for another Porky's Parking Lot Party, 44th & Douglas in Des Moines. It's
our first time ever playing the Wednesday Car Night (as opposed to our usual
Thursday Bike Night) Remember, this is the last summer for Porky's and this is
the last scheduled time we have to play there (I'd like to think we could
squeeze in one more date, but nothing's FER SURE.) We play 6-9pm, Al & Heath
are scheduled for the horn section and Dave Altemeier, who played many dates
with us last year, will be subbing for Davis on the bass. BTW, Davis' dad seems
to be doing better after his heart attack, but certainly isn't back to normal...
Part 2 of the note will have to come at it's usual time (Thursday
night/Friday morning) and will give you some details on all three cool gigs for

Dustin Smith is the son of Jimi Vincent and drummer of Jimi Vincent Band from
Mansfield, OH. He has been in a motorcycle accident and is now in intensive
care in Columbus awaiting surgery. Friends and fans can help the family in

Surgery on Friday was scheduled to last about eight hours but took nearly twelve.
Doctors found more damage than expected. Jimi said that Dustin looks better
than he could ever imagined in light of all that has happened. The surgeon
had to remove the wisdom teeth. All of the other teeth are intact. The doctors
are waiting until Tuesday (8/26) to see if they have to wire the jaw shut.
Dustin is being kept under sedation for a couple days.
Jimi and family would like to thank everyone for the prayers, emails and all
the love that has been sent their way during this crisis. Fox rock radio
stations are planning a benefit concert to help with medical bills on Oct 18h
in the Mansfield area. (thanks Sam)

It was reported to us a couple weeks ago while in Wheeling that Greenville,
Mississippi native, T-MODEL FORD aka "Taildragger"
(http://www.fatpossum.com/artists/tmodel.html) was dealing with some health issues.
Spider, HoodooBub and crawlinkingsnake saw him at Sarah's Kitchen in Clarksdale
last April. Later that weekend I had an absolutly great time sitting beside T-Model
while his grand-son, "STUD" played drums for ROBERT BELFORE. As T-Model says,
"and that's for got damn sho!" Since I hadn't heard anymore about his health
situation, I decided to some checking around. Went directly to "THE SOURCE"
for anything Mississippi; that of course being Roger Stolle of Cat Head Delta Music
(http://www.cathead.biz). Roger says that two (now three) weeks ago T-Model had
been in the hospital for about a week. Had a pacemaker implanted and is now taking
medication for some blood clots in his legs. Right now he is home and doing better.
There is a benefit for him on Thursday 8/28 at the Walnut Street Blues Bar
(http://www.deltablues.net/bait.html) in Greenville. He says he plans on driving
down for it and will know more after that. (thanks Roger)
*OLD TIME INFLUENCE-
Picked up Sept issue of "Americana Rhythm - Music Magazine" at The Purple Fiddle
last week. Noticed an article by SCOTT PERRY (http://www.ohpapa.com).
Scott is very active in the Floyd, VA area with blues and roots music.
Events like the Blues Ridge Blues & BBQ Festival, Floyd Fest, The Pickin' Porch
and much more. First saw Scott at The Court Street Grill what seems like years ago.
Uh wait, it was years ago... Article titled "Old Time Influence" where he says
old-time music today is becoming like 'folk' music did in the 60's...
smoother more commercial. However more young people recognize this trend
and are trying not to sound like it. Also African roots and other
cultural influences are exposed more and people are open to more rustic sounds.

*SOMEWHERE NEAR HARRISONVILLE, OH-
The Foothills Blues & Arts Festival (http://www.foothillsmusic.org)
was held last week "somewhere near Harrisonville, OH." This was the 2nd blues fest
held in scenic Meigs County this year. New territory to me... had never been
down Ohio Rt 143 or Mudfork Road. Their website had a number to call if ya got lost.
But after dark, probably the best thing to do was look for the glow off
Willie Pooch's suit. Awesome! Jarred Sheets, the Sheets family and the
many volunteers had to have been happy with this weekend. Held on the Sheets
farm that covers over 500 acres of beautiful southeast Ohio country side.
This was the 3rd year for the event and best so far. The crowd on Saturday
seemed to be very good although never heard any numbers. Talked with people
as far away as Dayton, OH and Keyser, WV. Favorite acts for me were
JOHNNY & DESTINY RAWLS, RAY FULLER w/WILLIE POOCH, BOB MARGOLIN and of course
IZZY & CHRIS. Congrats to all those who worked hard to pull this event off and
lookin' forward to 2009!

airport's name to honor the late singer ISAAC HAYES... at a memorial service for

Airport board chairman Arnold Perl said Hayes was a great ambassador for Memphis,
but the current airport name best serves the city's needs. Hayes died Aug 10th of

The Pearson Lakes Art Center is thrilled to be able to present your 2009 performance season. Many hours and months have gone into creating this schedule. We have designed this season much like the last three years, so that there is something for everyone! We have 24 events planned including the third installment of the “Growing Iowa’s Economy Speaker Series.”
Many of our performances will have educational components for youth or the public. These performances are marked with an E. Keep an eye out for the public and student workshops being offered throughout the year by our various performers. All of our performances include our ever popular “Final Set,” a meet and greet with every performer that comes through our building. This is the perfect opportunity to get your memorabilia signed by the artists themselves and ask any questions you may have. We offer most of our shows as packages, individual tickets, or as a season pass. The PLAC is thrilled to present Mr. Roger McGuinn, one of the most important names in rock and pop music history. Mr. McGuinn is a music legend and perhaps one of the most accomplished and versatile musicians in the history of rock and roll. He has played on, arranged, written and produced some of the most famous records in the history of popular music. Founder of one of the most important groups in the history of pop music, THE BYRDS, his legendary status is well established.
MICHAEL JOHNSON: August 17, 2009
Michael is an artist the PLAC has tried to bring to our stage for a number of years, and in 2009 he’ll be finally performing at Okoboji. His voice quickly identifies him as the man who sings “Bluer than Blue” and “That’s That”, a soundtrack for our lives. He has toured with John Denver, performed on the Tonight Show with Jay Leno and released 20 albums.

Holders of the record for the largest attended show ever in the Lauridsen Performing Arts Theater-it’s GAELIC STORM! How could we not bring them back? Terrance has been performing for 23 years and was the first Zydeco artist to be asked by the U.S. State Dept. to tour and perform in Cuba. He is the creator of one of the finest children’s music education programs in the country that teaches about Zydeco music and the Creole culture...Creole for
Kidz. In addition to his public performance, he will be hosting three workshops for grade school students. In true Mardi Gras style we will have Gumbo samples from Remington’s Restaurant.

It’s a night of BBQ, Hot Sauce and High Steppin’ New Orleans Fun! Rockin’ Jake’s live show is one not to be missed. It is a mix of zydeco, blues, swamp funk, and second line. Jake is considered THE finest harmonica player to ever hail from “The Big Easy” and is a 5 time winner of New Orleans’ OFF BEAT magazine’s coveted “Best of the Beat” Award for best harmonica player. And if that isn’t enough, Jake is an award winning barbecue chef and will be cooking up some sweet and spicy samples for all of the PLAC patrons.
THE HEADLINERS: June 17, 2009
It’s a tradition that the PLAC present The Headliners for another night of fun and great music. People enjoy their eclectic mix of all kinds of jazz; from Latin jazz, to standard jazz favorites. This is always one of our best received shows of the summer.
PERFORMANCE PACKAGE consists of top quality classical performances by professional performers. Our Hancher Show is always the highest quality, Michael Antonello Event, Dancers in Company and the return of John Moore

We will schedule a performance presentation through Hancher Auditorium for the 2009 season. At this time we don’t know the exact artist but a special show is planned. We expect this performance to be held in November 2009. There may be a workshop associated with this show.

We are very fortunate to be able to bring back Violin Master, Michael Antonello for our 2009 performance season. A special event will be announced soon regarding his performance.
A JOHN MOORE CHRISTMAS: December 10 & 12, 2009
From Milford, Iowa to New York City’s Metropolitan Opera, we are thrilled to bring back the Lake’s Area’s own John Moore. John is currently working in New York City’s Metropolitan Opera’s Young Artist Program; a master’s degree type program for extraordinary opera singers. You will have to wait a long time to hear vocals this outstanding. He will be hosting two performances for the 2009 holiday season!
UNIVERSITY OF IOWA’S DANCERS IN COMPANY (E): April 25, 2009
One of the finest college based dance companies will come to the Lauridsen Performing Arts Theatre stage as the University of Iowa’s Dancers in Company return to the PLAC. Dancers in Company is comprised of graduate and undergraduate students selected through a rigorous audition process. AN EVENING WITH SHAKESPEARE: Returning in 2009 will be the PLAC and the Lakes News Shopper’s popular “An Evening with Shakespeare”. Mission Theatre Company, the first professional, year round theatre company in the Iowa Great Lakes, will be performing Renegade Shakespeare; a pastiche of the Bard’s great plays. It is a mix of the comical, tragical, historical and much more. In addition members of OST will be invited to appear in this outdoor setting

Press Release-2008 Iowa Blues Challenge-Solo/Duo Acts Finals
Congratulations to Case Of The Blues, winners of the 2008 Iowa Blues Solo/Duo Challenge held August 24th at Blues on Grand. Case Of The Blues received $250 cash plus $300 travel expenses to Memphis as our state representative at the International Blues Challenge, February 4th – 7th, 2009.
They were one of five acts from across Iowa to participate in this event.
The 2008 Iowa Blues Challenge has been proudly sponsored by Central Iowa Blues Society, Mississippi Valley Blues Society, Lizard Creek Blues Society, Budweiser and Citadel Broadcasting/94.9KGGO & 98.3WOW and the Russell Bird Foundation.

- Down Home Blues Festival at the Rhythm Room this Sunday: For those of us that love an earthy, real quality with a strong sense of tradition in our blues, the Rhythm Room's 2nd Annual Labor Day Weekend Down Home Blues Festival is cause for celebration. The event combines the talents of a number of great national recording artists in a quickly-paced rotation, showcasing the individuality of each artist. Tail Dragger will be coming from Chicago, with his larger-than-life personality, and his Howlin' Wolf-influenced vocals. Eddie Taylor, Jr. is the son of Chicago blues guitar legend Eddie Taylor, and has an uncanny way of playing and singing in his father's beautiful, understated style. Tomcat Courtney is a master of Texas country blues, and possesses a beautiful style somewhat reminiscent of Lightnin' Hopkins. Big Pete Pearson is "Arizona's King of the Blues", and his zesty, energetic vocals are always a crowd pleaser. Paris James is a student of the late Reverend Louis Overstreet, and has represented down home blues in Phoenix for decades. The Rhythm Room All-Stars feature the full-toned Chicago harmonica playing of Bob Corritore, the unstoppable deep blues groove of guitarist Chris James and bassist Patrick Rynn, and the seasoned beat of Brian Fahey. The Rhythm Room All-Stars will serve as the house band for the event. The Rhythm Room is located at 1019 E. Indian School Road, Phoenix, AZ 85014. Doors open at 7pm, cover charge is $12. - New Photos Added to Tail Dragger Page! Thanks to Scott Dirks and photographer Rob de Fries for contributing additional photos just added to the Tail Dragger page. Rob provided some beautiful portraits of Tail Dragger appearing earlier this year at the Botermarkt Blues Festival in the Netherlands. Scott provided a photo of the poster for the 5105 Club (a regular gig for Tail Dragger in the 90s), and an amazing vintage photo of a 5 year old Tail Dragger! To see these new photos, click here.
- Dave Riley and Bob Corritore Interviews Posted on France's Route 66 Website! David Baerst, host of the blues radio show Route 66 (on RDL Radio in Colmar, France) held separate interviews with Dave Riley and Bob Corritore right after their July 28, 2008 performance at the Cognac Blues Festival. David reports that he will also air the interview and do a radio program devoted to Bob Corritore in October and to Dave Riley in October or November (exact dates forthcoming). - Bob Corritore's Birthday Party Announced: Bob was not going to have his annual birthday bash at the Rhythm Room, because he would be in Germany performing at the Lahnstein Blues Festival on his actual birthday (September 27). But with some persuasion, he will throw his party on September 13, 2008 at the Rhythm Room with his band The Rhythm Room All-Stars performing (Big Pete Pearson, Chris James, Patrick Rynn, Brian Fahey, and Bob). A special guest appearance with Long John Hunter will take place in the middle set, which will allow Bob to get around and greet his guests. If you attend, Bob requests no presents (just a card is great), as your attendance will be the greatest gift. The Rhythm Room is located at 1019 E. Indian School Road, Phoenix, AZ 85014. - Maxwell Street Documentary Finally Available on DVD: The movie And This Is Free: The Life And Times Of Chicago's Legendary Maxwell Street is a 1964 documentary of Chicago's open-air market that brought together a melting pot of musicians, street corner evangelists, businessmen, and hustlers in a true cultural phenomenon. The street's deep tradition of blues is prevalent throughout the movie, with performances by Johnny Young, Blind Arvella Gray, Robert Nighthawk, and Blind Jim Brewer. This spectacular "slice of life" cinematic achievement brings you right into the hectic, glorious hustle that gathered all elements of a diverse Chicago together each Sunday morning. Maxwell Street was redeveloped and moved, and will never be the same; but at least this documentary exists as a time machine to reflect of the beauty and character of the Maxwell Street Market. - Koko Taylor Band in Van Accident; Koko was not in Van and is OK. This news from Jim Themelis: Koko Taylor's band was in an accident on Saturday, August 23, 2008. The van hit an embankment and threw all passengers out of the vehicle. Vino Louden, Shun Kikuta, and Ricky Nelson were named as being in the van, and sustaining serious but non-fatal injuries. Bassist Melvin Smith (who was in Brazil on tour with Lurrie Bell) was not in the vehicle.

Andy sent me an email about a nice event he is particpating in to help defray some medical costs for John Dee Holeman. Holeman is one of the last authenic Piedmont style musicians around and he has had a big influence on Andy. If you are in the North Carolina area then check them out.
As you know these old bluesman are living treasures. Unlike other styles of music where yesterdays artists are quickly thrown into the dustbin of one hits wonders and hasbeens. The blues celebrates it past and it living breathing history. We never throw aside our old artists but embrace them. So if near Durham NC, go check out the real blues of John Dee Holman.

As you know, Mr. Holeman has become a mentor and friend to me, and is one of the few “real deal” Piedmont blues musicians still living.
Here’s a brief summary of his accomplishments, from Sherry Johnson:
John Dee Holeman, a history lesson in blues, is a 1988 recipient of the National Endowment for the Arts National Heritage Fellowship, the highest honor that the U.S. bestows upon traditional artists (profile at www.nea.gov/honors/heritage/fellows/fellow.php?id=1988_06). In 1994, he was awarded the North Carolina Folk Heritage Award (see www.ncarts.org/artist_page.cfm?ser=35889&num=35389&). No artificial sweetener here -- this is the real stuff.
