G Jai’s Jook Joint LLC 10 Songs; 34:46 Minutes; Meritable Styles: Female Vocal Led Blues; Classic Female Blues I have recently received several CDs from women claiming to be “Blues Artists.” Which of the following choices of titles and phrases seem to be authentic Blues to You? 1) “Delicious” 2) “I Miss You” 3) “Gonna Be Alright” 4) “Easier Alone” 5) “Shut your pie-hole, and step the hell back” Choice number five is by G Jai from Detroit, and this woman has grit, determination, attitude, and sass – and that is a good thing! Born in 1968, this lady is anything but timid. What you hear from her is raw emotion and feeling. Need more proof? Try these lyrics, “I was born in the ‘hood, but I’m not hardcore. I got sex appeal oozing from every little bitty pore; got a sharp mouth and a whole lot of sass. If you don’t like my style, you can kiss my chocolate ass!” More insight into G Jai’s approach comes from her liner notes, “I won’t pretend I know everything about the Blues.... It’s about having the dignity to get up from the ground, dust yourself off and walk proud even after falling flat on your face! ... that’s damn sho’ what it’s about to me.” The CD’s ten songs are a combination of G Jai originals and revamped covers of early 1920s songs, two of which were sung by the legendary Alberta Hunter (“Chirping the Blues” and “Down Hearted Blues”). “I Got the Blues...All Because of You” hearkens back to the times when women reigned supreme in the Blues world. G'Jai has taken inspiration and gives proper recognition to the fore-mothers of the blues. "You can't look to the future without embracing your past!" says G'Jai. The set opens with “Little Lady from Detroit” with her lyrics done to the music and rhythm of Muddy Water’s “Hootchie Cootchie Man.” The song is an excellent opener to introduce the listener to G Jai and her sharp witted style and spunk. For example, [my five older sisters] “they taught me well; [I] stand up for my self. You don’t like it? Go to hell; you know I’m here....” Joining G Jai in the M3 Studios are Bryan Richard Pope – lead and rhythm guitars, Eddie Kohen – bass, Daniel Williams – drums/percussion, Don Jones – sax and flute, Harold Price – harmonica, and Bob Madgett – keyboards. Guitar fans may be a little disappointed due to Pope’s string work being kept in the background as the emphasis is on the vocals. Listen closely though because the cat is really wailing back in there. “Shut Yo Flap” has a bouncy rhythm and is catchy as a cold. “Shut your pie-hole, and step the hell back” (in this review’s first paragraph above) derives from this number sung to a clueless flap-jawed female and supposed friend. “If You Want to Keep Your Daddy Home” by Grainger and Ricketts in 1923 gives every woman some advice, which may or may not be good advice. For example, “If your loving ways don’t keep him home, I’ll tell you just what to do. Get a stick and hit him across his dome; let him know just who is who. If your rough treatment fails you then... there’s a way you can call his hand: let him see you hug and kiss another man. That’s my policy, and it may -- help you keep your daddy home to stay....” Attempting jug band style, the mid song slide guitar solo sound is so unique that on first listen, I thought it was a kazoo. Fans of vocals sung by strong females will find G Jai entertaining and worthy of your attention. Featured Blues Review 2 of 5
Dave Arcari – Devil’s Left Hand 12 tracks, 33.06 minutes. Dave Arcari is from Scotland and has produced a number of solo albums over recent years while maintaining a relentless touring programme across Europe and Canada. His latest CD is entirely solo, voice and National Resophonic guitar, apart from drums on one track. The material here includes 7 originals alongside covers of songs by Johnny Cash, Richard M Jones (“Trouble In Mind”, often associated with Big Bill Broonzy) and the inevitable Muddy Waters and Robert Johnson. In addition Dave has put one of Scottish national poet/hero Robert Burns’ poems to music, a repetition of a successful effort on his previous CD. Dave sings in a gruff voice with a strong Scottish accent which works especially well with dramatic pieces such as the title song “Devil’s Left Hand” which relates the traditional encounter between guitar player and Satan, but here Dave gets the better of Old Nick – “The Devil’s left hand reached across the Styx, I drank all his whisky and learned some of his tricks”! Keeping to the satanic theme the next original is “Devil’s Deal”, a song in which the Devil is trying to contact Dave, initially without success until he comes at night, but is still rejected by Dave “the next time you try to reach me, offer me a better deal”. “Cotton On My Back” sounds a little like Johnny Cash, especially with lyrics like “Some say I’m a bad guy, I always dress in black I don’t think you should judge me by the cotton on my back. I might be a little messed up, but that don’t give you the right to take me for the Devil, I won’t go without a fight”. “Hangman’s Blues” is another dramatic tune with the fatalistic line “I didn’t come here to make a speech, I just came here to die”. “One Side Blind” is a slower piece about not jumping to conclusions and criticising without understanding. “Texicali Waltz” is a song that Dave reprises here from an earlier CD. There is a country/americana feel to it and Dave ends with a short waltz time section too! The final original is “Dragonfly”, a short piece with drums (Paul Savage), an aggressive piece which worked less well for me than the rest of the album – quite ‘punk’ in its approach, in my view. The covers are all well done. “Trouble In Mind” is the only number on which Dave moves away from the resonator and uses a Telecaster. The classic song is taken at a slow pace and is probably the gentlest song on the album. RJ’s “Come On In My Kitchen” leans heavily on the slide and is played rather more slowly than in many versions. Again, Dave’s voice fits this one like a glove and you can see this working really well live. “Can’t Be Satisfied” is one of my favourite Muddy Waters tunes and is one that is often covered, not least by acoustic or semi acoustic performers. Dave’s version is pretty straightforward but works well. On Johnny Cash’s “Blue Train” Dave sounds quite like the man in black himself and does the song justice. That leaves the adaption of the Burns poem “MacPherson’s Lament”. Not surprisingly, it’s another cheerful song about a hanging! Dave’s music starts in a slow and stately manner before he sings Burns’ poem that deals with the final words and actions of a man who has been condemned to hang for his crimes. Burns, of course, wrote partly in dialect and Dave keeps much of the original wording, so it’s not easy to get all the words. MacPherson apparently was a fiddler of renown and played a tune before his execution. He then offered his fiddle to the crowd and when nobody came forward broke it across his knee. The broken pieces of the fiddle are in a clan museum in Scotland. Overall an enjoyable acoustic album with quite a theme running through it. The Devil’s Music indeed! Kirsten Thien - Delicious Screen Door Records 13 tracks Sultry, seductive, rocking, hollering, testifying, smoking hot- this CD runs the gamut of emotions and showcases the talents of this fine young artist. Kirsten Thien’s third CD release is a superb CD that ranges in influences from Ida Cox through Linda Ronstadt with some Church influence to Aretha Franklin and beyond. Her R&B laden brand of blues was born on a German Army base, grew up in Maine listening to Linda Ronstadt and singing in a “Northern Baptist” church, and then was exposed the Aretha and New Orleans music and the 1920’s blues singers in Georgetown at college. After abandoning a career in banking, she set her sights on music and the Memphis sound. Her vocals remind me a little of another red headed singer, the great Bonnie Raitt, but she is uniquely her own woman. Thien gives us 11 songs (2 tracks are remixed for radio and reprised at the end of the CD) of which she wrote or had a hand in writing 8 of them. Two of the covers are from Ida Cox and Willie Dixon. Her rendition of Cox’ “Wild Women Don’t Have the Blues” is stripped down with her on acoustic guitar and Memphis musician Billy Gibson in harp. It is also included as a bonus video when you play the CD on a computer. It is a powerful rendition that showcases her ample voice and talents. The Dixon song evokes her sultry side as she snarls and wails about all the symbols of good and bad luck, again with less accompaniment- just guitar and drums are backing her. The last cover is “Taxi Love”, a down and dirty number that is about what the title states. Written by Charlie Feldman and Jon Tiven, Thein more than amply describes the backseat love affair of the song and allows the listener to enjoy her ride. The title track is a breathy song that starts by likening her delicious love with her man to the apple in the Garden of Eden, but then tells us she is not singing about apples. Her vocals exude the flames of lusty lovemaking. “In “Treat ‘Im Like a Man” she tells how she will get her guy just by treating him like a man. “Love That’s Made To Share” opens the set with Thein backed by the large cast of characters including Hubert Sumlin and a horn section. It’s a bouncy and fun tune where she talks about the love she has that is made to share. Sumlin also joins her on the lusty “Please Drive”, a down and dirty number where she describes the lust of a young girl “going for a ride” and asking her guy to, “Please drive”. Love and love making seem to find their way into a lot of her songs, and she portrays it all quite well! The tracks are hot, the vocals are even more smokin’ and the backing musicians know when restraint is best and when to let it all out. This is a marvelous CD by a great singer and song writer. Whether it be a stripped down track with just one or two people backing her or a song with big horn arrangements, the music evokes rawness and emotions. Thien’s third CD make me want to run and check out her first two. A most highly recommended album! Reviewer Steve Jones is secretary of the Crossroads Blues Society in Rockford. The Christmas Jug Band - On the Holiday Highway 16 Tracks, 72: 55 Total Running Time Styles: Early American Classic Jazz- Blues Infused Jug Band, Acoustic, Swing, Skiffle, Novelty, and Folk Another Jug Band CD, you might ask? I certainly did, when asked to review this seasonal release. After all, who buys seasonal skiffle? Well, I was pleasantly surprised at just how much I liked The Christmas Jug Band, On the Holiday Highway. While I’m not a total Scrooge, I certainly appreciate the pontificating but clean and light-hearted slap stick stabs at the big ole guy in the red suit. What better way is there to poke innocent fun at our American holiday tradition than through traditional early American classic jug music? Produced by Tim Echliman and the CJB, the music was recorded live across 7 shows at 4 locations in Northern California, between 2006 and 2008 at locations that included The Freight & Salvage Coffeehouse, Berkeley, CA Paradise Performing Arts Center, Paradise, CA; Masonic Hall, Mill Valley, CA; and the Sweetwater Station, Larkspur, CA. The talented line up of prominent San Francisco Bay Area artists include Austin de Lone, Paul Rogers, Dan Hicks, Tim Eschliman, Jim Rothermel, Gregory Leroy Dewey, Turtle Vandermarr, Blake Richardson, Knucklehead McGurk, Ken “Sakebite” Jacobs, Antoni Lech Wyarznski, Anthony Paule, Bowen Brown and special guests Country Joe McDonald, Norton Buffalo, Mike Duke and Dan Hicks' Lickettes.. Whew….yes, 17 of them. To give you an example of the wild sleigh ride you’ll take with these 16 tracks, you could go from a pew-jumping thigh-slappin’ instrumental whammy of early American classic jitterbug-tap with “Shoot ‘Em in the Pants”, to an unlikely match up of the beats of Old-World Latin American tango with New World American-comic song writing such as in the questioning of Santa’s existence in Track 2’s “This Christmas Night” (“Daddy’s sittin’ in his easy chair, when Santa comes, he’s never there; he’s got a secret but he doesn’t dare tell me on this Christmas night”). “Santa’s Going Crazy This Year” might be the words and title track for #4, but the jazzy blues cacophony of piano, percussion, and soprano and baritone sax will send you grooving to the dance floor regardless of the message; grab your Woodford Reserve for this one, blues-jazz lovers. Spoofs and parodies continue throughout with the likes of “Jolly Ol’ Soul”, “Christmas in the Bottle”, and “Evathang Gonna Be All Right”, all performed live with splendid traditional jug, jelly roll piano, classic blues vocal innuendos and gleeful audience oohs and aahs in the background. This is” Jeff Foxworthy & Larry the Cable Man meet up with the San Franciscan audience-favorite entertaining comedy troupe “Christmas Jug Band”. And while this is the perfect CD to get a few laughs and loosen up your guests at your holiday party, don’t think this is a seasonal-only play. Their clever comedic songwriting is also cleverly underpinned with some talented playing. No, this ain’t “Away in the Manger” or “Silent Night”, because—let’s face it: they don’t sound too good with kazoos, slide whistles, washboards and accordions. So think of “Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer” and “I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Clause” kickin’ it up with some jug! Enjoy! The Todd Wolfe Band - Live American Home Entertainment 10 tracks/71:31 For his seventh release, Todd Wolfe hit the road to record live on-stage at Quakertown, PA. The audience at McCoole's Art Place certainly got earful of Wolfe's guitar pyrotechnics that night. Using the power trio format, the former guitarist for Sheryl Crow's road band gets backing from Suavek Zaniesisnko on bass guitar & vocals plus Roger Voss on drums and percussion. Wolfe handles the lead vocals, his appealing voice commanding the listener's attention throughout the disc. He also had a hand in writing nine of the songs. The notes with the disc states the band harks back to a time when “..men were men and amps were amps”. And Wolfe certainly lives up to that statement, turning each solo into a mind-melting demonstration of his technical prowess at concert hall volume levels. The lone exception occurs on “Roll Over” when Wolfe makes the switch to an acoustic slide guitar. The rest of the time, he tears through each solo at a frenetic pace. That will create excitement in a live setting but grows a bit tiresome when the visual element is absent. There will be a companion release of this show in the DVD format. The opening track, “Ready for Love”, is a rocker with a strong vocal from Wolfe and a pounding beat from Voss. It's full-speed ahead on “Crowded in My Soul”, with the leader and Zaniesisnko contributing a neat bit of vocal harmonizing on the chorus. Wolfe's guitar solo skips any attempt at genuine feel in favor of a rapid journey up and down the guitar neck. The opening sequence of “Cold Black Night” offers the first sign of any blues influence. Wolfe sings with passion , keeping his guitar work under control at the slower pace until the start of his solo, when his slash & burn style kicks in once again. “Gates of Heaven” sports an expressive vocal from the leader, backed by a resounding series of guitar chords and a closing passage that pays homage to Jimi Hendrix. The chuka-chuka guitar line on “Black Hearted Woman” is enhanced by a wah-wah pedal, before giving way to several more bombastic solo sequences. “Silver Blue” features Wolfe on slide guitar, relating a tale of battling demons in New Orleans. The band injects a funk element into “Change Will Come” but the track suffers from weak lyrics. The closing track, “Shame” clocks in just short of fifteen minutes, providing plenty of space for Wolfe's tour de force guitar performance, as he pulls out all of the stops over Zaniesienko's thick bass lines. The track runs out out steam when the dreaded drum solo interrupts the proceedings. If you long to return to the glory days when bands like Cream ruled the world, Todd Wolfe may be just what you have been looking for. There is no denying his appeal as a vocalist and many will also be infatuated with his guitar work. For these ears, his playing was often too fast with little sense of feel. But his sincere delivery will undoubtedly win over a substantial number of people who take the time to give this one a listen. For other reviews and interviews on our website CLICK HERE |
