Blues Historian Review: Robben Ford, Soul On Ten
Robben Ford's latest release Soul On Ten, is a live blues rock concert recorded at The Independent in San Francisco near where the old Filmore West was located. All but two of the songs are live from the concert. The last two Don't Worry About Me, and Thoughtless, are studio recordings. Ford is a master guitar player who can lay it down. Most of the concert is played in the blues rock style of Hendrix, with plenty of wah wah. Much like Ford's previous release Truth, Soul on Ten has a feel of the mid to late 70s. The strong guitar playing, the smooth vocals, and the nice mix of musical styles. Many of the songs are from Truth, and it is great to hear them live. I have always believed that blues and blues rock is best served live. Many times studio recordings come across as stiff and lacking life, but live is one take and done, just the way the blues should be done.
Much like his previous effort, this is not going to excite the blues purists, but to music lovers this is a great CD of live music. It can currently be found at Amazon.com RIGHT HERE.
