A great time at the BMAs!Once again the blues world came together for it's family reunion as the industry reflected on the year that past since the lastBMAs. Congratulations to theBlues Foundation for a perfectly executed show filled with the joy and excitement of award announcements, great performances representing all aspects of the today's blues scene, amazing smoozes, networking and photo ops, and a touching memorial tribute film listing many of those blues artists and professionals that have recently left us. It was a joy to introduceMud Morganfieldaround at the Hall of Fame Dinner on May 9, and it was my honor to perform at the awards show on May 10, withDiunnaGreenleaf,Bob Margolin,Patrick Rynn, andChuck Cotton! Happyto be a member of this vibrant community! Congratualtions to all the winners (Clickhereto see winners), and nominees (Clickhere to see nominees). If you missed theBlues Music Awards on May 10th, you will have the chance to hear the show in its entirety on Memorial Day, Monday, May 28. Tune intoBB King's Bluesville, Channel 70 on yourSirius XM dial, from noon until 6:00PM.
Louisina Red Memorial Tribute acknowledgements: On the afternoon of Friday,May11, which was the day after theBMAs, a highly successful memorial tribute to the late blues legendLouisiana Red took place at theHard Rock Cafe on Beale Street in Memphis. In a 4 hour period that day over 50 top blues musicians performed. All proceeds went toGeneration Blues, theBlues Foundation's educational fund, a cause thatLouisiana Red would have fully endorsed. SinceLouisiana Red had lived in Germany for the last 30 years of his life, and his funeral was understandably held in Hannover, this event served as the only US memorial accessible to the many people who loved this great man.The lineup included host band Bob Margolin,Bob Corritore,David Maxwell,Willie J. CampbellandJimi Bottwith special guestsLazy Lester,Maria Muldaur,Diunna Greenleaf,John Primer,Randy Chortkoff,Big Pete,Billy Flynn,Michael Frank,Chris James&Patrick Rynn, Rob Stone,Nick Moss,Rich DelGrosso &Jonn Del Toro Richardson,Jostein Forsberg& Morten Omlid,Billy Gibson&JT Lauritsen,Marquise Knox,Matt Hill,Cleome Bova,Anson FunderburghwithAndy T,Nick Nixon, andMarkey Jeannette,Lightnin' Malcolm,Richard Rosenblatt,Michael Frank,Guitar Mikey,JW Jones,Zac Harmon,Barbara Blue,Bill Sims&Mark Lavoie,RB Stone,Adrianna Marie,Enrico Crivellaro&Raphael Wressnig,Brad Vickers,Laura Chavez,Evan Caleb,Gina Sicilia,Dave Gross,Nikki Hill,Shakura S'Aida, Popcorn (Michael Burk's drummer),Tracy Nelson,Clay Swafford, and more! Thanks to all these great musicians who each donated their services. Note that over $2500 was raised forGeneration Blues through door fees, CD sales and extra donations. Thanks toDavid Bernstonand his wife who drove from Tulsa to help with this event and so generously gave of themselves. Thanks to Kyle Dieblerwho assisted me in the stage management and flow. Events such as these, by their very nature, have no set schedule and "on the spot" strategy shifts, so Kyle's work was especially difficult. Thanks toAmy Brat who volunteered her artistic services in creating the beautiful flyer for this event (Click hereto see) and herBrat Media Group for publicizing the event. Thanks toCleome Bova who paid for the printing of event fliers and who made sure that the musicians on stage and backstage had water to drink (as well as contributing a great song in the tribute). Thanks to Bob Margolinwho co-hosted this event and to the amazing house band who accomidated each musical style they were asked to back with perfection and grace. Thanks to the Hard Rock Cafefor providing a spectacular, smoke free venue with great sound and backline. And, of course, thanks toGeneration Blues for their most noble mission of blues education. During the course of the show, I called Red's wife Dora in Germany who was not able to attend the event. I held the phone up as I instructed the crowd to applaud Red and there was an overwhelming roar that Dora was able to hear. That night I called Dora again to give her a detailed rundown of the event. She wanted me to pass on her gratefulness that we were able to pay tribute to her late husband. Thanks everyone for givingLouisiana Red the musical memorial that he so rightly deserved.

- Little Walter,Baby Face Leroy,Muddy Waters unissued Parkway alternate takes released!Louis Records from the UK has recently issued two limited edition collector's 45rpm vinyl records of great interest to fans of classic Chicago blues. But low and behold, thanks to UK blues artist and collectorBig Joe Louis and hisLouis Records, we are now treated to some previously unheard material from this historic session, . A second single features extended versions, without fade outs of parts 1 and 2 ofBaby Face Leroy classic version of "Rollin' and Tumblin" with the amazing harmony of Leroy, Walter, and Muddy all moaning the melody line! This is simply top shelf blues that was inovating at the moment it was being recorded. To hear these great sides, and to order, you can clickhere. If you live in the USA it might be easier to order these fromNorton Records. Thanks Big Joe for making this priceless music available!
