party for half of our 30 years. The Urbandale Sports Association (that's right, USA!) has used the money generated from these Friday evening shows to upgrade and upkeep the ball diamonds and recreational areas in Urbandale. Drink beer, dance and benefit your community. Good combo. We play at Walker/Johnston Park, 90th and Douglas Ave., 5:15-8:15p. There is a rain site, but we won't need it!...
Saturday is another first in our 30 year history, Prairie City Days! Prairie City is 7 miles south of I-80 at the junction of Hwy 163 and 117, about 13 miles east of Des Moines. We play on the city bandshell 7-10pm. Fireworks follow us. I LOVE these town festivals in the summertime!...
And speaking of town festivals, Sunday has us at my own hometown's weekend spectacular, Sturgis Falls Days. I'm laying claim that the Blue Band has played at every main stage location that Sturgis Falls Days has ever had. including Island Park, UNI West field (in the big flood year of 1993), The Hub (in the big flood year of 2008) and this week's location, Tourist Park (same as recent years) This will be the last year for Tourist Park, as that stage will be moved to Gateway Park in 2012. We play 5-7pm and this year we're followed by one of the best new-generation blues players in the nation, Hamilton Loomis. It means the world to me to be invited to this Sparkle City Spectacular. 4th of July weekend has us in Clear Lake, 7/1; Iowa Falls, 7/2; Charles City, 7/3; and Lamoni, 7/4. More on these gigs next week (if we live thru this week!)...
A quick shout out to the many people who have been generous recently with tip jar donations. We traveled over 700 miles last week, in 3 vehicles, and gasoline costs have severely eaten away at any profits (the equipment truck gets 10.2 MPG, with a tail wind) and the jar money has really helped, thank you. And also a quick thanks to people who have been regularly bringing CAKE! (and other goodies)...
By the end of this weekend, we will have played more gigs in June than we did in Jan/Feb/Mar/April combined! Thank you for the 30 years of encouragement and support. We're only going to do this another 30 years, so get out on the Blue Highway! Rub yer washboard to the tune of On The Road Again, bring CAKE and don't forget that we love you.
