• Dave Riley & Bob Corritore to play the Blues Music Awards! Just announced! The duo of Dave Riley & Bob Corritore will appear Thursday, May 8, 2008 at The 29th Blues Music Awards at the Grand Casino and Hotel in Tunica, Mississippi. Their CD, Travelin' The Dirt Road on Blue Witch Records, was nominated this year under the category of "Acoustic Album Of The Year". Dave and Bob were thrilled about the nomination in addition to the great response that the CD has received. Thanks to The Blues Foundation and it membership for recognizing this CD. • Delta Groove Showcase Update: The day after the BMAs, the party continues at Ground Zero in Clarksdale, Mississippi for the 3rd Annual Delta Groove Showcase. Appearing at this huge event are The Mannish Boys (Kid Ramos, Finis Tasby, Randy Chortkoff, Richard Innes, Franck Goldwasser, Bobby Jones, Tom Leavey, and Kirk Fletcher), The Insomniacs, The Jackie Payne/Steve Edmondson Band, the amazing Phillip Walker, plus Mikey Junior, John Black, Lionel Young, and a Blue Witch Records showcase set with Big Pete Pearson and The Rhythm Room All-Stars, Dave Riley & Bob Corritore, and Tomcat Courtney. • Little Walter's induction into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame on YouTube: Little Walter was considered the most brilliant and innovative blues harmonica player who ever lived. On Monday, March 10, 2008, Little Walter was inducted into The Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame with a televised ceremony live at the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel in New York. The film short that opened Little Walter's segment of the induction contains samples of his great harmonica work with some interviews, classic photos and rare footage. Of note are the brief segments filmed by Sam Lay that show Little Walter interacting with Howlin' Wolf at a club in the early 1960s. This is followed by pop artist Ben Harper with a live performance of "Juke” and "My Babe" by the great James Cotton, backed by Paul Shaffer's Band. It was good to see Walter recognized and interesting to see how Walter's specialized style is interpreted by the more pop-culture musical outlook of The Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame. Henry Townsend and The Last Of The Great Mississippi Delta Bluesmen

I met Henry Townsend backstage at the Belleville Illinois Folk Festival in earl 1975

I had the chance to pickup a a guitar there , and play a few licks,and I remember Henry listening and saying" I hear You!". I asked this very sophisticated looking Bluesman, If I could play guitars with him sometime,and he replied:"What are you doing tomorrow?" I went to see Henry the next day at his home on Kings Highway in St Louis ,and we became best of friends from then on. I moved to St louis in June of 75 and began the education of a lifetime

Henry had a recording studio in his basement and we'd spend late nights recording and jamming with some of the best musicians in St Louis .That's really where I learned about sound and how to play on a recording session. Henry used to tell me " Scotty, you're just like a cat. You learn a trick one day and can't remember it the next" .He was a hard teacher for the close group of us that he mentored . Thats how you knew he was invested in you -When he just wouldn't cut you any slack-.

Out of everything that I learned from Henry, it was not as much about the music but about how to carry your self , how to be aware of things around you, and to stand up for yourself and live with integrity. He was like our Zen master-constantly teaching and training and preparing us for our careers as musicians-

Henry and I made a lot of recordings together and when I started my studio in Virginia ,he would come out and record when he visited the east coast. In 1998 I was travelling with My own Blues band, and made a decision to drop that, and spend more of the time I had to play music with Henry. He was pushing 90 at the time , and I really wanted to be with him as much as possible in his late years We played in Atlanta , Memphis , Kansas city , Davenport at the Chicago Blues festivals and just all over the mid west.

We had worked up a couple of 3 part grooves playing guitars late at night in his kitchen in St Louis that he really wanted to record.,. He came into my Falls Chuch studio in early 1999 , to do that. Every Label he recorded with insisted that it be "Authentic" and cut live ,. but Henry wanted to overdub and multi track and add drums and things like a chorused guitars played through a rotating lesley speaker cabinet- ..He tried to branch out into more creative recordings and stretch his wings, and he really wanted to use anything that he could create a cool and different sound

On "The Last Of The Great Mississippi Delta Bluesmen" we performed a track called "It's Got to End Somewhere"that's the type of layered groove that he was trying to record in the late part of his carreer. Producers would always try to lock him into recreating what he did in 1931 and he was just itching to try something new and different. He was the most innovative musician that I ever worked with, and it's that side of his recording legacy that was fairly unknown

. We mixed the Grammy winning CD in early 2006 from the live recording that was made in Dallas I spoke with Henry at length about the record, and sent him test copies of the CD that he critiqued with his amazing ears .This is a guy that recorded in 9 decades ,and when he a had a comment about something , believe me, we all listened! At the age of 95 Henry's hearing was still extremely acute and he would catch little things that we would sometimes miss.He would say :"you know there's this little scratchy thing at the beginning of the third track that don't sound right", or "the last couple of songs sound a little thin -Can you warm that up a little bit.?"

Paul Grupp who's my good friend and recording Guru from LA set up the initial EQ' for the CD .We then put together the sound design to create a live feel for the Majestic theater in Dallas where the recording was made. Paul is probably the best engineer anywhere , particularly when it come to precise EQ ,and he really put his Mojo into this record.

The day we started mixing and selecting the tracks , we were in awe of the fact that the 4 artists on the CD were the "Board of directors " of the Blues .I remember that evening I called Henry in St Louis to tell him that we were going to get a Grammy for this record. -I knew it!

Henry's health was starting to fail and the more that we got into creating the CD,the more that I felt that this was a way to Honor him,and get him the recognition that he never quite received .It was partly my way of saying "thank you" to my best friend and mentor and to honor his legacy and punctuate his career.

In late 2006 I flew to st Louis to go out on a gig in Wisconsin with Henry.
When I arrived, he had just been released from the hospital suffering from on ongoing heart problem. The doctors had forbid him to travel and said that if he went on the road he would not survive

Well, they had said the exact same thing to Henry in 2005 when we flew to Texas to perform for the "The Last Of The Great Delta Bluesmen",, so he just didn't put too much stock in what the doctors had to say.

I remembered that we talked about the trip to Wisconsin at the time ,and I suggested that we just Hang out in St Louis and cancel the Gig. Henry replied that he" had to leave this earth sometime, and he would rather be on his way to a gig doing what he loved to do than laying around in the bed waiting to die." So we honored his wishes and hit the road on that October Friday morning.

We went to the festival grounds and checked out the stage setup the day before the performance was scheduled. Henry never got a chance to perform that last time in Grafton Wisconsin, where his recording carreer began in 1929.

I miss him everyday ,but know that his legacy was profound, and every time I pick up the guitar I can feel his presence. When we went to Los Angeles with our Grammy nomination in hand, I had a sense of purpose. We were there to hit the mark as a final victory for my friend Henry

Next Friday, Mar. 21, we've been invited to be part of the celebration of Iowa Public Radio's new frequencies in south central Iowa. One of the frequencies (89.1) will be carrying my weekend shows, so I'm looking forward to meeting new and long-time IPR listeners (Fairfield and Oskaloosa will now have a WAY better signal) The frequency will be launched in the morning of Mar. 21 with the celebration (family friendly) taking place at the new Bridge View Events Center in Ottumwa starting at 5:30p. The Blue Band plays 7-9pm. The event is free and open to the public. "Uncle " Al has promised to be part of the the horn section again that night...

We seem to continue to add a few dates to the summer schedule each week, but are still struggling to find work for April and May. Keep us in mind for that deck party at your mansion with the postcard view...

Surfing thru the TV channels after midnight, I saw the rerun of last week's Johnny Cash special that I got to co-host on IPTV. It's just plain weird seeing yourself on television, isn't it? You're so used to seeing the reverse image that you get from the mirror reflection, that seeing yourself, like others see you, is completely reverse of what YOU think you look like! And my hair is WAY greyer than I thought...

Don't ya just love it when sanctimonious people get exposed (!) for what they really are? Elliot Spitzer joins the list. I wonder what ya get for $4300...?!...

Candye Kane Update

The previous post from Bob Corritore, contained a story about Candye Kane and her pancreatic Cancer. The good news, if you can really call it that, is that her cancer is not the same aggressive type that Patrick Swayze has, and the prognoses is much better. Hang in there Candye!!! My Bout with Pancreatic Cancer!!

Hello all,

Some of you may have already heard this thru the grape vine or thru close friends or family members of mine so forgive me if you are receiving this information again.

On Friday, February 22, I went to the Scripps Encinitas emergency room with abdominal pain. I have been having this pain about every four to six months, for several years now, The pain has landed me in hospitals all over the world including Belgium, Germany, Holland, Nebraska, Indiana and New Jersey. (I actually had to cancel a tour in Germany some time ago, with BB and the Blues shacks because of this problem, and left the stage at Skips in Angola, Indiana because of same.) Usually they have diagnosed the pain as acid reflux, and I personally thought the pain was gallstones but no stones have ever been found. On this feb 22 ER trip, they finally gave me a cat scan and found a 3.4 cm tumor on my pancreatic head. The report they gave me said that the "mass is presumed to be cancer or a pancreatic neoplasm unless proven otherwise."

Since the finding of this tumor, I have done lots of research on the causes, symptoms and treatments for pancreatic tumors and cancers. There is a wonderful website www.pancan.org that provides some amazing information for people with this cancer, if you are interested. This cancer is normally caused by excessive cigarette or alcohol consumption or family history. I have none of the above but I have been exposed to very large amounts of second hand smoke in my lifetime. I have met with a pancreatic surgeon at UCSD Moores Cancer Institute and have had an endoscopic fine needle aspiration. This is a fancy word for biopsy. The biopsy results are still not analyzed yet, but they took five samples of the tumor with a very fine needle. I had to swallow a camera and the camera introduced the needle thru my stomach wall to take samples of the tumor on my pancreas. The doctor who did the procedure, and my pancreatic surgical nurse thinks I have a neuro endocrine tumor (which is the same one that Apple founder Steve Jobs had). The biopsy made me very sick and further inflamed my pancreas, and so I was admitted into the hospital this weekend for complications and fever resulting from the biopsy. Hospitals suck and I am really glad to be back home now and am feeling much better.

Like Steve Jobs, I have radically changed my diet as a result of this tumor. I have given up coffee, sodas. meat, fish, starch and sugar. I have purchased a juicer and am juicing daily with wheatgrass, beet, carrot, parsley, ginger, cucumber, chard and many fresh fruits. I am trying to alkaline my body since I have learned that cancer cannot grow in an alkaline environment. I am staying active and upbeat and have enlisted my friends and family to surround me with positive thoughts and white healing light. Now I ask you, my fans and friends to do the same.

I still don't know yet what the final results are of the biopsy but I should know something by the end of this week. I know that I am facing surgery, or chemotherapy, (although it is rarely successful in treating a neuroendocrine tumor) and maybe both. I am really strong and really healthy. In fact, I feel GREAT. Its weird when they tell you that you have cancer when you feel like a million bucks. Right now, I don't know which of my upcoming shows will have to be postponed but I will make that announcement soon. I am definitely coming up to the bay area this weekend – see the schedule below- and will probably not have to have my surgery until after at least part of my upcoming European tour. Of course, I will do whatever my doctors advise me to do so I can recover as quickly as possible.

The good news is that neuroendocrine tumors are not as aggressive or deadly as pancreatic cancer. They move slowly and are much easier to treat. The prognosis is much better for these types of islet cell tumors so that is wonderful. The bad news is I have a tumor and it will definitely affect me, my family; the band; the shows and my fans in some way, at some point.

Since I have no health insurance, its going to be a real struggle financially to survive without working. Some of you have already been very generous and kind and sent me money through paypal. My friends in Austin, Rosie Flores, Margaret Moser and Susan Antone are reportedly already organizing one, and my friends Dave Alvin and Toni Price and many other musicians and artists have kindly offered to lend their voices and guitars to my cause. I am also applying for aid from many music cares organizations and I am applying for Medi-cal. Hopefully, with the help of my friends, family and fans, and a few kindly music relief groups, I will be able to fight this tumor and get back to the job I love – making music for you!


I ask you for your love, your patience and most of all, your positive thoughts during this difficult time. If you have any extra money to give, now is the time to give it. If you live in the bay area, please come and celebrate my life and music with me and my band.

Thank you for keeping me and my sons, Evan and Tommy in your prayers. Most of all, thanks for the gracious and gentle gift of your friendship and love while I fight this current bump in the road.

• More Blues In The Movies: Since posting the first "Blues In The Movies" mention, we have received a number of emails by newsletter subscribers illuminating other places where blues on film exists. Robert Hagnas of the DP Agency contacted us about two films by Mukul Filmi Oy from Finland.

1) Mississippi-Nedervetil is a documentary showing a teacher student relationship with blues elder statesman Louisiana Red, and the young Finnish guitarist Niko Riipa of the Wentus Blues Band. For more information, click here.

2) Family Meeting documents a blues gathering in Finland to celebrate the twentieth anniversary of the Wentus Blues Band that includes special guests Eddie Kirkland, Lazy Lester, Louisiana Red, Kim Wilson, Mick Taylor, Tore Berglund, Eric Bibb, Clas Yngstrom, Omar Kent Dykes, Sven Zetterberg, and Barrence Whitfield. By documenting this blues reunion of musicians from the US, Sweden, UK, and Finland, this film illustrates the worldwide community the blues has become. To see the trailer, click here.

Busy Busy Busy

Just so you know I am still around, but boy am I busy! Yikes!! Taxes, end of the quarter at school, and I am still looking/thinking of relocating (thanks for all of you who have told me about your great cities:-)

I hope that once the quarter grades are done, I should have some more time. I do wish I had the time to go down to SXSW this weekend. But, there is no way I am going to be able to make the trip. I do know that former Iowan, and now New Yorker, Andy Schneider will be down there performing and hanging out. If you see this amazing one man band down at SXSW then tell him hi from me!! Also the one year anniversary of the blog is coming up in April!!!! So I had better start getting busy:-)
